(Cl. 222-182) The present invention relates to bulk shipping containers and particularly to such containers which include a dispensing valve.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a bulk shipping container having a dispensing valve which may be reclosed after a portion of the contents of the container are dispensed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bulk shipping container of the type described above which will hold finely powdered materials without leakage or dusting.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a bulk shipping container of the type described above having sufficient strength to carry a large quantity of bulk material without danger of rupture.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specifications when considered in light of the attached drawings in which:

Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures the reference numeral 10 indicates generally a bulk shipping container constructed in accordance with the invention.
The bulk shipping container 10 includes an outer shell 11, an inner liner 12, a valve assembly 13, a cover 14, and a bottom tray 15.
The outer shell 11 includes a generally rectangular front panel 16, a pair of generally rectangular side panels 17, 18, and a rear panel 19. The outer shell 11 is formed of one or more pieces of material folded to arrange the front panel 16 in parallel relation to the rear panel 19 and with the side panels 17, 13 similarly in parallel relation to each other. One edge of the front panel 16 and the adjacent edgeof the side panel 18 are joined together by any suitable means such as by taping 20.
A flap 21 is formed in the lower edge of the front panel 16 by cuts 22 at each side edge thereof and a score line 23 forming the top edge thereof as can be best seen in FIGURE 5.
The inner liner 12 includes a front panel 24, a pair of oppositely disposed side panels 25, 26 arranged in spaced apart parallel relation and a rear panel 27 secured to the side panels 25, 26 and arranged in spaced parallel relation tothe front panel 24. An inwardly folding flap 28 is formed on the upper edge of the front panel 24 and a sec- I 0nd inwardly folding flap 29 is integrally formed on the upper edge of the rear panel 27. A pair of inwardly folding flaps 30, 31 are respectively integrally formed on the upper edges of the side panels 25, 26 and are arranged to overlie the flaps 28, 29 and therewith form a filling opening 32 centrally thereof. A rectangular opening 33 is formed in the lower edge of the front panel 24 as can be clearly seen in FIGURE 6.
Referring now to FIGURE 4 the cover 14 includes a generally rectangular top panel 34 having a plurality of depending side walls 35, 36 integrally secured to the respective side edges thereof. The side walls 35, 36 have overlaping folded corners 37 secured in any suitable way such as by staples 38. A generally rectangular filling door 39 is formed in the top panel 34 by a generally U shaped cut 41). A score line 41 joins the filling door 39 to the top panel 34 and forms a hinge around which the filling door 39 opens and closes.
The bottom tray 15 has a generally rectangular bottom panel 42 having a plurality of upstanding side and end walls 43, 44 integrally secured thereto and extending perpendicularly upwardly therefrom. The side walls 43, 44 are provided with folded overlapping corners 45 secured together by suitable means such as staples 46. One end wall 44 has a flap 47 formed therein by means of a pair of oppositely disposed parallel cuts 48 extending approximately one-third the distance between the free edge of the end Wall 44 and its connection to the'bottorn panel 42. The score line 49 extends in aligned relation from each of the cuts 48 down to the bottom panel 42.
The valve assembly 13 is formed from a single sheet of rectangular form as can be seen in FIGURE 9. A generally rectangular front panel 59 is delineated by parallel cuts 51, 52 extending from the top edge of the valve assembly 3.3 to a point spaced from the bottom edge thereof. A score line 53 extends parallel to the top and bottom edges of the valve assembly 13 and delineates the lower edge of the panel 50. The cuts 51, 52 form opposite side panels 54, 55. A generally rectangular valve panel 56 is joined to the front panel 50 along the score line 53. Score lines 57, 58 are arranged as continuations of the cuts 51, 52 and delineate the opposite side edges of the valve panel 56. A diagonal score line 59, 61) extends respectively from the cuts 51, 52 outwardly to the opposite corners of the valve assembly 13 at a 45 angle to the bottom edge of the valve assembly 13. Score lines 61, 62 are arranged in alignment with and at opposite ends of the score line 53 as continuations thereof. The lower edges of the side panels 54, 55 are delineated by score lines 63, 64 respectively which are arranged parallel and closely adjacent to the score lines 61, 62. The valve assembly 13 as illustrated in FIGURE 9 is folded along the score lines 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64 to assume the folded shape as illustrated in FIGURE 7. The valve panel 56 can be hinged outwardly and upwardly with the score line 53 forming the center of the hinge action. As the valve panel 56 is hinged outwardly and upwardly the unfolding of the valve assembly 13 along the score lines 57, 58, 59, 61), 61, 62 provides a pair of side panels 65, 66 depending from the valve panel 56 as is best illustrated in FIGURES l and 3.
The bulk shipping container 10 is assembled on a pallet 67 having a floor 68 and transverse supports 69, '71 arranged thereunder. In assembling the bulk shipping container 10 the bottom tray 15 is first placed on the pallet 67 and the inner liner 12 is positioned therein. The valve assembly 13 is folded into the position shown in FIGURE 7 and inserted between the side walls 43, 44 of the tray 15 and the inner liner 12. The outer shell 11 is then positioned in encompassing relation to the side and end walls 43, 44 of the tray 15 with the bottom edges of the outer shell 11 supported on the pallet 67. The cover 14 is mounted on top of the bulk shipping container 10 with its side walls 35, 36 encompassing the upper edges of the outer shell 11. Having thus described the preferred embodiment of'the invention it should be understood thatnumerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without d-eparting from the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A bulk shipping container comprising a generally rectangular inner'liner having a valve opening formed in the lower edge of one side thereof, a generally rectangular out-er shell encompassing said inner liner, a flap hingedly s'ecuredto the lower edge of one side of said. outer shell and arranged in generally aligned relation to said valve opening, a bottom rtray having upstanding side,

