HENRIETTA H. DAINGERFIELD,
PATENT irren.'
OF HABRISONBUBG, VIRGINIA.
ADJUSTABLE AND REVERSIBLE FOOT-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,978, dated May 19, 1885.
Application tiled March 2, 1895. (Model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRIETTA H. DAIN- GERFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisonburg, in the county of Bockingham and Sta-te of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Adjustable and Reversible Foot-Best, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an adjustable and reversible foot-rest to be applied to seats in railroad-cars, churches, schools, theaters, &c., it being capable of adaptation to the wants of all, regardless of size-as, for instance, it is a wellknown fact that, as at present constructed in railway-cars, the rigid foot-rest provided is suitable to the wants and convenience of but a small portion of the traveling community, and its adaptation is for those really needing its convenience t-he least, being so far removed from the seat as to preclude the possibility of affording a rest for persons of small stature of adult years, and useless as regards children, while by my invention the foot-rest can be adj usted to the convenience of the user at will, requiring in its manipulation no mechanical skill. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view ot' the footrest attached to a reversible carseat; Fig. 2, a detail view of one of the side plates; Fig. 3, a detail View, in perspective, of one of the tilting bars.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
I have shown my invention as attached to a carseat, and shall confine my description to the same, it being understood that the device is equally well adapted to any use where the comfort of a foot-rest is desired.
A A designate the vertical standards of the car-seat; B, the reversible back; G, the seat, a well-known construction in car-seats.
To the base of t-he vstandards A A are attached side pieces, C, being notched at two or more places in such :manner as to form steps or rests for the foot-rest I), which is shown as extending the entire length of the seat, but as is evident may be composed of two or more lengths, as desired, by the use of intermediate pieces, secured to the bottom of the car so as to adapt it to be varied in height within the length of the seat to suit the convenience of the several occupants. rllhe rest D is pivoted upon a horizontal bar, E, (shown as running the entire length ofthe seat.) This pivotal connection, however, may be made by the D when resting on the lower step or rest of side plate, C, (which may be done with the foot,) and sliding the tilting bar F on bar E to adj ust the rest one or more notches higher, as desired, this manipulation being reversed in lowering the rest. The rest can be readily reversed by raising it to a vertical position,
when bars F will be caused to slide on bar E to the limit of the elongated slot, thus permitting it to be easily swung to the opposite side. This feature is especially designed for convenience in reversible car-seats, this pivotal connection, however, serving another and very useful purpose, as when it is desired to clean the lioor ot' a car, theater, school-room, or parlor it is only necessary to swing the rest to a vertical position, thus allowing free access below the seat.
As shown, the tilting bars are bent at right angles at their connection with the foot-rest, but they may be of any conformation desired.
It will be seen that the device is simple and consequently cheap of construction, and not liable to get out ot' repair.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In c combination with a seat, an adjustable and reversible foot-rest, for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with a seat, a .reversible foot-rest adapted to be moved in a radial line with relation to its pivot, in combination with steps or rests, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with a seat provided with steps at its base, a pivoted foot-rest adjustable as to its height, substantially as set forth.
4C. In combination with aseat, the standards A, seat B, side pieces, G, having steps, footrest D, bar or pivot E, tilting bars F, having elongated slots f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Witnesses: HENRIETTA H. DAINGERFIELD.
