4 Claims. ,(Cl. 285-483) This invention relates to'improvements in sheet metal ducts, such as are employed for conveying heated, cooled it or otherwise conditioned air, smoke or gases, and more particularly to a duct connection which can be slid into and out of operating position.
An object of the present invention is to provide a sheet metal duct connection betweena furnace and a chimney which can he slid into and out of operating position as the need arises for cleaning the chimney.
Another object of the present invention is to provide interchangeable takeoff connections which may be united with amain stack connection.
Still another object of the presentinvention is to provide prefabricated reducing connectionswhich requires .stocking a small number of standard parts.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a sheet metal fitting which may be made with p a minimum of waste material.
And still a further object .of the present invention is to provide a separable takeoff connection or boot and a stack adapter wherein either the boot or stack adapter may be replaced or substituted and-which requires no cutting or other fabricating for the substitution.
A further object of the present invention is toprovide interchangeable takeoff connections and stack adapters which, when combined, constitute a duct of sturdy construction which is not easily collapsed, and which may be separated to facilitate storage or transportation.

In proceeding with this invention there is provided a hood or boot, generally designatedby reference. numeral 11, and a stack fitting or stack adapter, generally designated by reference numeral 12.
FIGURE 5 is a Hat layout of the body of hood 11 before bending. Fold line 9 indicates where a bead 15 is formed in the front portion of the body of hood 11 (see FIGURE 3).
The hood consists further of a heel 17 having adjacent side cheeks 18, 20. Right. side cheek 18 is provided with a right side neck portion 21 having a flap 22. *Left side cheek is providedwith a left side neck portion 23. The edge portion 24,0f right side cheek 18 is separated from the edge portion 25 of neck portion 21 by means of a cut 27. Edge portion 28 of left side cheek 20 is separated from edge portion 30 of left side neck portion 23 by means ofcut-31. A rear edge portion 32 extends beyond heel 17.
Fold lines 33 indicate the approximate ninety degree ice bend made between right side cheek 18 and heel 17. Fold line 34 indicates the approximate ninety degree bend made between left side cheek 20 and heel 17. Fold line 35 indicates the approximate ninety degree bend between right side'cheek 18 and right side neck portion 21. Fold line 36 indicates the approximate ninety degree bend between left" side cheek 20 and left side neck portion 23. Fold line 37 indicates where rear edge portion 32 is folded upon itself to form guard strip 32A (see FIGURES 1 and 3). Fold line 38 indicates where ri ht side edge portion 24 is folded upon itself to form right side rail 24A (see FIGURES 1, 2 and 4). Fold line 38A indicates where edge portion 25 is folded upon itself to form front rail 25A (see FIGURES 1 and 3). With the folds and bends made as described, supra,

Collar 13 (FIGURE 7) will take the round form shown in FIGURES l, 2 and 3, and be attached to bead 15 through the projecting edge of bead 5. Rivets 43 will fasten collar 13 in round form around bead 15. 7

The stack fitting 12 is essentially a flat strip provided with a plurality of rectangular cuts vasindicated at 46, 46A, 47, 47A, 48 and 48A andan end projection. 49.

