In a patent application titled Counter-Top Range Exhaust Apparatus, Serial No. 86,746, filed February 2, 1961, now Patent No. 3,102,533 granted September 3, 1963, by L. l. Jennand T. R. Field and assigned to the assignee of the present invention, there is disclosed and claimed a range top structure having a hinged cover which when opened extends upwardly from the rear margin of the range top. The cover is hollow and a slot along its upper margin forms an intake aperture through which fumes, smoke and odors arising from the burner units of the range top are drawn, the fumes and odors moving through the hollow cover and out a discharge conduit located below the range top. A blower unit suitably located in the system provides the required suction at the cover inlet slot.
The oven structure of the present invention is uniquely adapted to be selectively attached and detached from the fume and odor removal system of a structure such as that described generally above and, in detail, in the aforementioned patent application. The oven structure includes a bracket mounting to a vertical surface adjacent the range top. The rear wall components of the oven are arranged so that a fume and odor removal duct is formed along the rear wall of the oven the intake slot being located across the top of the interior face of the rear Wall of the oven. Fastened to the outer face of the bottom wall of the oven is an extensible, hinged duct structure which communicates with the odor removal duct within the oven. When extended, the hinged portion of the duct structure registers with and communicates with the intake slot on the range top cover mounted below and adjacent to the oven. With the range top fume and odor removal blower in operation the fume removal system of the oven is integrated into and activatcd by the range top blower. Fumes and odors are drawn from the interior of the oven, through the rear wall slot in the oven, through the hinged and extensible duct structure to the range top odor and fume removal system via the range top cover. The fume and odor removal systems for both the oven and the range top can thus be operated from a single air moving means or blower unit with both systems utilizing a single exhaust duct to the exterior of the dwelling or building housing the units, and this integration of the two fume and odor removal systems can take place although the oven is acquired and installed subsequent to acquisition of the range top. When the oven is not in use, or when its fume removal system is not needed, the extensible duct structure can be retracted into stowed position by the user, leaving the range odor and fume removal system fully operative.
An object of the present invention is to provide a domestic oven structure having convenient means for atcaching and detaching the ovens fume and odor removal system with the fume and odor removal system of an adjacent range top structure.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a rigid and simple means for mounting a domestic oven on a wall or other supporting vertical surface.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a domestic oven structure incorporating fume removal means which can be manually moved from astowed to an active position.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a domestic oven structure having venting means for limiting the temperature rise of the outer surfaces of certain of the wall portions of the oven.
These and other objects will become apparent as the description proceeds with reference to the accompanying rawings in which:

Referring initially to FIGS. 1 and 2, there is indicated generally at lit the structure of the counter top range ap paratus of the aforementioned patent application. As
shown in FIG. 1, this structure includes a plate 11 having an inset portion 12 carrying a series of heating units 13. The controls, indicated at 14, operate the heating elements located at the outer margin of the plate 12. Pivoted at the rear margin of the plate l2 is a hollow, generally rectangular cover structure 16 which is shown in raised position but which can be lowered so as to cover the burner elements 13. A fume and odor intake slot 17 is disposed across the upper marginal area of the structure 16 and with'the air moving means of the range top apparatus in operation, fumes and odors arising from the burner element area will be drawn into the slot and exhausted through the system as described in detail in the aforementioned patent application. The present invention is embodied in an oven structure which has no separate air moving means itself but which has a fume and odor removal system which can be integrated into the system of the range top just described.
The oven structure, in general, comprises an open fronted housing having a top wall 18, a base wall 19, a rear wall 21,. and side walls 22. An aurninum extrusion indicated at 26 in FIG. 1 closes the open, front end of the housing and provides a frame on which oven doors 23 and 24 are hinged.
As will be evident from FIGS. 2 and 6-the oven door 24' closes an auxiliary oven of reduced size indicated generally at 26 in FIGS. 2 and 6, with the controls for this smaller oven. and the oven structure 27 (closed by the door 23) being located in the area just below the oven door 24 and indicated at 28; The smaller, auxiliary oven 26 has no fume and odor removal system in the structure described and the larger, primary oven 27 which em- 33 bodies the fume and odor removal system of the present invention, will be described in detail herein with the auxiliary oven 26 treated merely as an appendage.
