To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES THITE, of Osceola, in the county of Polk and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Detachable Handle and Safty-Lock Attachment for Valises, Satchels, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the handles of valises, satchels, handbags, and other hand-luggage.

The objects of my invention are to attach the handles securely, and to permit detaching the handle without leaving an opening in the top of the lock-casing.

The invention consists in the combination, with a lock for hand-luggage, of a detachable handle and a slide for holding the handle on the casing of the look, all as will be fully set forth hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,forming a part of this specification,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

The angle-plate A, forming the top of the lock casing, is provided with two transverse slots, B, in its top, and with a longitudinal slot, 0, in the side.

On the top surface of the angle-plate D, secured below the plate A, a sliding plate, E, is arranged,which is provided at its middle with a lower part, E, between the end parts, E.

A longitudinal slot, F, is provided, through which a stud, G, projects upward from the plate D. p

A spring, H, is secured to the stud G and to the sliding plate E, which pushes the said plate E in the direction of the arrow a.

A pin, J, projects from the sliding plate E through the slot C in the plate A.

A U-shaped notch or recess, K, is formed in one end of one part E of the plate E, and a T-shaped slot, L, is formed in the other part E".

Two vertical slots, M, are irovided in the upwardly-projecting part of the plate D, and horizontally-projecting bolts N are arranged on the slide E. The tumbler O is pivoted on the horizontal portion of the plate D, and is provided at its free end with a projection or tooth, I, and a notch, Q, for thebit of thekey, which is adapted to turn on a key-post, R, projecting upward from the plate D below the key-slot Sin the plate A.

The sliding plate E is provided with a downwardly-projecting part, T, having anotch, W.

The handle U is secured on the ends of a plate, V, and from the bottom of the plate V a T-shaped or dovetailed lug, 1, projects at each end.

The operation is as follows: The slide E is moved in the inverse direction of the arrow a by means of the pin J until it is stopped by the stud G coming in contact with one end of the slot F. The lugs I on the handle-plate V are passed through the slots B and the pin J released, whereby the slide E is moved in the direction of the arrow a, and parts of the slide E are passed over the lower parts of the lugs I, thus holding them and the handle in place. At the same time the bolts N are passed through the apertured lugs on the opposite frame of the valise, &c.,which have been previously passed through the slots M, and whereby the valise, 850., is locked. The key is inserted and turned in such a manner as to swing the tumbler O and bring the tooth or projection P into the notch V in the part T of the slide, thus locking the slidein place.

To remove the handle, the tumbler O is swung to release the slide E, and the said slide is moved in the inverse direction of the arrow a and the handle removed. The pin J is released and the spring H moves the slide in the direction of the arrow a, and the bolts N lock the two parts of the valise together, and the slots L and recess K are covered by the plate A. The tumbler O is then swung to bring the projection P against the edge of the part T, thus locking the slide in place.

To open the valise,the tumbler must be disengaged from the part T, and then the slide E is moved in the inverse direction of the arrow a to withdraw the bolts N. The handle can thus be removed from the valise, &c., and

cannot be replaced without the use of a key, thus rendering it difficult or impossible tocarry the valise.

\Vhen the handle is removed, the slots B are closed by the plate E.

The tumbler 0 may be provided with a spring for holdingit in place, or with a projecting part, a, on its under surface, the said part being adapted to engage with an indentation in the upper surface of the horizontal part of the plate D in the usual manner.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the lock-frame of a Valise or luggage holder and alocking mechanism arranged to operate, substantially as described, at the opposite ends thereof, of a detachable handle constructed to engage with its ends the said locking mechanism,whereby said handle may be entirely removed from the valise, substantially as set forth.

2. In a lock for hand-luggage, the combinalion, with the loclrfranie, slotted at opposite ends on its upper surface, and a locking-slide within the said frame. of a detachable handle pivoted at its opposite ends with lugs con structed to pass through said slots and be locked by the slide, substantially as and for. the purpose set forth.

3. In a lock for handluggage, the combination, with the lock-frame, of a slide provided with bolts, a tumbler for locking the slide in place,and of-detachable handle having lugs,

substantially as herein shown and described.

4. 'In'a' lock for hand-lu'gg'aga'the combination, with the lock-frame having slots, of a slide in the lock-frame, and provided with slots and notches and with bolts, and of a detachable handle provided with lugs, substantially as herein shown and described.

5. In a look for hand-luggage, the combination, with the casing-having slots B, of the slide E, having a slot, L, and notch K, and a slot, F, the stud G, the spring H, the pin J, and the tumbler-0, substantially as herein shown and described.-

6. In a lock for hand-luggage, the combination, with a casinghavingslots and a notch, of the part T, having a notch, WV, the bolts N, the tumbler 0, having a tooth or projection, P, and of the key-post R, substantially as herein shown and described.

7. In a lock for hand-luggage, the combination, with a casing having slots, of a slide in the casing, a pin projecting from the slide through a slot in the side of the casing, and a detachable handle having lugs which can be passed through the slots in the casing, substantially as herein shown and described.
