(Cl. 42-16) The present invention relates to riile bolts generally and in particular to a straight pull bolt action rifle bolt.
An object of the present invention is to provide a rifle bolt in which there `is means for securely locking the bolt in the receiver when the riile is in condition for firing, this means being of sturdy design and construction and able to withstand the shock and high back pressure of heavily loaded cartridges.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a riile bolt in which there is a single reciprocating movement of the bolt without rotation thereof.
A further object of the present invention is -to provide a rifle bolt which has a minimum number of parts, one which is readily assembled and disassembled, one which is sturdy in construction, and one which is economically feasible.l
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which:

Referring in greater detail to the drawings in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the reference numeral 20 designates a rifle generally having a barrel 22 and a stock portion 24, the barrel 22 and the stock portion 24 being only partially shown in FIGURES 1 to 3, inclusive.
The bolt action of the present invention is designated generally by the reference numeral 26 and it includes a receiver 28, a bolt sleeve 30, a bolt 32, and an operating handle 34.
The barrel 22 is provided with a bore 36 and the receiver 28 is provided with a bore 38 in registry with the bore 36. The bore 38 is out of round and is in fact oval shaped. There is an enlarged portion 40 at one end of the bore 38 in the receiver 28. The bore portion 40 is shaped differently than the bore 38 and is substantially circular. The bore 40 of the receiver has abutment element 37 where it meets bore 38 as shown in FIGURES l and 8.
The bolt 32 includes a shank 42 and a head 44 on one end of the shank 42. The cylindrical bolt shank 42 fits snugly and conformable Within the sleeve 30. The shank 42 is provided with a slot 46 having both ends closed..
As shown most clearly in FIGURE 14, the slot 46l has a straight portion 48 adjacent the head 44 and a curved portion 50 remote from the head 44. A pin 52 traverses the slot 46 and is slidable therein responsive to movement of the sleeve 30. The traversing pin 52 has its end portions anchored in the sleeve 30.
The end of the sleeve 31) adjacent the bolt head 44 has two fingers 54 projecting therefrom which embrace the sides of the head 44 when the latter is locked into .the bore portion 40 4by means of the pin 52 when `at the end of the curved portion Si) of slot 46 and the sleeve is all the way forward. The lingers then serve as a lock in holding the bolt head turned into place against the abutments 37. If the bolt head is not completely turned and secured by the abutments, the sleeve ngers and sleeve will not advance suiciently to allow tiring of the piece.
As shown in FIGURE 15, the bolt head 44 has a rim 56 and a lip 58 within the rim 56. The bolt head 44 also has a bore 60 in which is seated a coil spring 62 biasing a pin 64 outwardly, as shown in FIGURE 14. The lip 58 is adapted to engage the rim of a cartridge when in the barrel 22 and the pin 64 ejects the cartridge ont of the receiver 28 when the bolt is pulled to the rearward position.
The ends of the pin 52 are anchored in holes 66 provided in the sleeve 30 as shown in FIGURE 10. The handle 34 is positioned in other holes 66 provided in the sleeve 30 and may be shifted for right hand or left hand use by removing from the sleeve 30 and reversing the same.
In FIGURES 16 and 17 the reference numeral 70 designates generally the liring pin of the present invention and is seen to consist in a reduced section 72 and an enlarged section 74. The enlarged section 74 is provided with a pair of collars 76 and 78 and the collar 76 bears against the handle 34, there being provided a bore 80 in the handle 34 for passage therethrough of the section 74 of the firing pin 70.
The other collar 78 is closed at the end and covers the firing pin section 74 when the pin is in the bolt 32, as in FIGURE 9. A coil spring 82 is interposed between the collar 78 and the handle 34 and biases the tiring pin 70 to the rearward position relative to the bolt 32. The free end of the reduced tiring pin section 72 is what strikes the base of the cartridge upon actuation of the trigger mechanism, the latter not being shown.
Pins 84 and 86 secure the collars 76 and 78 to the firing pin section 74, respectively.
As shown in FIGURES l2 and 13, the receiver 28 is provided at the end adjacent the barrel 22 with a pair of shoulders 88 and 90 which receive, respectively, the rim of a cartridge (not shown) andthe forward or battery face of the head 44 of the bolt 32, when the bolt is in the forward position and the cartridge is in the rie barrel.
In action, as shown in FIGURES 1, and 7 to 9, inclusive, when the bolt 32 is in the forward position the pin 52 is in the forward end of the slot 46. Upon initiation of a pulling movement to the handle 34, the sleeve moves rearwardly pulling the pin 52 through the straight portion 48 of the slot 46 and then into the curved portion of the slot 46. As it moves into the curved portion it rotates the head 44 disengaging the sides of the head from the abutment formed by the junction of the enlarged portion 40 of the bore 38. Upon rotating a quarter of a turn the head 44 frees itself and is drawn rearwardly out of the forward end portion of the bore 33 so as to permit extraction of the shell and the ejection thereof out of the opening 92 in the receiver 28.