Referring primarily to FIGS. 3, 4, and 6, the oven structure 27 is bounded by a top wall structure 31, a base wall structure 32, a rear wall structure (FIG. 3) and side wall structures 33 and 34 (FIG. 6).
As will be evident from FIG. 1 the base wall 32 of the oven 27 forms a portion of the complete base surface 19 which also extends under the control housing just beneath the auxiliary oven 26.
As will be evident from FIGS. 3, 4, and 6, the side wall structure 33 and the side wall structure 34 are comprised of two spaced parallel plates 33a and 33b which form the side wall structure 33 and plates 34a and 34b which form the side wall structure 34. Similarly, the base wall structure 32 is comprised of spaced parallel plates 32a and 3211. As will be noted in FIG. 6, particularly, the plate 32a, forming the outer face of the base wall structure 32 is provided with an aperture 37 extending across the base wall. The upper wall structure 31 is composed of spaced parallel plates 31a, and 31b and the rear wall structure 35 is composed of spaced parallel plates 35a and 35b. It will be understood that, as is conventional, the space between the parallel plates making up the various wall structures may be filled with a suitable thermal insulating material to limit the temperature rise of the outer faces of the walls when the oven is in operation.
As will be evident from FIG. 3, the outer plate 33a of the side wall structure 33 extends upwardly beyond the plane of the outer, top wall plate 31a and the marginal upper edge of the plate 33a is flanged sidewardly toward the center of the oven as indicated at 330 in FIG. 3. The outer plate 31a forming a portion of the top wall structure 31 has its marginal area 310 flanged upwardly and joined to the flanged portion 330 of the plate 33a. The upwardly extending, flanged portion 31c of the plate 31a is provided with a series of closely spaced apertures 38 across the width of the plate 31a and these serve as venting apertures for the space between the spaced parallel plates 33a and 33b making up the side wall structure 33. These sidewardly directed vents permit a convection current to exist within the spaced walls making up the wall structure and aids the thermal insulating material in maintaining the outer faces of the wall at a limited tem perature rise when the oven is in operation. While only the apertures 38 are shown adjacent the side wall construction 33, it will be understood that the plate 31a is similarly flanged at its opposite end and similar venting apertures are formed adjacent the upper margin of the outer plate 34a forming a portion of the side wall structure 34.
Enclosing the outer margins of the side walls, base and top wall is a door frame assembly indicated generally at 39, the extrusion 20, previously mentioned with reference to FIG. 1, being a part of this assembly. Mounted on suitable hinges or pivots within the frame assembly 39 is the oven door structure 23 and this structure includes spaced parallel panes of glass 23a and 23b which are held in assembled relation by the door assembly members indicated generally at 41 in FIG. 3. The frame assembly 39 and the door assembly 41 are not described in detail herein and these do not form a part of the invention presently disclosed and claimed. As may be seen in FIGS. 3 and 4, the inner plates 33b, and 34b carry the U-shaped rods 42 which extend slightly into the oven area and receive racks (not shown) which extend between the sides of the oven and provide adjustable support for objects placed in the oven. Extending inwardly from the side wall plates 33b and 34b are pins 48 which accommodate the rearwardly extending flanges 49 on a baflle plate 51. The flanges 49 are slotted as indicated at 52 in FIG. 3 and 54 in FIG. 4, permitting the bafile plate 51 to be lifted upwardly and outwardly in removing it from the oven. As will be evident from FIG. 3, the bafile plate 51 is curved outwardly at its upper margin and while the bafiie plate is generally coextensive with the rear wall plate 35b, it terminates short of the upper margin of the plate 35b and thus provides an intake slot indicated at 56 in FIG. 3.
As may be seen in FIG. 4, the lowermost of the rack supports 42 carries a rack 61 to which is attached by means of brackets 21 sheathed electrical heating element 63. The element 63 terminates in a connecting plug 64 which cooperates with an electrical receptacle 66. The lower end of the baffle plate 51 is curved towards the front of the oven and rests against the adjacent plate 32b. It will be noted that the bafile plate extends adjacent o the aperture 37, previously referred to with reference to FIG. 6.