7. A container as set forth in claim 1 wherein said liner, said sleeve, said valve assembly, said tray and said cover are each formed of corrugated cardboard.

A BULK SHIPPING CONTAINER COMPRISING A GENERALLY RECTANGULAR INNER LINER HAVING A VALVE OPENING FORMED IN THE LOWER EDGE OF ONE SIDE THEREOF, A GENERALLY RECTANGULR OUTER SHELL ENCOMPASSING SAID INNER LINER, A FLAP HINGEDLY SECURED TO THE LOWER EDGE OF ONE SIDE OF SAID OUTER SHEEL AND ARRANGED IN GENERALLY ALIGNED RELATION TO SAID VALVE OPENING, BOTTOM TRAY HAVING UPSTANDING SIDE AND END WALLS, SAID SIDE AND END WALLS LYING BETWEEN SAID OUTER SHEEL AND SAID INNER LINER, A VALVE ASSEMBLY MOUNTED BETWEEN SAID SIDE AND END WALLS AND SAID INNER LINER, SAID VALVE ASSEMBLY INCLUDING A PAIR OF OPPOSITELY DISPOSED SPACED APART SIDE PANELS, A FRONT PANEL, A VALVE PANEL HINGEDLY SECURED TO THE LOWER EDGE OF SAID FRONT PANEL ALIGNED WITH AND CLOSING SAID VALVE OPENING WHEN IN CLOSED POSITION, EXPANSIBLE MEANS INTEGRALLY SECURING THE RESPECTIVE SIDE EDGES OF SAID VALVE PANEL TO SAID SIDE PANELS, SAID VALVE PANEL BEING MOVEABLE OUTWARDLY AND UPWARDLY TO AN OPEN POSITION PERMITTING FLOW OF CONTENTS FROM SAID INNER LINER OUT OF SAID CONTAINER, AND A COVER HAVING DEPENDING SIDE WALLS ENCOMPASSING THE UPPER END OF SAID OUTER SHELL.
