(Cl. 29-118) 'I'his invention relates to a roll device, and more particularly to a roll for removably mounting a lioor treating sheet or the like.
A primary object of this invention is to provide a new and improved roll device.
Another object is to provide a new and improved roll device for releasably clamping a sheet or the'like operatively positioned on the roll;
A further object is provision of a new and improved roll device havingY an articulated roll shell with jaw portions operable for clamping a sheet or the like on the roll.
An important object is'provision of a new and improved roll device having a roll shell with relatively movable sections andV operable for holding a sheet or the like wrapped around the roll.
A more specific object is provision of a new and improved roll device particularly suited for use on bowling alleys or the like, and receiving a door treating sheet or the like wrapped around a roll shell defined by a pair of opposed roll halves, each half having at least one bracket fixed interiorally thereof and an edge on each half cooperating with a similar opposed edge on the other half, and defining a pair of cooperating jaws for clamping portions of the sheet therebetween and holding the sheet on the roll, the bracketsabeing connected for movement of said jaws toward and away from each other, and cam means on the roll for operating the brackets and the jaws. A related object is provision of opposed portions of the roll shell which move apart as the clamping jaws move to clamping position, for holding the sheet tight.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become readily apparent from vthe following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

While an illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings and will be described in detail herein, the invention is susceptible of embodiment in many different forms, and it should be understood that the present disclosure is to be considered as an exemplitication of the principles of the invention and is not intended to limit the invention to the embodiment illustrated. The scope of the invention will be pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is, in brief, directed to a roll device, and a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the drawings in the form of a roll device particularly suited for treating bowling alleys or the like. The roll device includes a roll shell about which a oor treating sheet or the like may be wrapped and releasably held thereon by jaws on relatively movable sections'of the roll shell. In the illustrated embodiment these roll sections are pivoted to each other, and means is provided for operating the roll sections and moving the jaws between open and closed clamping positions. As the jaws on the roll sections move to clamping position, other portions of the shell move apart to hold the sheet tight on the shell.
Referring to the drawings, a roll device includes a roll shell 10, which in the illustrated embodiment is generally cylindrical about a longitudinal axis 11. Roll shell 1@ has an outer peripheral surface 12 which receives surfacing means comprising a sheet 13 or pad in the form of a felt like cloth or the like, in facial engagement with roll shell periphery 12, and an outer sheet 14 (shown dotted for clearer illustration) of suitable material as determined by the intended function of the roll, and herein outer sheet 1d is illustrated in the form of a suitable polishing cloth. In the illustrated embodiment, both sheets extend effectively entirely about roll shell periphery 12. Opposite end portions 15 of outer sheet 14 are held between opposed jaws 16 and 17 toi retain this sheet operatively positioned about the roll shell.
In the illustrated embodiment, roll shell 10 is articulated, and jaws 16 and 17 are defined by a pair of opposed edge portions of the roll. These jaws are movable between a closed, operative sheet clamping position ias shownV in FIGURES l-3 and 5, and an open spaced apart position as shown in FIGURE 4. Such movement of these jaws is responsive to movement of roll shell 10, andin the illustrated embodiment roll shell 10 is defined by sections, and more particularly by opposed roll halves 2t) and 21. Roll. halves 2li and 21 have second edge portions 22 and 23, respectively, defining a pair of second opposed edge portions which, in the illustrated embodiments are diametrically opposite to jaws 16 and 17. Both the jaws and the second pair of edge portions preferably extend generally longitudinally the entire length of roll shell 10.