Surface 60 is folded along line 50 and against surface 61. Surface 61 is folded along line 51 and over surface 62 to provide pocket 63. Surface 64 is bent at ninety degrees to surface 62 along line 52. Surface 65 is bent at ninety degrees to surface 64 and is parallel to surface 62, the bend taking place along line 53. Surface66 is folded under surface 65 along line 54. Surface 67 provided with saw teeth 45 is bent at right angles to surface 66 along line 55. In like manner, surface 76 is folded along line 50 and against surface '71. Surface 71 is folded along line51 and over surface 72 to provide pocket 73. Surface 74 is bent at ninety degrees to surface 72 along line 52. Surface 75 is bent at'ninety degrees to surface 74 and is parallel to surface 72, the bend taking place along line 53. Surface 76 is folded under surface 75 along line 54. Surface 77 provided with saw teeth 45 is bent at right angles to surface 76 along line 55. In this manner the left side'of stack fitting 12 is formed when the right angle fold along line 56 is made (see FIGURES 1, 2 and 4).
Surface 80 is folded along line 50 and against surface 81. Surface 81 is folded along line 51 and over surface 82. Surface 84 is bent at ninety degrees to surface 82 along line 52. Surface is bent at ninety degrees to surface 84 and is parallel to surface 82,.the bend taking place along line 53. Surface 86 is folded under surface 85 along line 54. In this manner the right side of stack fitting 12 is formed when the right angle fold along line 58 is made (see FIGURES 1, 2, 4 and 6). End projection 49 is folded along line 59 and is fastened to surface 94 as by welding or riveting, as shown at 99.
Having shown and described a preferred embodiment of the present invention by way of example, it should be realized that structural changes could be made and other examples given without departing from either the spirit or scope of this invention.
What I claim is:
1. A sheet metal duct consisting of a hood slidably mounted in a stack adapter, said hood consisting of a body of pre-cut flat sheet of material folded to provide a bead and a heel having a rear edge, adjacent cheeks having neck portions, and side portions and said neck portions having front portions, said adjacent cheeks being parallel to each other and at approximately ninety degrees to said heel, said neck portions being approximately ninety degrees to said adjacent cheeks, a collar provided with an escalloped edge, means fastening said collar and said neck portions together, said rear edge being folded upon itself to form a guard strip, said side portions being folded upon themselves to form opposite and parallel side rails, and said front portions being folded upon themselves to form a front rail, said stack adapter consisting of a pre-cut fiat sheet of material folded to provide a rectangular shaped member having saw shaped teeth along a bottom edge, a front pocket and two parallel side pockets, said opposite and parallel side rails being slidably mounted in said two parallel side pockets, said front rail engaging and disengaging said front pocket and said guard rail overlying a portion of said rectangular shaped member.
2. A sheet metal duct consisting of a hood and a stack adapter, said hood consisting of a body provided with a bead and a heel having a rear edge, a cheek having a side rail portion and a neck portion, said cheek being at substantially a right angle to said heel, said neck portion in a position at substantially a right angle to said cheek, a front rail integrally formed in said neck portion, a second cheek having a side rail portion and a neck portion, said second cheek being at substantially a right angle to said heel and substantially parallel to said first mentioned cheek, said second mentioned neck portion in a position at substantially a right angle to said second mentioned cheek, a front rail integrally formed in said second mentioned neck portion, means fastening said first mentioned cheek and second mentioned cheek together, said stack adapter consisting of a rectangular member having a front side, a left side, a right side and a back side, said left side, right side and front side, each having a saw toothed edge, a lower pocket at right angles to the saw toothed edge, a separating wall substantially parallel to the saw toothed edge, an upper pocket substantially parallel to the lower pocket and substantially parallel to the lower pocket and at substantially ninety degrees to the separating wall, said back side having a saw toothed edge, a lower pocket at substantially right angles to the saw toothed edge, a separating wall substantiaily parallel to the saw toothed edge and an upper guard surface substantially parallel to the lower pocket and at substantially ninety degrees to the separating wall, said side rails slidingly engaging, respectively, said upper pockets in said left side and said right side, said front rail engaging said upper front rail pocket and said rear edge overlying said upper guard surface.
3. A sheet metal duct consisting of a hood and a stack adapter, said hood consisting of a body provided with a bead and having a heel provided with a right side cheek secured to said heel at substantially right angles thereto, and provided with a right side neck portion at substantially right angles to said right side cheek, and a right side rail, said right side neck portion provided with a right side front rail, a left side cheek secured to said heel at substantially right angles thereto, and provided with a left side neck portion at substantially right angles to said left side cheek, and a left side rail, said left side neck portion provided with a left side front rail, means securing said right side neck portion and said left side neck portion together, said stack adapter consisting of a rectangular member having a front side, a left side, a right side and a back side, said left side, right side and front side, each having a saw toothed edge, a lower pocket at right angles to the saw toothed edge, a separating wall substantially parallel to the saw toothed edge, an upper pocket substantially parallel to the lower pocket and at substantially ninety degrees to the separating wall, said back side having a saw toothed edge, a lower pocket at substantially right angles to the saw toothed edge, a separating wall substantially parallel to the saw toothed edge, and an upper guard surface substantially parallel to the lower pocket and at substantially ninety degrees to the separating wall, said right side rail slidingly engaging the upper pocket in the right side, said left side rail slidingly engaging the upper pocket in the left side, said right side front rail and said left side front rail engaging the upper pocket in the front side, and said guard strip engaging said upper guard surface.
4. A sheet metal duct consisting of a hood and a stack adapter, said hood consisting of a body provided with a bead and having a heel provided with a rear edge portion folded upon itself to provide a guard strip, a right side cheek secured to said heel at substantially right angles thereto, and provided with a right side neck portion at substantially right angles to said right side cheek, and a right side edge portion folded upon itself to form a right side rail, said right side neck portion provided with an edge portion folded upon itself to form a right side front rail, a left side cheek secured to said heel at substantially right angles thereto, and provided with a left side neck portion at substantially right angles to said left side cheek, and a left side edge portion folded upon itself to form a left side rail, said left side neck portion provided with an edge portion folded upon itself to form a left side front rail, means securing said right side neck portion and said left side neck portion together, said stack adapter consisting of a rectangular member having a front side, a left side, a right side and a back side, said left side, right side and front side, each having a saw toothed edge, a lower platform at right angles to the saw toothed edge, a separating wall substantially parallel to the saw toothed edge, an upper pocket substantially parallel to the lower platform and at substantially ninety degrees to the separating wall, said back side having a saw toothed edge, a lower platform at substantially right angles to the saw toothed edge, a separating wall substantially parallel to the saw toothed edge, and an edge portion folded upon itself to form an upper guard surface substantially parallel to the lower platform and at substantially ninety degrees to the separating wall, said right side rail slidingly engaging the upper pocket in the right side, said left side rail slidingly engaging the upper pocket in the left side, said right side front rail and said left side front rail engaging the upper pocket in the front side, and said guard strip engaging said upper guard surface.

Claims (1)

1. A SHEET METAL DUCT CONSISTING OF HOOD SLIDABLY MOUNTED IN A STACK ADAPTER, SAID HOOD CONSISTING OF A BODY OF PRE-CUT FLAT SHEET OF MATERIAL FOLDED TO PROVIDA BEAD AND A HEEL HAVING A REAR EDGE, ADJACENT CHEEKS HAVING NECK PORTIONS, AND SIDE PORTIONS AND SAID NECK PORTIONS HAVING FRONT PORTIONS, SAID ADJACENT CHECKS BEING PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER AND AT APPROXIMATELY NINETY DEGREES TO SAID HEEL, SAID NECK PORTIONS BEING APPROXIMATELY NINETY DEGREES TO SAID ADJACENT CHEEKS, A COLLAR PROVIDED WITH AN ESCALLOPED EDGE, MEANS FASTINGING SAID COLLAR AND SAID NECK PORTIONS TOGETHER, SAID REAR EDGE BEING FOLDED UPON ITSELF TO FORM A GUARD STRIP, SAID SIDE PORTIONS BEING FOLDED UPON THEMSELVES TO FORM OPPOSITE AND PARAL-
