Specitication forming part of' Letters Patent No. 3. |95. dated July 2G, 1843.

Vof Danville, in the county of Columbia and lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents the metallic core; Fig. 2, the mold with cores in` place; Fig. 8, casting; Fig. 4, wire with cores on it and metallic disks to close the ends.
The nature of my invention consists inthe manner of forming the metallic core and the combination of washers therewith for casting hinges, by which a :more perfect joint is made and greater expedition and neatness insured.
To construct my improved core, a solid cylinder of metal is turned smooth, and a hole drilled through its axis large enough to admit the proper-sized wire for the joint to be made of. Into one side of this core a notch is cut the thicknessiof the diameter of the center hole, so that the core can be placed on the wire without passing it on over the end, and when the casting is made can be displaced. At each end of this core metallic disks, made of thin sheet metal, as represented in Fig. 4, can be put, to prevent t-he metal of which the hinge is cast from entering the notch out in the core; or instead of these the notch can be filled with sand or other suitable substance l that can be removed when the casting is made. Another modication of this is to divide the core intwo parts,` so that it can be taken off; but this I deem less advantageous than that first described;
What I claim as my invention, and for which I desire to secure Letters Patent, is-
1. Constructing the core for casting butt hinges in the manner described, so that they can be removed from the pivot-Wire lof the hinge, substantially as herein set fort-h.