Actuating rst means is provided for movement of jaws 16 and 17 toward `and away-from each other between closed and open positions, respectively, and for opposite movement of the second pair of opposed edge portions 22 and 23 toward and away from each other, so that as the' jaws move toward closed position the pair of edges 22. and 23 move away from each other and thereby tend to hold sheet 1d tight on the roll shell, and upon movement of the jaws to open position the second pair of edges move toward each other. In the illustrated embodiment this means Ais provided by a series of interior transverse brackets 26 and 27 fixed, respectively, to roll sections 2t) and 21 in any suitable manner as by a flange on the bracket rigidly connected with its roll section as by rivets 2S. Reinforcement members 26a and 27a may alsobe provided if desired.v A lirst shaft 29 is received within the roll and in the illustrated embodiment extends generally longitudinally thereof near the second pairof roll edges 22 and 23. This shaft is iixedly mounted at its opposite ends to supporting members 3@ at either end of roll 10, in any suitable manner as by reduced end portions 31 of this shaft extending through openings in'respective support members 30 with nuts 32 securing the shaft to the support member. Shaft 29 extends through journals 33 in each of the brackets 26 and 2T so that these brackets are pivotally'mounted on the shaft.
Cam second means is provided for moving the roll sections and thereby opening and closing jaws 16 and 17 and moving roll second edge portions 22 and 23 toward and away from each other, as previously described.
,Herein this means is in the form of a cam shaft 35 extending generally longitudinally through roll 10 near jaws 16 and 17. Opposite ends of cam shaft 35 are received in journals 36 in supporting members 36 for rotation ofthe cam. shaft. As may best be seen in FIG. 6, cam means,
v Patented July 6, 1965 here in the form of pairs of diametrically opposed cams 40 and 41 are mounted on the cam shaft for rotation therewith. Cams 40 are operatively associated with brackets 26 and cams 41 are operatively associated with brackets 27, and more particularly with opposed cam surfaces 42 and 43 defining the periphery of an opening in these brackets receiving the cams and cam shaft. The cams may be of any suitable shape, and as mentioned pre viously are diametrically opposed, such that the brackets are moved outwardly for moving the roll sections outwardly land opening jaws 16 and 17, and moving the second pair of roller edges 22 and 23 toward each other when the cam shaft 35 is moved in 'one direction by a handle 45 pivoted to one end of the cam shaft. Upon rotation of the cam shaft in opposite direction the jaws are closed and edge portions 22 and 22 moved away from each other to clamp closed edge portions 16 and 17 of sheet 14 between the jaws and to hold the sheet tensioned by movement of edge portions 22 and 23 away from each other. In the illustrated embodiment cam shaft 35 is rotated about 180 degrees in operating the jaws between their open and closed positions. When the cams are in the position shown in FIG. 3 and FIG. 6, rotation of shaft 35 moves cam 40 out of engagement with surface 43 on bracket 26 and cam 41 outV of engagement with surface 42 on bracket 27. Continued rotation of shaft 35 moves cam 40 into engagement with surface 42 on bracket 26 and cam 41 into engagement with surface 43 on bracket 27 to pivot brackets 26 and 27 about shaft 29, and move jaws 16 and 17 away from one another and edges 22 and 23 toward each other. When shaft 35 has been rotated 180, as is seen in FIG. 4, cams 40 and 41 retain jaws 16 and 17 in spaced relation with edges 22 and 23 being positioned relatively closely to one another. This enables the ends of sheet 13 to be inserted between the jaws without difficulty. When shaft 35 is again rotated 180 into the position shown in FIG. 3, cams 40 and 41 will engage surfaces 43 and 42 on brackets 26 and 27, respectively, to close jaws 16 and 17 into tight clamping engagement with the ends of sheet 13, and spread edges 22 and 23 apart to tension the sheet 13. From the foregoing, it will be apparent that shaft 35, together with the plurality of pairs of cams 40 and 41, comprises a single means which is operative in a first mode to move the roll sections out of a cylindrical configuration, and in a second mode to move the roll sections into a cylindrical configuration.
Means is provided on at leastV one of the supporting members for mounting the roll device on a support for rotation about its longitudinal axis 11, and for rotating the roll. Herein this means is in the form of journals 48 for receiving a mounting shaft (not shown), about which the roll rotates, and lugs 49 extending outwardly from the body of each supporting member for engaging suitable driving members (not shown), the mounting shaft and driving members being part of a suitable support. It should be particularly noted that the support for the roll device forms no part of this invention and journals 48 and lugs 49 may be modified, replaced by other suitable means, or eliminated if not required.
