Description
June 1965 G. H. HARRIS ETAL 3,
ROD GUIDE APPLICATORS Filed Feb. 26, 1965 GLEN H. HARRIS DONALD E. SABLE INVENTORS ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,186,079 ROD GUIDE APPLIEATORS Glen H. Harris, 1309 N. Fielder, Arlington, Tern, and Donald E. Sable, 4413 Windsor, Dallas, Tex.
Filed Feb. 26, 1963, Ser. No. 261,141 5 4 Claims. (Cl. 29-4236) This invention relates to applicators used in mounting guides on pump actuating rod strings used in wells, and more particularly for mounting guides which have opposed parallel rod passing slots near their opposed ends and an axially disposed rod receiving opening therethrough which opening communicates with the slots. The guide is further distinguished by a slot transverse of the guide connecting the parallel oppositely disposed rod receiving slots.
The guide being mountable on the rod by first bringing the guide and rod into the position wherein the rod is received by the transverse slot then rotated about its axis to pass the rod through the opposed parallel slots until the rod is received into the centrally disposed opening of the guide as more fully shown in our co-pending application, Serial No. 261,016, filed February 26, 1963.
The present invention provides novel means whereby such guides are rotated about their axes to cause the rods to pass the opposed parallel slots over the rod and position the latter in the central opening through the guide.
Our invention will readily be understood by those skilled in the art by the following description together with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE I is a schematic elevation of a rod guide to be mounted on a rod by our applicator;
FIGURE II is the guide cradling part of our applicator with receiver for an axial rotating means for same;
FIGURE III is one form of applicator rotating means;
FIGURE IV shows the guide of FIGURE I cradled by our applicator;
FIGURE V shows the transverse slot of the cradled guide about the rod; while,
FIGURE VI shows the position of the elements as the guide is finally mounted on the rod.
Proceeding with the description, similar parts of the several figures are indicated by identical numerals wherein: 10 is a rod guide having opposed parallel rod passing slots 11 adjacent its respective ends which are connected by transverse opening 12, and a centrally disposed axial rod receiving opening 13 therethrough. 14 is a metallic or other rigid material cradle shown as a generally tubular shape having fingers 14a for embracing the guide 10 adjacent its end sections and having an intermediate side wall portion 14b opposite a transverse slot 15 cooperative with the transverse slot 12 of the guide when the latter is applied to a rod. 16 is the rod 3186,79 Patented June 1, 1.965
and I7 is a handle or lever which in a preferred form may have detachable coupling means 18 connecting it to the cradle 14 by which our applicator rotates the guide axially about the rod through the axial slots 14c and into operative mounting thereon.
The applicator may now be readily removed from about the guide and the rod by releasing the cradling of the guide and passing the rod reversely of the opening 15 in the cradle.
It will be readily apparent that the mounting of the guide on the rod and removal of our applicator there from may be affected by scissor-like movements between the applicator handle and the rod which is easily accomplished by the hands of a single operator.
Also, by cradling the guide at 180 angle from the installing position and applying axial rotative pressure on the guide, the guide may be brought into position where the rod is removed from the opening centrally of the guide into the rod passing slots whereupon the guide may be readily removed from the rod.
What we claim is:
1. A red guide applicator comprising:
a forked cradle including guide receiving fingers joined by an intermediate portion and spaced apart by a guide receiving slot;
and a handle attached to said intermediate portion of the cradle and extending away from the cradle in a direction which is approximately normal to the direction in which the fingers extend away from the intermediate portion of the cradle.
2. An applicator for snapping a guide on a rod, comprising:
a cradle of generally tubular shape and having an axial opening through it sized to receive the guide, the cradle having side walls and having a transverse slot therethrough, and having axial slots therein extending from the transverse slot respectively to the opposite ends of the cradle and on opposite sides thereof; and
a handle lying in a plane substantially parallel to the axis of the cradle and connected to an intermediate side-wall portion of the latter out of alignment with said slots.
3. In an applicator as set forth in claim 2, detachable coupling means connecting the handle to the cradle.
4. In an applicator as set forth in claim 2, the handle making an acute angle with respect to the axis of the cradle.