Referring primarily to FIG. 4, the auxiliary fume and odor removal structure which includes an extensible and retractable conduit will now be described. Rigidly secured to the outer plate 32a of the base wall structure 32 is an enclosure 71 which extends completely across the plate 32a and is provided with closed ends and rear face. The enclosure 71 is open at its front end which is defined by the turned back lip 72. The top wall of the enclosure is formed by the plate 32a and the interior of the enclosure communicates with the space 73, existing between the baflle plate 51 and the oven rear wall component plate 35b.
Nested within the enclosure 71 is an extensible duct which is comprised of a front portion 74 and a rear portion 76. The outer, lower corners of the portion 76 are provided with inwardly extending pins 77 which are received in suitably sized apertures in the end plates 78 0f the front portion 74. The pins 77 thus serve as pintles permitting the front portion 74 of the duct to pivot or depend with relation to the rear portion 76. The end plates 78 are fastened to the plate 79, forming the body of the duct portion 74, by means of screws 81 which extend through the end plates and into channels 82 extending the width of the plate 79. The outer end of the plate 79 is provided with a finger grip member 83. Extending across the portion 74 is a plate 84, having flanged extremities 86 which are rigidly secured to the inner faces of the end plates 78. The plate 84 terminates at the rearwardly turned lip 87 so that the area indicated at 88 in FIG. 4 is open. The area 88 of the duct portion 74 is shown in register with and closely adjacent to the intake slot 17 of the cover 16 for the range heating units 13. As previously mentioned, and as described in detail in the aforementioned patent application, the intake slot 17 draws fumes down through the cover 16 when the air moving means of the fume and odor removal system of the counter-top range unit is in operation.
As may best be seen in FIG. 6, the plate 32a forming the outer face of the base wall structure 32 is provided with a guide slot 91 over which is mounted a member 92, channel shaped in cross section. The sides of the channel shaped member 92 form a track for rollers 93 and 94 which are mounted upon a bar 96. The bar 96 is rigidly secured to the upper wall 76a of the duct portion 76 by means of rivets 97. It will be evident that the extension of the bar 96 and the rollers 93 into the slot and into engagement with the sides of the member 92 provide a means for guiding the duct portion 76 as it is withdrawn from the enclosure 71, engagement of the roller 93 with the abutment formed by the door frame serving as a stop defining the limit of extension of the duct from the enclosure 71.
Referring now to FIGS. 3 and 5, the means for mounting the oven structure on a wall or other vertical support ing surface will now be described. As indicated in FIG. 5, this means includes a bracket formed by a member 101, which is generally L-shaped in cross section and is apertured to receive screws or other fasteners rigidly mounting it to the supporting surface. As may be seen in B2 j FIG. 3, the outwardly extending portion fella forms a slightly obtuse angle with the vertical portion of the member fill. Welded or otherwise rigidly secured to each end of the member fill are outwardly extending arms N2 and each of the arms carries at its tip an L- shaped bracket M3 which is secured to the inner face of the members N2, the upper end portion of the brackets M3 being bent outwardly and apertured as indicated at 103:: in FIG. 3. Slots, accommodating the members 102, are formed at the junction of the rear wall outer plate 35a and the side wall outer plates 33a and 34a to receive the members 102 as indicated in FIG. 3. The members 102 extend substantially to the front of the oven housing between the outer and inner plates forming the side wall structures of the oven housing and are rigidly secured to the oven by means of screws 1% which extend through the apertures in the portions 163a of the brackets 1633. The oven housing is thus rigidly suspended from the wall or other supporting surface backing the member tar and can be removed therefrom by withdrawing the screws 1% and sliding the oven structure off of the members W2.
As will be evident from a comparison of FIGS. 2 and 4, when the duct 7 'i,'7d is in stowed position and completely nested within the enclosure '73., this apparatus offers no obstruction to cooking activity occurring on the counter top range units located just below the oven. When the oven is in use, and the fume and odor removal system is to be operated, the finger grip member 83 on the extensible duct portion 74 is drawn outwardly sliding the duct 74476 from the enclosure 71 to its position of FlG. 4. Assuming that the counter top range unit cover 16 has been placed in raised position and that the air moving means is in operation, the open space 88 in the duct portion 7 will register with and transmit fumes and odors from the oven to the range cover intake slot 1'7.