It should also be noted that sheet 13 may be adhesively secured to roll periphery 12, or may be detachably oarried thereby in any suitable manner, or if found desirable it may be eliminated entirely.
I claim:
1. A roll device for receiving a bufiing sheet or the like secured therearound, comprising, a pair of relatively movable hollow opposed roll sections for supporting the sheet, each section having a plurality of interior transverse brackets fixed at longitudinally spaced positions therein and opposing corresponding brackets in the opposed section, generally diametrically opposite edges on each section with corresponding edges on the opposed section defining pairs of opposed edges, first means pivotally connecting opposed brackets proximate one of said pair of edges and comprising a shaft extending longitudinally through the roll adjacent said one pair of edges and pivotally connecting said brackets for opposite movementl of opposed edges in said pairs toward and away from each other, movement of said one pair of edges away from each other being effective for tensioning said sheet ou said roll, the other of said pair of edges defining jaws for holding opposite edge portions of `said sheet therebetween when said jaws are closed upon movement of said `other pair of edges toward each other, said jaws releasing said sheet edge portions when said jaws are open upon movement of said other edges away from each other, cam means including a cam shaft pivotally mounted in the roll proximate said jaws, an opposed pair of cam engageable surfaces on each bracket and disposed on opposite sides `of said cam shaft, respectively, and a pair of diametrically opposed cams fixed on said cam shaft adjacent each pair of opposed brackets, and cooperating respectively with the brackets, each cam cooperable with both cam surfaces on the associated bracket, each cam being engageable alternatively with the respective cam surfaces for opening and closing the jaws responsive to rotation of the cam shaft about degrees, and means for rotating the cam shaft about 180 degrees.
2. A roll device for receiving a floor treating member or the like secured therearound, comprising, a pair of opposed relatively movable roll sections for supporting the member, each section having a transverse bracket fixed therein, opposite edges on each section and corresponding edges on the opposed section defining pairs of opposed edges, rst means pivotally connecting said brackets proximate one of said pair of edges and comprising a shaft extending through the roll adjacent said one pair of edges, said first means pivotally connecting said brackets for movement of said pairs of opposed edges toward and away from each other, second means including a cam shaft mounted in the roll proximate the other pair of edges, cam surface means on each bracket, and cam means on said cam shaft cooperating with said cam surface means for so moving said pairs of edges responsive to operation of the cam shaft.
3. The roll device of claim 2, and at least one supporting member connected with said roll, and means on said supporting member for mounting said roll device on a support for rotation of the roll.
4. The roll of claim 3 wherein at least one of said shafts is mounted on said supporting member for connecting said supporting member and roll. e
5. The roll device of claim 2, said roll having opposite ends and a longitudinal axis, said edges extending generally longitudinally of said roll, supporting members, one at each of said ends, said shafts having opposite ends mounted on said supporting members, means on said supporting members for mounting said roll device on a support for rotation of the roll about its longitudinal axis and for rotating said roll.
6. The roll device of claim 5 wherein the last said means comprises journals and lugs on said supporting members.
7. The roll of claim 2 wherein a handle is mounted on the end of said cam shaft for manually rotating said cam shaft.
8. A roll device movable into and out of a substantially cylindrical configuration comprising, a pair of relatively movable hollow opposed roll sections, collectively defining a generally cylindrical roll having a central longitudinal axis, each section having a plurality of internal transverse brackets fixed at longitudinally spaced positions therein and opposing corresponding brackets in the opposed section to form spaced apart pairs of brackets, a first shaft extending longitudinally through said roll and positioned on one side of and parallel with the longitudinal axis of said roll, said shaft pivotally connecting said brackets for movement of said sections relative to one another, a second shaft extending longitudinally through said aleasos roll, said second shaft being parallel with said roll axis and disposed on an opposite side of said axis from said lirst shaft, each of said brackets having a pair of opposed cam engagable surfaces disposed on opposite sides of said second shaft, and a pair or diametrically opposed cams ixed on said second shaft adjacent each pair of opposed brackets, each cern being engageable alternately with said opposed cani surfaces to pivot said brackets around said rst shaft and move said sections into and out of said substanially cylindrical configuration.
