WALL FIXTURE MOUNTING Driginal Filed May 18 1953 United States Patent O 3,180,595 WALL FIXTURE MOUNTING Ralph Brunsting, deceased, late of Kalamazoo, Mich., by Ralph 0. Birkhold, executor, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Clarence M. Cassclman, Kalamazoo, Mich., assignors to Ra-Ma Company, Inc., Kalamazoo, Mich., a corporation of Michigan Continuation of application Ser. No. 355,478, May 18,
1953. This application Mar. 29, 1962, Ser. No. 204,028 1 Claim. (Cl. 248-27) This application is a continuation of the now abandoned application by Clarence M. Casselman and Ralph Brunsting, Serial Number 355,478, filed May 18, 1953.
This invention relates to improvements in a wall fixture mounting.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a wall fixture mounting for toilet paper holders, handholds, and other bathroom fixtures, which greatly expedites the mounting of the fixtures and at the same time the fixture is securely mounted without marring the wall on which it is mounted.
Second, to provide a fixture mounting in which the securing means for the fixture is inconspicuous.
Third, to provide a fixture mounting having these advantages which is very economical in its parts and enables the mounting of fixtures by a relatively unskilled person.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claim.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a front elevational View of a toilet roll fixture embodying the invention in mounted position on a wall, the yWall being shown conventionally.
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary view in section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 in FIGS. 1 and 3, the attaching screws being shown in full lines.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary view in vertical section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the holder member or mounting bracket of the invention.
It is a matter of quite common observation that the mounting of fixtures such as toilet paper holders, handholds, glass holders and other bathroom fixtures requires the services of a skilled Workman and the expenditure of a very considerable amount of time and frequently the walls are objectionably marred, particularly where the vfixtures are mounted after the wall is finished or decorated. One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a structure which enables the mounting of fixtures by relatively unskilled persons and with relatively short expenditure of time without marring the wall. The embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawing enables the accomplishment of these objects.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents a chambered wall, 2 being the outer wall of the chamber and 3 the inner wall thereof. The space 4 is commonly present between the studding of walls. The fixture 5 illustrated is a toilet roll paper holder and is of generally dished or trough shape provided -with an outturned fiange 6 and with ears 7 provided with bearing openings `8 and 9 for a roll spindle. In mounting the fixture, an opening 10 is formed in the wall, the opening being of suitable dimensions to receive the fixture with the flange 6 thereof overlapping the face of the wall and in supported engagement therewith.
The holder member =11 is of general U-shape, the arms 1-2 of the holder member being provided with lateral extensions 13 which engage the inner side of the front wall portion 2 of the chambered Wall in opposition to the ange 6 of the fixture or portions thereof. The holder member 11 is formed of bar or strip metal stock and "ice desirably as a stamping. The holder member is provided with an inwardly projecting longitudinal rib 14. This rib reinforces the holderV member as well as forming an attaching element for the spring 20. The rib is provided with longitudinally spaced longitudinally extending slots 15.
In installing the fixture, the slots 15 are aligned with holes 16 in the fixture which rotatably receive the screws 17, the screws being of the socalled sheet metal type, that is they are threaded to engage an opening in a sheet metal part which is not correspondingly threaded. The rib 14 has longitudinal holes 18 therein through which the end coil 19 of the coil spring 20 is threaded', thus -mounting the coil on the holder. This spring 20 is of such length as to engage the inner or rear wall 3 of the chambered wall.
In installing fixtures embodying the invention, an opening 10 of suitable size is formed l in the wall. 'Ihe holder member or bracket 1;'1 is inserted through the opening and adjusted to position to bridge the opening with its ends in supported engagement with the inner side of the wall portion 2 and positioned to align the slots 15 thereof with the screw holes 16 in the` fixture. The spring 20 serves to hold the holder member in this position so that the screws 17 may be inserted in the opening .16 and engaged in the slots 15 and tightened to clamp the flange of the fixture against the outer side of the Wall and the holder member against the inner side. This may be Very quickly accomplished and the fixture is very securely mounted, the attaching means being concealed other than the heads of the screws with a fixture of the type illustrated.
We have only illustrated one type of fixture but it will be understood that other types of fixtures may be mounted in the same manner, providing the fixtures have flanges or other parts suppontedly engageable with the outer side of the Wall adjacent the opening formed therein. We will not attempt to illustrate or describe other structures or embodiments as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt the invention as may be desired.
What is claimed as new is:
The combination wvith a fixture having a dished portion adapted to be positioned in an opening in the fnont wall of a chambered wall and supportedly engageable with the outer side of the front wall and provided with spindle bearings at its ends, the fixture having longitudinally spaced screw receiving openings therein, a holder member insertable through the opening in the wall and engageable with the inner side of the wall in opposition to the portion of the fixture engageable with the outer side of the front wall, said holder member having a longitudinal reinforcing rib, the rib having longitudinally extending slots therein alignable with the said screw openings in said fixture and having spaced transverse holes therein, a coil spring having its front coil retainingly threaded into said holes in said rib and resting on the holder member on both sides of said rib, the spring projecting rearwardly from the holder member for engagement with the rear Wall of the chambered Wall for supporting the holder member in its adjusted position to facilitate the mounting of the fixture, and screws disposed in and rotatable in said screw openings in said fixture and having threaded engagement with said slots in said holder member.
