Williamson, 101 Westview Ave., Greenville, S.C. Filed Nov. 19, 1962, Ser. No. 238,672 1 Claim. (Cl. 287-96) This invention relates to textile ring frames and more especially to an improved traversing mechanism therefor. During the operation of a ring frame, the shifter rod imparts an oscillating motion to the upright arm thus initiating the traversing of the ring rail. It is important that there be no lost motion between the shifter rod and the upright arm because such lost motion would be multiplied by the mechanism transmitting such motion to the ring rail. An uneven traversing motion of the ring rail results in uneven distribution of the yarn upon the yarn packages which adversely afiects the entire packaging procedure. The piling up of yarn which occurs on the change in direction of the traverse of the ring rail results in breakage of the yarn when it is run off of the bobbin. Heretofore, the connection between the shifter rod and the upright arm was in the form of a pin upon which the upright arm pivoted. This pin in time becomes seriously worn due to repeated oscillation of the upright arm which results in an uneven traversing motion being imparted to the ring rail.
Accordingly, it is an important object of this invention to eliminate an uneven traversing motion of the ring rail and its adverse affect upon the packaging of the yarn.
Another important object of the invention is to provide an attachment for making a close connection having a minimum of friction and subject to a minimum of wear between the shifter rod and the upright arm of a ring frame.
The construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described together with other features thereof.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, wherein an example of the invent-ion is shown and wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view illustrating a ring frame equipped with a device constructed in accordance with the present invention,
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged perspective view, with parts broken away, illustrating details of the device shown in FIGURE 1, and
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 in FIGURE 2.
The drawing illustrates a device constructed in accordance with the present invention mounted-for operation upon a ring frame of a conventional design. The ring frame has side frame members and an upright arm 11 mounted upon a rocker shaft 12 for transmitting motion from .the shifter rod 13 to the ring rail 14 through the lifter rod 15. A longitudinal link A is adapted to be interposed in and connected adjacent each end thereof to the shifter rod 13. A housing B is formed in the intermediate portion of the link for carrying a sealed bearing unit C therein. A shaft D has a pressed fit within the bearing C passing through the upright arm 11. Means E are provided for fixing the shaft D against rotation with respect to the upright arm 11.
The frame 10 of the spinning frame supports a box rail 3,183,026 Patented May 11, 1965 16 which supports the bolsters 17 of the spindles 18. The spindles 18 are driven by the usual tape drive 19. The ring rail 14, which traverses the spindles in anup and down oscillatory motion, distributes the yarn from the rings to the spindles to form a package. The traversing motion is imparted to the ring rail 14 by the lifter rods which move up and down in the direction of the arrow in FIGURE 1. The lifter rod is guided by the bearings 20 in the upper and lower flanges of the :box rail 16. The
rocker shafts 12 impart an oscillatory arcuate motion in r the direction of the arrow in FIGURE 1 to the links 21 which produce the traversing motion in the lifter rods 15. The rocker shaft 12 carries an upright arm 11 which is fixed thereto by the set screw 22.
The upper portion of the upright arm 11 is bifurcated and has a pair of spaced upstanding portions 11a and 11b receiving the link A therebetween. The link A has a housing B in the medial portion thereof for receiving antifriction means forming a pivotal connection with the upright arm 11. A longitudinal recessed portion 23 is provided adjacent each end of the link A for receiving ends of the shifter rod 13 into which the device is interposed. Further connection is provided for the shifter rod members 13 with the link A in the form of bolts 24.
A sealed ball bearing unit C is received by the housing B, the inner-race 25 of which has a pressed fit with a shaft D which passes through the upstanding portions 11a and 11b. The sealed bearing C has ball bearings 26 and an outer race 27 as Well as seals 28 and 29. A retaining ring 30 confines .the bearing elements within the housing B which has an enlarged rim 31 for retaining the bearing members.
The means E includes a pin 32 carried by the shaft D. The pin 32 extends into a slot or seat 33 to fix the shaft D against rotation with respect to the upright arm 11.
The shaft D carries a head 34 on one end thereof, while the free end of the shaft is threaded as at 35 to receive a nut 36. A look washer 37 is provided to positively position the nut 36. Thus friction between the shaft D and the upright arm 11 iseliminated and a connection is made subject to a minimum of wear and having a minimum of friction to provide a positive uniform traversing motion of the ring rail resulting in a uniform yarn packaging procedure. 7
While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been described using specific terms, such description is for illustrative purposes only, and it is to be understood that changes and variations may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the following claim.
What is claimed is:
For use in a ring frame having an upright arm carried by a horizontal rocker shaft longitudinally disposed with l V respect to the ring frame for transmitting motion from a shifter rod to a lifter rod for imparting a traversing motion to the ringnail, the improvement including, a horizontal longitudinally disposed link adapted to be interposed in the shifter rod in alignment therewith, means for rigidly connecting the link adjacent each end thereof to the shifter rod, a housing in the intermediate portion of the link including an inwardly extending integral rim on one side thereof and an inwardly extending removable ring on the other side thereof, a sealed bearing unit carried within the housing and maintained therein by the rim and the ring, a bifurcated element having spaced aligned upstanding portions carried integral with the upper portion of the arm, a stub shaft having a pressed fit within the bearing passing through the upstanding portions at right angles thereto, an integral laterally projecting element formed on the stub shaft adjacent one end thereof, a seat within one of the upstanding portions of the arm receiving the projecting element fixing the stub shaft against rotation with respect to the upright arm, the other end of said stub shaft being mounted in the other upstanding portion of the arm, and means removably confining the stub shaft Within the upstanding portions of the arm, including a threaded portion on said stub shaft on the end thereof remote from said pin and a nut threaded thereon.