9. A roll device movable into and out of a substantially cylindrical configuration comprising, a pair of relatively movable hollow opposed roll sections, collectively defining a generally cylindrical roll having a central longitudinal axis, each section having a plurality of internal transverse brackets fixed at longitudinally spaced positions therein and opposing corresponding brackets in the opposed section to forrn spaced apart pairs of brackets, a first shalt extending longitudinally through said roll and pivotaily connecting said brackets for movement of said sections relative to one another, a second shaft extending longitudinally through said roll, each of said brackets having a pair of opposed cam engageable surfaces disposed on opposite sides of said second shaft, and a pair of diametrically opposed cams fixed on said second shaft adjacent each pair of opposed brackets, each cam being engageable alternately with said opposed cam surfaces to pivot said brackets around said first shaft and move said sections into and out of said substantially cylindrical configuration.

Claims (1)
1. A ROLL DEVICE FOR RECEIVING A BUFFING SHEET OR THE LIKE SECURED THEREAROUND, COMPRISING, A PAIR OF RELATIVELY MOVABLE HOLLOW OPPOSED ROLL SECTIONS FOR SUPPORTING THE SHEET, EACH SECTION HAVING A PLURALITY OF INTERIOR TRANSVERSE BRACKETS FIXED AT LONGITUDINALLY SPACED POSITIONS THEREIN AND OPPOSING CORRESPONDING BRACKETS IN THE OPPOSED SECTION, GENERALLY DIMETRICALLY OPPOSITE EDGES ON EACH SECTION WITH CORRESPONDING EDGES IN THE OPPOSED SECDEFINING PAIRS OF OPPOSED EDGES, FIRST MEANS PIVOTALLY CONNECTING OPPOSED BRACKETS PROXIMATE ONE OF SAID PAIR OF EDGES AND COMPRISING A SHAFT EXTENDING LONGITUDINALLY THROUGH THE ROLL ADJACENT SAID ONE PAIR OF EDGES AND PIVOTALLY CONNECTING SAID BRACKETS FOR OPPOSITE MOVEMENT OF OPPOSED EDGES IN SAID PAIRS TOWARD AND AWAY FROM EACH OTHER, MOVEMENT OF SAID ONE PAIR OF EDGES AWAY FROM EACH OTHER BEING EFFECTIVE FOR TENSIONING SAID SHEET ON SAID ROLL, THE OTHER OF SAID PAIR OF EDGES DEFINING JAWS FOR HOLDING OPPOSITE EDGE PORTIONS OF SAID SHEET THEREBETWEEN WHEN SAID JAWS ARE CLOSED UPON MOVEMENT OF SAID OTHER PAIR OF EDGES TOWARD EACH OTHER, SAID JAWS RELEASING SAID SHEET EDGE PORTIONS WHEN SAID JAWS ARE OPEN UPON MOVEMENT OF SAID OTHER EDGES AWAY FROM EACH OTHER, CAM MEANS INCLUDING A CAM SHAFT PIVOTALLY MOUNTED IN THE ROLL PROXIMATE SAID JAWS, AN OPPOSED PAIR OF CAM ENGAGEABLE SURFACES ON EACH BRACKET AND DISPOSED ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF SAID CAM SHAFT, RESPECTIVELY, AND A PAIR OF DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSED CAMS FIXED ON SAID CAM SHAFT ADJACENT EACH PAIR OF OPPOSED BRACKETS, AND COOPERATING RESPECTIVELY WITH THE BRACKETS, EACH CAM COOPERABLE WITH BOTH CAM SURFACES ON THE ASSOCIATED BRACKET, EACH CAM BEING ENGAGEABLE ALTERNATIVELY WITH THE RESPECTIVE CAM SURFACES FOR OPENING AND CLOSING THE JAWS RESPONSIVE TO ROTATION OF THE CAM SHAFT ABOUT 180 DEGREES, AND MEANS FOR ROTATING THE CAM SHAFT ABOUT 180 DEGREES.