As shown schematically in FIG. 7, with the air moving means flu in operation, fumes and odors from the interior of the oven housing 27 will be drawn through the slot 56, through the space existing between the bafile plate 51 and the plate 3511, into the enclosure 71, through the duct portions '76 and 74 and through the intake slot 17 of the range unit cover 16 to be exhausted to the exterior of the dwelling or building in which the units are mounted by means of the discharge duct ill. The fume and odor removal system for the range unit may thus be utilized in withdrawing fumes from the interior of the oven structure and, when the oven is not being operated, the inter-connecting, extensible duct i l-7d may be retracted into the enclosure 71 so that it does not obstruct operations necessary for utilization of the counter top range unit.
While the invention has been disclosed and described in some detail in the drawings and foregoing description, they are to be considered as illustrative and not restrictive in character, as other modifications may readily suggest themselves to persons skilled in this art and within the broad scope of the invention, reference being had to the appended claims.
The invention claimed is:
1. A domestic oven structure comprising an open fronted housing having a top wall, base wall, rear wall and side walls, an oven door mounted to extend across and close the open front of said housing, said side Walls being formed by spaced parallel plates having thermal insulating material disposed therebetween, a bafile plate removably mounted within said oven in parallel spaced relation to the inner face of said rear wall, said baflle plate bein. generally coextensive with said rear wall inner face but terminating short of the upper margin thereof to provide an intake slot communicating with the space between said bafrle plate and rear wall inner face, an aperture extending across said base wall'registering with the space between said baffle plate and rear wall inner face, suchclosure mounted on the outer face of said base wall communicating with said aperture and generally coextensive with said base wall but terminating substantially short of the front margin thereof, an extensible duct nested within said enclosure having a front portion hinged to the remaining portion of said duct, means for mounting said duct within said enclosure to permit extension thereof from the front margin of the enclosure, said front portion of said duct being free to assume a depending position when extended, the marginal aperture at the free end of said extensible portion of said duct when extended being adapted to register with the intake aperture of an air moving means, said extensible duct overlying and closing said base wall aperture when retracted into said enclosure.
2. An oven structure as claimed in claim 1 in which the outer ones of said spaced plates forming said housing side walls extend upwardly beyond the plane of said housing top wall, with the adjacent marginal areas of said top wall being flanged upwardly and joined to the margins of said outer plates, the flanged marginal areas of said top Wall having apertures therein providing sidewardly directed vents for the space between the adjacent pairs of plates forming said housing side walls.
3. An oven structure as claimed in claim 1 in which the mounting means for said extensible duct comprises rollers spaced in the direction of extension of said duct and mounted on the top of said remaining portion of said duct, an elongated slot in the outer face of said base wall receiving said rollers, means carried by said base wall along the length of said elongated slot adapted to be engaged by said rollers, and an abutment at the front end of saidslot which when engaged by the adjacent roller serves as a stop defining the limit of extension of said extensible duct from said enclosure.
4. A domestic oven structure comprising an open fronted housing, a top wall, base wall, rear wall and side walls, an oven door mounted to extend across and close the open front of said housing, a bafile plate removably mounted within said oven in parallel spaced relation to the inner face of said rear wall, said baffle plate being generally coextensive with said rear wall inner face but terminating short of the upper margin thereof to provide an intake slot communicating with the space between said baffle plate and rear wall inner face, an aperture extending across said base wall registering with the space between said baffle plate and rear wall inner face, an enclosure mounted on the outer face of said base wall communicating with said aperture, an extensible duct nested within said enclosure having a front portion hinged to the remaining portion of said duct, means for mounting said duct within said enclosure to permit extension thereof from the front margin of the enclosure, said front portion of said duct being free to assume a depending position when extended, the marginal aperture at the free end of said extensible portion of said duct when extended being adapted to register with the intake aperture of an air moving means, said extensible duct overlying and closing said base wall aperture when retracted into said enclosure.
5. An oven structure as claimed in claim 4 in which the mounting means for said extensible duct comprises rollers spaced in the direction of extension of said duct and mounted on the top of said remaining portion of said duct, an elongated slot in the outer face of said base wall receiving said rollers, means carried by said base wall along the length of said elongated slot adapted to be engaged by said rollers, and an abutment at the front end of said slot which when engaged by the adjacent roller serves as a stop defining the limit of extension of said extensible duct from said enclosure.
