SlGHT FOR FIREMARMS.
eEEoIrIcATIoN forming part of Letters Parent No. 318,999, dared June 2,1855.
Application led March 23, 1885.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MAYNARD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, ofthe Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sights for Fire-Arms; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of whichl vFigure lis a top View, Fig. 2 a front elevation, Fig. 3 a rear end View, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal section, of a foresight with its tube-sight and eye -pieee in accordance with niy invention, such figures showing the parts on an enlarged scale, or double that on which they are generallyonstructed. Fig. 5 is a side view of the eye-piece as separated from the tube-sight. Fig. 6 is a side` view, and Fig. 7 is a rear end view, of the foresight. 2o Fig. Sis a side view, Fig. 9 a top view, Fig. l0 an under side View, and Fig. 1l a rear end View, of the tube-sight. Fig. l2 is a trans- Verse section of the foresight and tube-sight, such section being taken through their connecting-screw.
The nature of my invention is defined in the claims hereinafter presented.
In such drawings, the foresight of va rifle is shown at A as consisting of a flat base, c, o dovetailed in transverse section, a tenon, b,
extending upward from such base at its iniddle, and a thin quadrantal projection, c, eX- tending upward from the said tenon.
The tube-sight (shown at B) consists of a short tube, d, fixed to a base, e, which has at its middle a inortise,f, to receive the tenon b. A screw or pin, g, goes laterally through the base e and the said tenon b, and serves to couple the tube-sight to the foresight when 4o the latter is in place on the front part of a rifle-barrel. The said tube d has init a trans- Verse slot, h, that extends from the top of the tube down to or about to a level with the axis of thetube. This slot is to receive the eyepiece C that, formed, as represented in the drawings, is slipped into the slot until the shoulders z' of such eye-piece rest on the ends of the slot, in which case the little eye,7c,of the (No model.)
eye-piece will be brought into its correct position in the tube d. The said eye-piece G 5o consists of two circular rings, k and Z, connected by a radial arni, m, the outer ring, l,A having shoulders i, arranged with or formed in it as represented. A turn-button or arm, D, arranged on the top of the tube d and pivoted 5 5 thereto, serves, when turned across the top of the eye-piece G,to keep such eye-piece in place in the slot 7L.
Froin the above it will be seen that the tubesight can be readily connected with or discon- 6o nected froin the foresight, and may be used with it as occasion may required either with or without the eye-piece.
When the eye-piece is within the tube-sight, the radial arIn m cornes directlyin front of the projection c, and the inner ring, 7c, of the eyepiece extends above such projection.
Il. The combination of the tube-sight,slotted transversely, as described, with an eye-piece, 7o substantially as represented, extended into the slot, such tube-sight being provided with a device or turn-button pivoted to it and arranged with its slot, and adapted to swing over it in order to secure the eye-piece in place, as set forth.
2. The combination of the eye-piece, substantially as described, having shoulders i c, and consisting of two concentric rin gs and their connection-piece,with a slotted tube-sight and 8o a foresight, as represented.
3. The combination of the tube-sight, slotted transversely and having a mortised base, and adapted to swing over it in order to secure the eye-piece in place, as set forth, with the fore- 8 5 sight having a tenon to extend into the niortise of the base, and a pin to go through the base and tenon, and with an eye-piece, substantially as represented, extended into the slot, such tube-sight being provided with a de- 9o vice or turn-button pivoted to it and arranged with its slot, as set forth. l
