SAFETY-VALVE AND ALARM FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,952, dated May 12, 1885.

To ctZZ'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM B. RAILING and CHARLES N. MAY, both of Mechanicsburg, 1n the county ofOumberland and State ofPennsylvauia, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Valve and Alarm for SteainBoilers, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
It is well known that safety-valves frequently stick and remain closed until the pressure in the boiler rises much higher than the point at which the valve is set, so that there is risk of explosion.
The object of our invention is to cause an alarm in case the safety-valve fails to open by the use of a pressuredetector in conjunction with an ordinary safety-valve, so constructed as to insure the invariable opening of the valve when the pressure reaches a given point.
To that end we combine a pressurediaphragm and lever with a valve in such a manher that the valve is not closed or affected by the spring or weight of the lever, but is quickly opened when the lever is raised by the steam-pressure, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which our improved device is shown by a sectional elevation.
A hollow case, A, forming a steam-chamber, is connected to a coupling, a, to which is also connected the steam-pipe B, by which the device is attached to the boiler, and to coupling a is also connected a pipe, 0, that passes to a valvechamber, D. The' chamber D is sustained by a slotted post, b, through which passes the lever E, that is hung upon chamber A, and to the outer end of lever E is pivoted a rod or stem, (Z, that extends upward loosely through sleeve'nut c, that is screwed through the end of an arm, f, projecting from post b.
On stem (Z is a fast collar, 9, forming a seat for a spiral spring, h, and above the spring is a loose washer, t, that bears against the lower end of sleeve-nut 6, so that by screwing the nut up and down the tension of the spring and its pressure on lever E is regulated. There is a lock-nut on sleeve 6, for looking it in place after the spring is set for the desired pressure. Across the steam-chamber A is secured a thin metallic diaphragm, k, and upon the diaphragm rests a plunger, Z, that extends through the upper side of the chamber or case into contact with lever E at a point near its fulcrum. The valve-chamber D has a seat, m, for the disk-valve n, whose stem extends upward into a guide-mortise, and the stem is fluted, so as to reduce the friction. When used on a boilerthat is provided with an ordinary safety-valve, theleverEis to be set by adjustment of the spring at the same pressure as the safety-valve. In case the latter fails to open when the pressure at which it is set is reached, the steam acting against diaphragm 7c raiseslever E, thereby pushing pin 0 and valve 12 upward and admitting steam to the whistle. The device used as described constitutes a sure detector in case the safety-valve fails to work.
By a suitable arrangement of the outlet the device may be used as a safety-valve.
There may be a weight used on lever E in place ofthe spring shown.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-

The safety-valve and alarm consisting of the steam-chamber A, having an opening in its upper surface, the diaphragm 7c in said chamber, the plunger Z, projecting loosely through the aperture of the chamber, and having its base resting on the said diaphragm, the lever E, the pin 0, valve-chamber D, and valve a, substantially as herein shown and described.