6. A domestic oven structure comprising an open 7. being generally coextensive with said rear wall inner face and providing an intake slot communicating with the space between said bafiie plate and rear wall inner face, an aperture extending across said base wall registering with the space between said bafile plate and rear wall inner face, an enclosure mounted on the outer face of said base wall communicating with said aperture, an extensible duct nested within said enclosure having a front portion de flectable with relation to the remaining portion of said duct, means for mounting said duct within said enclosure to permit extension thereof from the front margin of the enclosure, the marginal aperture at the free end of said extensible portion of said duct when extended being adapted to register with the intake aperture of an air moving means, said extensible duct overlying and closing said base Wall aperture when retracted into said enclosure.
7. An oven structure as claimed in claim 6 in which the mounting means for said extensible duct comprises elements spaced in the direction of extension of said duct and mounted on the top of said remaining portion of said duct, an elongated slot in the outer face of said base wall receiving said elements, means carried by said base wall along the length of said elongated slot adapted to be engaged by said elements, and an abutment at the front end of said slot which when engaged by the adjacent element serves as a stop defining the limit of extension of said extensible duct from said enclosure.
8. A domestic oven structure comprising an open fronted housing having a top wall, base wall, rear wall and side walls, an oven door mounted to extend across and close the open front of said housing, an aperture in said housing communicating with the interior of the oven, an enclosure mounted on the outer face of said housing communicating with said aperture, an extensible duct nested within said enclosure having a front portion defiectable with relation to the remaining portion of said duct, means for mounting said duct within said enclosure E5 to permit extension thereof from the front margin of the enclosure, the marginal aperture at the free end of said extensible portion of said duct when extended being adapted to register with the intake aperture of an air moving means.
9. An oven structure as claimed in claim 8 in which the mounting means for said extensible duct comprises elements mounted on the top of said remaining portion of said duct, an elongated slot in the outer face of said housing wall receiving said elements, and means carried by said housing wall along the length of said elongated slot adapted to be engaged by said elements.
10. A domestic oven structure comprising an open fronted housing having a top wall, base wall, rear wall, and side walls, an oven door mounted to extend across and close the open front of said housing, a bathe plate removably mounted within said oven in parallel spaced relation to the inner face of said rear wall, said bafiie plate being generally coextensive with said rear wall inner face and providing an intake slot communicating with the space between said bafile plate and rear wall inner face, an aperture in said base wall registering with the space between said baffle plate and rear wall inner face, an enclosure mounted on the outer face of said base wall communicating with said aperture, an extensible duct nested within said enclosure having a front portion deflectable with relation to the remaining portion of said duct, means for mounting said duct within said enclosure to permit extension thereof from the enclosure.

Claims (1)

  1. 8. A DOMESTIC OVEN STRUCTURE COMPRISING AN OPEN FRONTED HOUSING HAVING A TOP WALL, BASE WALL, REAR WALL AND SIDE WALLS, AN OVEN DOOR MOUNTED TO EXTEND ACROSS AND CLOSE THE OPEN FRONT OF SAID HOUSING, AN APERTURE IN SAID HOUSING COMMUNICATING WITH THE INTERIOR OF THE OVEN, AN ENCLOSE MOUNTED ON THE OUTER FACE OF SAID HOUSING COMMUNICATING WITH SAID APERTURE, AN EXTENSIBLE DUCT NESTED WITHIN SAID CLOSURE HAVING A FRONT PORTION DEFLECTABLE WITH RELATION TO THE REMAINING PORTION OF SAID DUCTS, MEANS FOR MOUNTING SAID DUCT WITHIN SAID ENCLOSURE TO PERMIT EXTENSION THEREOF FROM THE FRONT MARGIN OF THE ENCLOSURE, THE MARGINAL APERTURE AT THE FREE END OF SAID EXTENSIBLE PORTION OF SAID DUCT WHEN EXTENDED BEING ADAPTED TO REGISTER WITH THE INTAKE APERTURE OF AN AIR MOVING MEANS.
