BELTiNG OR DRBVlNG=BAND.
.SJEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.319,366, dated June 2, 1885.
Application filed February 19, 1985. (No model.) Patented in England August 24, 1883, No. 4,098.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WHITE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and lieland, and residing at Bingley, in the county of York, England, have invented certain Improvements in the Construction of Leather Ropes or Bands for Driving, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 4,098, dated August 24, A. D. 1883,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of improvements in the construction of that class of leather driving bands or ropes which are constructed of united layers, with or without canvas interspersed, more particularly bands of triangular section, my improvements being designed to obtain a belt having a maximum of strength with a minimum of material, as fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of a portion of my improved belt. Fig. 2 is a transverse section showing the application of the belt to the pulley, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the belt.
The sides of the grooves in the pulley are cut straight at an angle with the face of the "periphery and to a greater depth than the thickness of the belt, in order to give clearance at the bottom and obtain the necessary amount of friction.
The belts are built up in layers of leather,B, jointed together with spliced ends, and the various layers of leather interspersed with canvas, the whole being cemented and riveted together by rivets A in the center of the belt,
and by rivets 0, having a thread out upon them the entire length, which are screwed through several thicknesses of leather. The threads of the rivets embedding in the leather securely bind the layers B together, and when completed the sctional area of the belt is triangular.
By the belt being of triangular form and the flat, sides fitting the grooves in the pulleys, the frictional contact with the same is in creased by the belt wedging in the grooves, and by cutting away the apex of the triangle at D the wedging in the groove is somewhat regulated by the power that is being transmitted; also, by this portion being cut away, when running at a high speed the belt is not so liable to twist in the groove and thereby reduce the frictional contact, as is well known to be the case with square ropes running in triangular grooves with the two sides of the square rope filling the groove of the pulley.
I am aware of British Patent No. 1,266 of 1860, for belting, and do not claim anything therein known; but
I claim as my invention A belt of triangular section constructed in layers cemented together, and central rivets, A, and screwed rivets 0, to secure the layers, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
