To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GorTHoLD E. KALT- l MEYER, of San Buenaventura, county ofVentura, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Seed-Sowers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to that class of seedsowers in which a box provided with adjustable discharges and rotating agitators is adapted to be mounted upon and usedin connection with a revolving harrow, pulverizer, or plow; and my invention consists in novel details of construction and arrangement relating to the means for adjusting the capacity of the discharges, the agitators by which the discharge is facilitated, the means for rotating the agitators, the manner in which the seed-box is mounted, and the adjustable discharge-spouts by which the seed maybe deposited in front ofthe harrow, pulverizer, or plow, or behind it in the furrow, all of which I shall hereinafter fully explain.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, economical, and effective seed-sower.-
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my seedsower. Fig. 2 is a transverse section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the seed-box. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the agitator.
A is an axle of any suitable running-gear, though more especially intended as an axle of a rotary harrow, B, such as is here represented, or any rotary pulverizer or plow. The end of this axle is provided with a crank, a.
C is a bar or platform above the harrow, and having on its end a projecting pin, c.
D is the seed-box, the bottom of which is made of two thicknesses, spaced or separated, and having openings or slots d made through them. Between the thicknesses of the bottom and inclosed thereby is the slide gate or bar E, having throughout its length the openings or slots e, which, by reason of the sliding motion imparted to the gate-bar, are adapted to coincide wholly or in part with the openings d in the bottom of the seed-box. By means of this gate-bar the quantity of seed which is allowed to pass through the bottom of the seed-box is 5o regulated as may be desired. The sliding mo- -tion is imparted to the gate-bar by the following means:
Pivoted in a bracket, F, at the end of the box is a segmental gear, G, provided with a lever, g, which passes up through the slotted bar H. This bar is graduated to a suitable scale, whereby the motion of the lever may be accurately determined. The segmental gear meshes with the short rack e on the end of the gate-bar. rlhus by means of the gear and rack, the lever, and graduated bar, the movement ofthe gate-bar is determined, so that it is enabled to regulate the feed to a known or set quantity. The box D is supported above the platform by means of the brackets l, which hold it in a raised position, thereby enabling the spouts J to lie at asuitable inclination between the bottom of the box andthe platform. These spouts are adapted to receive the seed from the discharge-openings in the bottom of the box, and to carry it to one side of the platform, where it is discharged upon the ground. In some cases it may be desirable that this discharge shall be made in front of the barrow, while in others that it shall be made behind the harrow, into the furrow. In order to accomplish this the spouts are secured to the bottom ofthe box by means ofnuis and bolts. (Represented by K.) By removing the nuts the spouts can be readily slipped oi' 80 the bolts and reversed, being fitted upon bolts upon the opposite side of the box, whereby their direction of discharge is reversed.
Mounted longitudinally in the box is a shaft, L, uponwhich are mounted the agita- 85 tors M. These consist of disks having upon their periphery the radial flanges m,which are preferably of a T shape, whereby they are adapted the better to move over or cover the entire length of the openings in the bottom of 9o the box. The agitators are fitted upon the shaft by means of perforated hubs, which are set by screws a, whereby they may be adj usted laterally to cause them to operate over each of the discharge-openings of the feed-box with perfect accuracy. The end of shaft L is provided with a crank, l.
O is a rod or bar, the upper end of which is connected with the crank ,while the lower end is connected with the crank a of the running gear or harrow below. The center of this bar is slotted upon the pin c, extending from the end of the platform C. By means of this connection the agitators are given an entire IOO revolution, and the direction of this revolution is the reverse of the direction of revolution of the running-gear.
The operation of the device is as follows: The seed is placed in the box, which is suitably covered and the gate-bar is adjusted so as to regulate the capacity of the dischargeopenings as desired, and the spouts are set in a'proper position either to discharge :in front of or behind the harrow. As the machine is drawn forward, motion is transmitted from the axle A through the cranks 0, and Z and bar 0, to the agitators M ,whereby they are given a complete revolution, for the purpose of continuously and certainly forcing the grain or seed through the discharge-openings- The` seed drops upon the spouis, and by them is discharged upon the ground.
Having thus described my invention, what l' claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a seed-sewer, the box D, having bottom openings or slots, (Z, in combination-with the sliding gate-bar E, having openings or slits e, and mounted under the box, as described, and the mechanism b v which said the sliding gate-bar E, having openings or slits e, whereby the quantity ofthe discharge is regulated, the pivoted segmental lever-gear G and rack e', by which the gate-bar is operated, andthe graduated slotted barH, through whichthe lever of the segmental gear plays, and by which the amount of discharge is determined, substantially as herein described.
3. In a seed-sewer, the box D, having bottom openings or slots, el, in combination with the rotating agitators M, within the box, saidagitators having T-shaped radial flanges m, bolted through their periphery, substantially as and for the purposeherein described.
4. In a seed-sewer, the box D, mounted on suitable running-gear and having bottom openin gs or slots, CZ, in combination with the shaft L, extending longitudinally through the box, and
.having an end crank, Z, the agitators M,
mounted on the shaft and provided with T- shaped radial flanges, and the means by which a complete rotary motion in a direction the reverse of that of the running-gear is imparted to the agitators, consisting of the bar O, joining the crank ofthe agitatorshaft with a crank on the axle-shaft or wheel of the running-gear, and slotted on an intermediate xed pin attached to the bar C, substantially as herein described.
5. The shaft or axle A of a rotary harrow, plow, or pulverizer having an end crank, a, and the bar or platform C, carried by said shaft, in combination withthe seed-box D, having discharge-openings and mounted above and earried by the bar or platform, the agitators M, with T-shaped flanges, in the box, theshaft L, on which they are mounted, having an end crank, Z, the pin c, projecting from the bar or platform, and the bar O, joining the -cranks a Z and slotted on the pin c, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
6. In a seed-sewer, the box D, having bottom openings or slots, ri, in combination with the spouts J, under the box, adapted to receive and conduct the seed, said spcuts being secured to the box by bolts and nuts K, whereby they may be reversed and be attached to the opposite side of the box, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
7. The rotary harrow B andthe platform or bar C, carried by it, in combination with the seed-box I), 'having bottom openings, Vc Z, the brackets I, by which the box is secured upon and raised above the platform, the reversible spouts J, under the box, between it and the platform, lthe sliding slotted gate-bar E, by
which the discharge is regulated, and the rotating agitators M, within the box, Aall arranged to operate substantially as herein described.
