FIRE- ESCAPE.

SPECIFICATION forming par* of Letters Patent No. 317,862, dated May 12, 1885.

Be it known that we, CONRAD SCHEADEE and FRIEDRICH W. KITTLER, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes; and we do herebyT declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

Our invention relates to lire-escapes, and will be fully described hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an isometric perspective view of our device when closed. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the lower platform of our device; and Fig. 3 is an isometric perspective View of our device partly extended; and Figs. 4 and 5 are details.

A is the lower platform, which is mounted on trucks or wheels.

C are lazy-tongs elevators, the lower legs of which are hinged to blocks c, that slide in ways c' in each end of the truck or lower platform, and the two blocks c at each end are connected on their under side by cables or chains d that cross each other and pass around sheaves each to a drum, D, on a shaft, D', the outer ends of which latter are provided with cranks d' and ratchets dZ and pawls d3, as shown in Fig. 2.

B are the side lazy-tongs, the lower members of which are hinged to bars b, that slide in ways similar to those occupied by the blocks c, and have ratchet-teeth a on their under side to engage with cog-wheels b' on shafts D', and thus the lower members of the four lazy-tongs are connected so that they may be drawn together by means of the shafts D', and of course as this is done the entire structure will be eX- tended. The lower sills ofthe upper platform, F, are grooved as at ff', as shown, and the roof of groovef is ribbed, as at g, to receive a sheave, G, in the bifureated upper end, G', of each of the upper members ofthe lazy-tongs, while the ends of the axles upon which the sheaves G turn project into the grooves f Suitable braces, H, connect the four lazytongs and bind the structure together.

The platform F has a railing, F', about it, and this railing is provided at proper points with gates K, which are hinged at the bottom, and when dropped serve as a staging or bridge between the burning building and the platform.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a ire-escape, the combination of the sliding bars b and blocks c with the lazy-tongs, lower platform, shafts D', cog-wheels b', and connections d, as set forth.

In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wiscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
