RIFLE SLING Filed Aug. 9, 1963 Clair K Goss/er INVENTOR.
7 3,182,871 RIFLE SLING Clair K. Gossler, 388 Greenfield, Eugene, Oreg. Filed Aug. 9, 1963, Ser. No. 300,963 9 Claims. (Cl. 224-1) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rifle slings and has for its primary object to provide,
in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character which is quickly adjustable for use on various guns.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable sling of the aforementioned character which does not require swivel attachments on the rifle or holes therein for connecting the sling thereto.
A further object is to provide an improved sling of the character set forth which does not interfere with sighting the weapon and which, further, ma be readily removed therefrom if desired.
Still another highly important object of the present invention is to provide a rifle sling of the character described comprising novel loop means for receiving and securing the butt of the weapon.
United Stares Patent pad 16 resting on said shoulder.
Other objects are to provide an adjustable rifle sling which is comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, of light weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will'become subsequently apparentreside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view,.showing a sling embodying the present invention in use;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the lower portion of thedevice; and
FIGURE 3 is anelevational view of the lower portion of the device.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which hasbeen illustrated comprises a braided strap. of suitable flexible material which is designated generally by reference nu- 'meral 4. The strap 4 isfolded on itself at an intermediate point to provide generally parallel legs 6. Thus,
a loop 8 is provided at the joint-.of the legs 6. Thefconnected end portions of the strap legs 6 are wrapped or 3,182,871 Patented May 11,1965
'ice
free end portion 32. The stock ring 30 has formed therein a slit 34 through which one end portion of the butt loop or sling 22 is slidably adjustable.
It is thought that the use of the slingwill be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the noose 14 of the strap 4 is slipped on the rifle barrel 10 and drawn tight through the slip. loop 8. The ring 30 is then slipped on the rifle stock 20 and the butt 24 of said stock is engaged in the loop or sling 22. The loop 22 may be lengthened or shortened as desired by slipping same through the slit 34 in the ring 30, as will be apparout. The ring 30 is then drawn tight around the stock 20 by pulling on the knotted free end portion 32 of the respective strap leg, said ring sliding through the sleeve 26 on one end of the loop 22. The sling is then hungover the shoulder in the manner shown, the slidably adjustable It will be observed that the construction and arrangement is such that the complete device, with the exception of the shoulder pad 16, comprises a single length of suitable material such as parachute jump cord. It also will be noted that the ring 30 functions as a noose adapted to be drawn tightly around stocks of various sizes and shapes.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
:What is claimed as'new is as follows:
' ,l. A shoulder sling for a firearm including an upright barrel and a stock projecting downwardly below the lower end of said barrel, said sling including an upstanding 'elongated flexible member adaptedat its upper end for directed end portioncurving around to form a generally looped around the barrel 10 of a rifle 12, as indicated at 14, and slidably inserted through the loop 8 for adjustably and detachably connecting one end of the sling to said rifle barrel. a a
A shoulder pad 16 of suitable flexible material is mounted on the strap 4. The shoulder pad 16, in the embodiment shown, comprises a substantially flattened, flexible tube which is stitched along its longitudinal center to provide sleeves 18 through which the legs 6 of the strap 4 are slidable. 'It will accordingly be seen that the pad 16 is longitudinally adjustable on the strap 4. It also will be noted that the pad 16 is located adjacent the connected ends of the strap legs 6.
As shown to advantage in FIGURE 1 of the drawing,
1 the lower or free end portions of the. straplegs 6 are adapted to'receive thestock 20 of the rifle l2 therebetween. The free end portion of one of the strap legs horizontally disposed loop, said loop,'adjacent said one: leg, including a first guide means sildably engaging the free terminal end portion of said laterally directed end portion, said loop at a point generally diametrically opposite said one leg, also including second guide means slidably'engaging said other leg, said other leg depending below said second guide means and including an end portion defining a partial loop curving inwardly beneath said horizontal loop and upwardly toward and secured to the latter adjacent said first leg.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said first guide means includes means defining a generally horizontally disposed sleeve portion through which said free terminal end portion of said laterally directed end portion is frictionally and slidably received.
3. The combination of claim 1 wherein said second guide means includes means defining a generally upstnading sleeve portion through which the lower end of I saidother leg is frictionally and slidably received.
4. Thercombination of claim 3 wherein said first guide means include means defining a generally horizontally 6 is substantially folded on itself in a manner to provide a loop 22 for the reception of the butt 24 of the rifle 12,
, andterminates in a sleeve or tubular guide 26which is anchored as at 28 to the lower or free end portion of the other strap leg 6. I
From the connection 28,?the free end portionofthe other strap leg 6 is formedto provide a ring or loop 30 l .for the reception of thelower portion of therifie stock disposed sleeve portion through which said free terminal end portion'of said laterally directed end portion is frictionally and slidably received.
5. The combination of claim 4wherein each of said sleeve portions is integral with said horizontal loop.
. 6. The combination of claim 1 wherein said first guide meansrincludes means defining a generally horizontally disposed sleeve portion through which said free terminal end portion of said laterally directed end portion is frictionally and slidably received, the terminal end of said terminal end portion of said laterally directed end portion including an enlargement preventing said terminal end from being drawn through said horizontal sleeve portion,
7. A shoulder sling for a firearm including an upright barrel and a stock projecting downwardly below the lower end of said barrel, said sling including an upstanding elongated flexible member adapted at its upper end for securement to said barrel and defining, at least at the lower end portion thereof, a pair of flexible legs, the lower end of one of said legs terminating in a laterally directed end portion curving around to form a generally horizontally disposed loop, said loop, adjacent said one leg, including a first guide means slidably engaging the free terminal end portion of said laterally directed end portion, said loop at a point generally diametrically opposite said one leg, also including second guide means slidably engaging said other leg, said other leg depending below said second guide means and including an end portion defining a partial loop curving inwardly beneath said horizontal loop and upwardly toward and secured to the latter adjacent said first leg, said legs extending the full length of said flexible member and being interconnected at their upper ends by means of an integral bight portion forming an upper loop.
8, The combination of claim 7 including a shoulder pad on said flexible member adjacent the upper end thereof defining a flat flexible tube slidably disposed on said flexible member.
9. The combination of claim 8 wherein said legs extend the full length of said flexible member and are interconnected at their upper ends by means of an integral bight portion forming an upper loop, said tube defining 'a pair of parallel sleeves slidably and frictionally receiving the corresponding legs therethrough.
