Beit known that I, WM. H. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Book-Racks, of which the following is a specification, ret'- erence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to folding book cases or racks; and it consists in the construction and application to a series of shelves and corner posts or uprights of braces or stays located either above or below the rack, or both, the shelves being so attached to the cornerposts as to be readily adjusted in the manner hereinafter to be more fully set forth.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View, of my improved book-rack, the brace being shown as located above the shelves and posts. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the saine. Fig. 3 is also an end elevation,the brace being shown in strong lines below the rack and in dotted lines above. Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation of an end of one of the posts, showing the brace-attachin g mechanism partly in section. Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view cut through a portion of one of the posts and an adjustable shelf.

Posts A are attached by means of screws c to the corners of shelves B in such a manner as to admit of the swinging or folding of the shelves, as shown in Fig. 3 by dotted lines. Constructed upon the upper, the lower, or upon both ends of each post are fixed vertically-projecting screw-bolts Z1, each bolt being provided with an ornamental nut, c.

Braces C, constructed either as a plain strip or bar, as shownin Figs. l, 3 and 4, or as an ornamcnted or scroll bracket, as in Fig. 2, are y provided with horizontal eyes g g, through which pass the `screw-bolts b b, and are attached to the ends of the posts by means of the screw-bolts and nuts hereinbefore described, whereby the posts are securely held in such a position in relation to the shelves as to cause the latter to retain a horizontal position.

The shelves may be folded for the purposes of packing or shipment, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3, by detaching each brace at one end from the screw-bolt to which it is attached.

A connecting rod or wire, D, is provided at each end with an eye, d', through which also passes the screw-bolt b,hereinbefore described (No model.)

A series of loops, d', are constructed at convenient distances 4from each other on this rod, by which the rack is hung upon the Wall when desired. A plainre-enforce rod (shown in dott-ed lines in Fig. l) may be used either with or without the looped rod just described.

Each post is provided at stated intervals with intermediate screw-holes, c c, which, in conjunction with screws a a', admit of the proper adjustment or spacing of the intermediate shelves, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5.

I am aware that folding shelves held open or in a horizontal plane by means of braces have heretofore been used. I am also aware that towel-racks and similar articles of furniture have heretofore been provided with a cross or connecting rod having loops formed thereon for purposes of hanging the rack or si miiar article upon the wall; but my means of attaching this connecting-rod and the hereinbefore-described braces to the posts of the rack is, to my best knowledge and belief, novel and patentable. These braces and connecting-rod I do not, therefore, broadly claim; but

that l do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a folding book-rack, the combination of the shelves pivoted to the posts, the rear corner-posts provided with fixed screw-bolts b b, as described, the clamping-nuts c o, and the connectingrod D, provided with a horizontal eye, d, at cach end thereof, through which fixed screw-bolts constructed on the rear posts pass, and further provided with hanging loops d', as and for the purposes specied.

2. In a folding book-rack constructed with posts provided with fixed vertically-projecting screw-bolts b at the ends thereof, in combination with the connecting hanging rod D, provided with horizontal eyes d, through which the screw-bolts pass, as described, the braces C, provided vwith eyes g g at the ends thereof, through which the screw-bolts also pass, clamping-nuts c c, and shelves pivoted to the posts, substantially as set forth.