It is to be understood that the bolt action of the present invention is to be employed in combination with any iring mechanism found practical and the usual magazine may be attached to the receiver in the conventional Way. While only a preferred embodiment of the present invention is shown and described, other embodiments are contemplated and numerous changes and modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
What is claimed is:
1. In a rille including a barrel provided with a bore, a receiver having an oval bore extending therethrough disposed adjacent one end of said barrel with the bore thereof in alignment with the bore of said barrel, a bolt sleeve conformably shaped to lit within said receiver bore slidably mounted in said receiver bore, a bolt slidably mounted in a portion of said sleeve adjacent one end thereof, said bolt having a head on one end and a cylindrical shank conformably shaped to t the interior of said sleeve, there being a closed ended slot in said shank, said slot having a straight portion adjacent said head and a curved portion remote from said head, said head being conformably shaped to t said receiver bore, a pin traversing said slot and anchored in said sleeve, said bolt upon sliding movement of said sleeve in one direction executing a quarter of a turn, said receiver bore having a portion adjacent one end provided with opposed abutments engageable with said head upon execution of said quarter turn, and a firing pin extending slidably through said bolt shank from one end to the other and through said bolt head, and through said traversing pin.
2. In a ritle including a barrel provided with a bore, a receiver having an oval bore extending therethrough disposed adjacent one end of said barrel with the bore thereof in alignment with the bore of said barrel, a bolt sleeve conformably shaped to fit within said receiver bore slidably mounted in said receiver bore, a bolt slidably Cil mounted in a portion of said sleeve adjacent one end thereof, said bolt having a head on one end and a cylindrical shank conformably shaped to t the interior of said sleeve, there being a closed ended slot in said shank, said slot having a straight portion adjacent said head and a curved portion remote from said head, said head being conformably shaped to fit said receiver bore, a pin traversing said slot and anchored in said sleeve, said bolt upon sliding movement of said sleeve in one direction executing a quarter of a turn, said receiver bore having a portion adjacent one end provided with opposed abutments engageable with said head upon execution of said quarter turn, a ring pin extending slidably through said bolt shank from one end to the other and through said bolt head and through said traversing pin, and a lip on said head adapted to engage the rim of a cartridge when in said barrel bore.
3. In a rifle including a barrel provided with a bore, a receiver having an out of round bore extending therethrough disposed adjacent one end of said barrel with the bore thereof in alignment with the bore of said barrel, a bolt sleeve conformably shaped to fit within said receiver bore slidably mounted in said receiver bore, a bolt slidably mounted in a portion of said sleeve adjacent one end thereof, said bolt having a head on one end and a cylindrical shank conformably shaped to fit the interior of said sleeve, there being a closed ended slot in said shank, said slot having a straight portion adjacent said head and a curved portion rernote from said head, said head being conformably shaped to t said receiver bore, two flat fingers mounted in juxtaposition and integral with and extending forwardly frorn the forward end of said bolt sleeve sliding within the receiver bore and holding the bolt head between them when said bolt head is in battery position, a pin traversing said slot and anchored in said sleeve, said bolt upon sliding movement of said sleeve in one direction executing a quarter of a turn, said receiver bore having a portion adjacent one end provided with opposed abutments engageable with said head upon execution of said quarter turn, and a firing pin extending slidably through said bolt shank from one end to the other end through said bolt head.

1. IN A RIFLE INCLUDING A BARREL PROVIDED WITH A BORE, A RECEIVER HAVING AN OVER BORE EXTENDING THERETHROUGH DISPOSED ADJACENT ONE END OF SAID BARREL WITH THE BORE THEREOF IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE BORE OF SAID BARREL, A BOLT SLEEVE CONFORMABLY SHAPED TO FIT WITHIN SAID RECEIVER BORE SLIDABLY MOUNTED IN SAID RECEIVER BORE, A BOLT SLIDABLY MOUNTED IN A PORTION OF SAID SLEEVE ADJACENT ONE END THEREOF, SAID BOLT HAVING A HEAD ON ONE END AND A CYLINDRICAL SHANK CONFORMABLY SHAPED TO FIT THE INTERIOR OF SAID SLEEVE, THERE BEING A CLOSED ENDED SLOT IN SAID SHANK, SAID SLOT HAVING A STRAIGHT PORTION ADJACENT SAID HEAD AND A CURVED PORTION REMOTE FROM SAID HEAD, SAID HEAD BEING CONFORMABLY SHAPED TO FIT SAID RECEIVER BORE, A PIN TRAVERSING SAID SLOT AND ANCHORED IN SAID SLEEVE, SAID BOLT UPON SLIDING MOVEMENT OF SAID SLEEVE IN ONE DIRECTION EXECUTING A QUARTER OF A TURN, SAID RECEIVER BORE HAVING A PORTION ADJACENT ONE END PROVIDED WITH OPPOSED ABUTMENTS ENGAGEABLE WITH SAID HEAD UPON EXECUTION OF SAID QUARTER TURN, AND A FIRING PIN EXTENDING SLIDABLY THROUGH SAID BOLT SHANK FROM ONE END TO THE OTHER AND THROUGH SAID BOLT HEAD, AND THROUGH SAID TRAVERSING PIN.
