REGULATOR-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,232, dated January 22, 1884,

To a/ZZ whom. it may concern.:
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY J KIELEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Regulator-Valves, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My automatic regulator-valve is designed to maintain a constant pressure in a steam-heating system,or in other` pipes, whatever be the pressure in the boiler or generator.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l represents a section; Fig. 2, a view of the manner of connecting my regulator-weight with the regulator-valve rod.
The steam enters by the pipe A and leaves by the pipe B. A double valve, C D, is shown mounted upon a stem, E. The lower end of this stem issupported by the cap F. The upper end of the stem is fast to the diaphragm G, and rests upon it by the cap H. To this cap is attached the stem K, which bears against the lever L, upon the end of which is mounted the adjustable weight W'. A friction-roller, M, is provided, as shown in Fig. 2, to prevent friction between'the stem K and the lever L. By setting the weight W the pressure existing in the pipe B can be exactly determined. The valve D is made a little larger than the valve C, so that the valve may be readily put in position by insertion from below when the cap F is removed. This is not' in all cases essential. The pressure of the steam acting upon the lower surface of the diaphragm G raises the sameand closes the double valve G D. As soon as the pressure in B has become reduced the weight W again opens the valve.
The anti-friction roller M, in combinationwith the valve-lever, performs an important part in this apparatus, preventing the binding between the rod and lever, which would other-v wise be very likely to occur.
I am aware that automatic regulatonvalves are not new, and I do not claim them, broadly; but I am not aware that a 'regulator-valve embodying the 'above construction *has been known or used prior to my invention.
y What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a regulator-valve, of the diaphragm G, provided with a continuous pressure-plate upon its upper surface, the said plate being connected with a weighted lever by the anti-frictionsrollerjournal M, the valves C and D, the valve D and its valve-seat being greater in diameter than the valve C, the cap F,serving as a guide for the lower end of the stem E, and itself being greater in diameter than either the valve C or D, and the spiderguide located between the valve C and the diaphragm G, thereby insuring the accurate seating of the valves and preventing the lateral movement of the diaphragm, substantially as described.
