To ail whom it'mtty concern:

Be it known that I, ERNST HOHNEOK, of Jamestown, in the county of Stutsman and Territory of" Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tacks and Bivets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in combined tacks and-rivets.

In the construction of my improved carpetfastener for which Letters Patent No. 300,366 were granted to myself and Elise Hohneck, June 17, 1884, tacks were shown and described as securely set in a metal plate or in an upper and lower washer, to be ready for use in securing the fastener to the floor.

The object of my present invention is to provide a tack with a rivet-extension, whereby it is adapted to be secured to a strip, sheet, or plate of metal or other material; and with this end in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the combined tack and rivet partly in section, and Fig. 2 shows the same secured to a portion of a carpet-fastener.

A represents the tack portion of the combined tack and rivet. The construction of the portion A is quite similar to that of an ordinary carpet-tack. The rivet portion B is formed integral with the head of the tack portion A, and consists of a hollow tube of metal extending above the head in a line with the prong of the tack. The length of the portion B is determined by the thickness of the ma terial through which it is to be passed. Suppose, for example, that the tacks are to be secured to a strip of leather, as represented in Fig. 2. The strip is provided with a metal washer on the upper and lower sides. The portion B of the tack-rivet is passed through the two washers and the strip, the washer on the lower side resting on the tack-head. The endof the portion B, extending a short distance above the face of the upper washer, is

then upset and riveted down, drawing the washers in snug contact with the leather and securing the tack firmly thereto. The attachment of the tack-rivet to a single plate of metal, forming a connection between two links, as shown in the chain-fastener in the patent above referred to, is accomplished in a manner quite similar to that just described, the upper and lower faces of the plate in this instance serving in the place of washers.

It is evident that the tack-rivet constructed as described may be applied to other uses than that describedas, for example, to a wire for forming prongs for fencing purposesand the rivet portion may be hollow the entire length or only a short distance'from the upper end, or it may be solid; but the latter is not thought as desirable for the purposes to which it is at present applied, as it requires more force to upset it and more metal to construct it.

The tack-rivet may also be provided with an enlarged tack-head and secured to a strip of leather or other tough material without the use of washers, or an upper washer may be used and the under washer dispensed with; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the construction shown, but reserve the privilege of making such changes as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I, claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A sharp metal prong having a rivet-extension formed integral with its head, substantially as set forth.

2. A tack having a rivet-extension of less diameter than the head formed integral therewith, substantially as set forth.

3. A tack having a rivet-extension formed integral therewith, said rivet-extension having a hollow end, substantially as set forth.
