SNUBBED RAILWAY CAR TRUCK Original Filed Feb. 29. 1960 INVENTORS.
United States Patent 3,194,181 SNUBBED RAILWAY CAR TRUCK Carl E. Tack, Elrnhurst, 111., and Albert F. eel1g, In,
St. Louis, Mo., assignors to Amsted Industries Incorporated, Chicago, 11]., a corporation of New Jersey (Driginal application Feb. 29, 1960, Ser. No. 11,597, now Patent No. 3,079,873, dated Mar. 5, 1963. Divided and this application Aug. 3, 1962, Ser. No. 214,737
7 Qlaims. (Cl. 105-197) This invention relates to railway car trucks and more particularly to a truck embodying friction snubbing means for damping relative movements between the bolster and the side frames. This application is a division of our copending application Serial No. 11,597, filed February 29, 1960 now Patent No. 3,079,873, issued March 5, 1963.
Most of the modern railway freight car trucks are provided with snubbing means comprising a shoe urged into frictional engagement with either a bolster surface or a side frame surface by means of a helical compression spring. Due to the difference in the size, shape and contour of parts embodied in various snubb'ing arrangements, it will be appreciated that it has not heretofore been possible to interchange parts between trucks having different snubbing arrangements.
It is, therefore, an object of the invention to provide a snubbed railway car truck embodying parts adapted to be arranged in different ways to provide different snubbing arrangements.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a snubbed truck structure in which wedge wall inserts are detachably mounted on the side frame columns for engagement by friction shoes provided to frictionally engage opposite sides of a bolster.
The invention embodies other novel features, details of construction and arrangement of parts which are hereinafter set forth in the specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a fragmentary side elevation, partly in section, showing a snubbed railway car truck embodying features of the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a section taken along the line 22 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary side elevation, corresponding to FIGURE 1, illustrating a different snubbing arrangement;
FIGURE 4 is a section taken along the line 44 of FIGURE 3.
FIGURE 5 is a detail perspective view of the wedge wall insert shown in FIGURES 1, 2, 3 and 4. Referring now to the drawings for a better understanding of the invention, the snubbed railway car truck is shown as comprising spaced side frames 20, each having tension and compression members 22 and 24 interconnected by spaced columns 26 to define a bolster opening 28 to receive one end of a bolster 3t) resiliently supported on a spring group 32 seated on the tension member. Each side frame column comprises spaced side walls 34 interconnected by an end wall 36 to define a chamber 38 communicating with the bolster opening 28.
Referring now to FIGURES 1, 2 and 5 in the drawings, the snubbing arrangement is shown as comprising an insert 45) having spaced side walls 48 interconnected by a wedge wall 46, the insert being removably mounted within a column chamber 38 by any suitable means, such as weld connections St), to dispose the wedge wall and its surface 52 in a plane inclined downwardly toward the bolster opening 28. The bolster 34 is provided with a wear plate 56 having a vertical friction surface 54 for engagement by a friction shoe 42, the shoe having fric- 3,194,181 Patented July 13, 1955 tion faces 58 and 60 urged against the surfaces 52 and 54, respectively, by means of a helical compression spring 44 seated on the compression member 24 and engaged by a boss 62.
The snubbed railway car truck'illustrated in FIGURES 3 and 4 is similar to the truck structure illustrated in FIGURES l and 2 in that it embodies the same parts to provide a different snubbing arrangement. In this form of the invention the insert wedge wall 46 is inclined upwardly toward the bolster opening 28, and the friction shoe 42 is biased upwardly between the insert wedge wall and the side of the bolster by means of a compression spring 44 seated on the tension member 22 and engaged by a boss 64. It will be noted in this form of the invention that the side walls 48 of the insert are adapted to be maintained in abutting engagement against the column end wall 36 by the shoe 42 and compression spring 44 to facilitate replacement of worn snubbing parts.
We claim:
