(Cl. 280-81) My invention relates to new and useful improvements in wheel mounting assemblies for harrow draw bars. It is conventional to supply a single castoring wheel adjacent each end of a harrow draw bar but this suffers from several disadvantages.
The principal disadvantage is the loss of stability with a single wheel, particularly when used with relatively wide harrow draw bars as, upon uneven ground, a considerable amount of cantilever action occurs throwing strain upon the harrow draw bar and interfering with the harrowing operation.
Also, with such relatively wide draw bars, tracking is not satisfactory when the draw bar is in the towing position for movement from one location to another.
By providing a freely rotatable sleeve upon each end of the harrow draw bar carrying a pair of wheels transversely to the draw bar one in front and one to the rear thereof, stability is improved and a two-point support is provided which not only facilitates the operation of the draw bar when in use but makes transportation relatively easy from one location to the other.
The principal object and essence of my invention is therefore to provide a device of the character herewithin described which incorporates a double castoring wheel assembly upon each end of the harrow draw bar which not only permits the wheels to castor but permits the wheel carrying support bar to pivot or rotate at right angles to the axis of the draw bar.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is particularly suitable for use with relatively wide harrow draw bars and facilitates not only the operation thereof but the transportation thereof when in the folded position.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which is simple in construction, economical in manufacture, and otherwise well suited to the purpose for which it is designed.
With th foregoing objects in view, and such other objects and advantages as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates as this specification proceeds, my invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts all as hereinafter more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation of one end of a harrow draw bar showing one of my pairs of wheels.
FEGURE 2 is an end elevation of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view substantially along the line 3-3 of FIGURE 1 but with the castoring wheel removed.
FIGURE 4 is a top plan view of my invention.
FIGURE 5 is a top plan schematic View of the draw bar in reduced scale to the remainder of the drawings.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
Proceeding therefore to describe my invention in detail, represents the conventional cylindrical narrowdraw bar main beam and 11 designates collectively my assembly.
In detail, the assembly comprises a wheel support bar 12 preferably in the form of a cylindrical tube having a pair of plates 13 secured by the upper ends thereof as by welding 14, to the sides of the support bar 12 and extending downwardly therefrom in spaced and parallel relationship.
3,184,250 Patented May 18, 1965 'ice The lower ends of these plates are cut arcuately and engage over the outer surface of a bearing sleeve 14, being secured thereto as by welding 15. It will therefore be observed that the wheel support bar is situated at approximately 30 to the axis of the harrow draw bar main beam and extends fore and aft thereof.
Adjacent the ends 16 of the wheel support bar, I have mounted a pair of ground engaging wheels 17, said mounting being within forks 18 secured to the aforementioned ends 16 by means of pivots 18' thus providing a castoring action to the pair of wheels 17. The fact that the wheel support bar is at a 30 angle means that the two wheels 17 do not run in the same track.
The aforementioned bearing sleeve 14' is bearably supported upon the draw bar main beam for rotation thereof and endwise movement is prevented by the provision of a pair of collars 19 surrounding the draw bar main beam 10 and being secured thereto as clearly shown in FIG- URE 2.
In operation, the tandem wheel assembly at each end of the harrow draw bar permits fore and aft movement due to the rotation of the sleeve 14' upon the main beam thus taking up any imperfections in the ground, it being appreciated that the wheels 17 castor in the normal manner.
If the draw bar is folded for transportation, then of course, the castoring wheels automatically take up the line of travel once again giving stability to the assembly.
Since various modifications can be made in my invention as hereinabove described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made within the spirit and scope of the claim without departing from such spirit and scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
A wheel mounting assembly for harrow draw bars comprising in combination with the main beam of said draw bar, a wheel support bar disposed at an angle to the main draw bar beam, one of said support bars adjacent each end of said draw bar main beam, and means mounting said Wheel support bars on said draw bar main beam, and a ground engaging wheel mounted for castoring action adjacent each end of each of wheel support bars, one fore and one aft of said main beam, said means to mount each of said wheel support bars on said draw bar main beam comprising a sleeve freely mounted upon said draw bar main beam for rotation thereon, plate means connecting said wheel support bar and said sleeve whereby said wheel support bar overlies said draw bar main beam, and a collar on said draw bar main beam upon each side of said sleeve limiting sideways movement of said sleeve upon said draw bar main beam, said plate means including a pair of plates secured to said sleeve and extending upwardly therefrom in spaced and parallel relationship, the upper ends of said plates engaging and being secured to the sides of said wheel support bar substantially intermediate the ends thereof.
