VELOCIPEDE-SADDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,568, dated May 26,1885.
Application filed February 7, 1885.
To all whom, it 17mg concern:
Be it known that l, .Toi-1N KNoUs, of the city of Hartford, in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Velocipede-Saddles, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate more particularly to those parts of velocipede-saddles which pertain to the attachment for securing them upon the velocipede, and are here set forth in the form of improvements upon the mechanism shown in Letters Patent No. 312,219, dated February 10, 1885, to C. E. Pratt; and the nature of them will be apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows in bottom plan a bicycle spring and saddle with my improvements in one form. Fig. 2 shows the same in rear elevation and part section, and Fig. 3 shows the same in part section enlarged without the flexile portion of the saddle-plate and looking toward the rear.
A is theupper portion of the saddle. B is the under portion of the saddle or the saddleplate. C is the bicycle-spring. D D are rivets or bolts passing through the saddle-plate and forming an attachment for the plate E, the bolt D having a nut, cl, to keep the parts operating upon it in place. E is a supportingplate or spring-plate, at one end of which I form the two dogs or catches e e, to form two points of contact with the edge ofthe spring, and at the other end I form on it a way, G, in which the follower may work to form another point of contact with the spring. This construction gives a very simple and efficient form with the fewest possible pieces and the best possible hold on the spring.
Fis a follower having a lip, f, to operate against the spring C, and a slot, f to allow of motion upon the bolt D.
K is a cam-lever, having an eccentric part, k.
H is a deteut attached at one end, 71., to the saddle-plate I5, from which it proceeds in the form of a spring in the direction shown, and which has on one side a notched or graduated part for which one end of the lever K is fitted.
The operation of this contrivance is as fol- (No model.)
lows: Vhen a saddle is free from the spring and it is desired to attach it, the lever K, being loose and turned so that the eccentric k is back from the lip f, the saddle is placed in proper position on the spring, with the dogs e e against it on one side. The lever K is then turned backward to and upon the graduated edge of the deteut H until the eccentric k presses the follower F firmly against the other side of the spring C, when the edge of the lever engages with one of the notches in the positive deteut H, which by the action of the spring is kept in contact therewith, and all parts are held against any jarring or accident in proper position. Vhen it is desired to remove the saddle, the free end of the detent H is pressed out of contact with the lever K, the lever turned away from it and forward, the follower F released, and the saddle is removable.
I have shown and described these parts as attached to a bicycle-saddle and a bicyclespring; but it is obvious that they may be equally applicable to saddles for other velocipedes and for attachment to other forms of springs or to other parts of the frame of a velocipede. It is obvious also that modifications may be made in the form and arrangement of parts without departing from the nature of my invention; and I do not mean to contine myself precisely to the things shown and described.
I am aware of Letters Patent No. 151,680, and do not claim anything shown or described therein.
I claim as new and of my invention- 1. The combination of a plate, E, having dogs e c, and a way, G, a slide-follower, F, operating in the way, and a cam-lever, K It, to operate the follower, essentially as set forth.
2. In a velocipede-saddle, and combined with mechanism for attaching it to and releasing it from a spring or perch, a deteut, H, and a lever, K, with a spring and cam or equivalent mechanism, constructed and operating essentially as set forth.
