INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO ELI LILLY 85 SAME PLACE.
JAR FOR SOLID EXTRACTS.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,950, dated M'ay 12, 1885.
Application filed February 7, 1885.
To all whom it maly concern:
Be it known that I, J osIAH K. LILLY, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, andV State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jars for Solid Extracts, dtc., of which the following is a specification. j k
As is well known to druggists, pharmacists, and others familiar With the use of solid extracts and like substances in compounding medicines, the removal of said substances from the jars in which they are put up for said use is usually accomplished by the use of a spatula or knife, which it frequently becomes necessary to scrape to remove the portion of the substance adhering thereto after its use is completed, or to clean beforeit is used in some Substance of a difierent kind. This is usually done upon the edge of the jar, and as a consequence said edge becomes covered with said substance, portions of which get upon the outside of said jar, and thus give it a filthy apa pearance and make it disagreeable to handle, as well as wastes quite a considerable amount of the contents, which thus becomes unfit for use. Said edge being curved, it is also difficult to efficiently clean said spatula thereon without holding it down in a position at right angles with the side of the jar in an unnatural and inconvenient manner.
The object of my said invention is, therefore, to produce an improved construction of jars foruse in putting up solid extracts,77 ointments, pomades, &c., by the use of Which the necessity of using the edge of the jar to clean the spatula or knife upon is obviated, and the above disadvantages thus overcome. This object is accomplished by providing a straight overhanging edge across one side of the top of said jar, upon Which said spatula, knife, or similar tool can be cleaned, and that portion of the substance thus removed therefrom be thereby deposited directly into the jar, as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a jar embodying my said invention illustrating its (No model.)
use; Fig. 2, a top or plan view of the jar, the cover being removed; Fig. 3, a central vertical section through the same on the dotted line z z, with the cover in place; and Fig. 4, a similar view showing an alternate` construction of my improvement, which may be used, if preferred.
In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the main part of the jar, A' the scraper thereof, and A2 the cover. "The jar A is in all particulars any ordinary jar used for or suitable vfor this purpose, except that it is provided with the scraper A', which constitutes my invention. The scraper A' is preferably formed across one side of the top of the jar in piece with the side of said jar, as shown in the principal figure of the drawings. It eX- tends in toward the center of the jar a suffi-` cient distance to make the front edge thereof, which is formed straight, of a length convenient to form an efficient and handy scraper, and to afford sufficient space under said scraper to receive whatever is removed from the spatula. The under side of the scraper eX- tends back from the front edge thereof to the side of the jar proper at an angle, thus affording an inclined surface to conduct thesubstance removed from the spatula down into the jar, and also render said under side easy to. clean when the Substance is of such a sticky nature as to adhere thereto.
The use of my invention will be readily understood from the following brief description: It being desired to use any portion of the contents of one of the jars, it is taken out in the well-known manner and the quantity desired used. It being then desired to remove the portion left upon the spatula, or to clean it, it is scraped upon the edge of my improvement, which cleans.` said spatula and retains the surplus material on its under side, where it soon slides down the inclined surface of said under side into the jar, and is thus prevented from getting upon the outside of said jar and Wasting, and said outside is also thus kept neat and clean at all times.
In Fig. 4 the scraper is shown made of a separate piece and glued in position. This may be desirablc for jars already constructed.
I have shown the scraper as located at the extreme top of the jar, as I regard this construction as preferable; but, as will be readily seen, it might bc located a short distance from' said top Without departing from niy inyention.
I am aware that Vessels of different kinds 1 have been provided with scrapers across their tops, and that the edges of some straight-sided Vessels have been so formed as to be adapted for the purpose; but I ain not aware that any circularjar of the kind shown and described, nor one adapted for the same use, has ever been provided with a seraper; nor ani I aware that any scraper of the construction shown has ever been made.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a jar for solid ex- 2o tracts, Stc., of a seraper secured at one side of the top thereof, said scraper being formed to fit the curved inner surface of the jar, With a straight inner edge, and an inclined under side extending from said inner edge back to the side of the jar, substantially as described, and
for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of the circular jar A and the scraper A' at the inner edge of the top of said jar, its front edge being formed straight, and its under side being inclined back from said front edge to the side of the jar, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
3. A scraper for jars for solid eXtracts, &c., formed to fit against the concave interior surface of said jar, the front edge of said scraper being formed straight, and the under side being formed inclined from said front edge back to the side of the jar, whereby said scraper is adapted to conduct the material left upon its edge down into the jar, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 3d day of February, A. D. 1885.
