DANIEL J. GILOHRIST, OF NEWARK, NEWV JERSEY.
EARTH AND COAL LOADER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,761, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed March 17, 1885.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. GILGHRIST, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Earth and Coal Loader, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved apparatus for elevating and loading coal, earth, sand, 850.
The invention consists in the combination, with swinging and sliding bars,of a scoop held to the same, of ropes or pulleys for moving the scoop in the direction of the length of the bars and into a heap of coal or earth, and of ropes and pulleys for raising the scoop, all as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved earth and coal loader. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation through the chute.
The scoop A has its back B hinged to the bottom 0, to swing outward and downward; and on its upper or swinging edge hooks D are secured, which are adapted to catch on an angular springcateh, D, secured on the top A of the scoop. The scoop has its sides secured to the ends of two bars, E, having longitudinal slots E in their opposite ends, through which bolts or pivots F are passed, which are also passed through apertures G in uprights G, secured on base-bars H, thus adapting the scoop to swing and to slide in the direction of the length of the bars E. The bars E also pass alongside the uprights J, near the upper ends of which a cross-piece, K, is secured to the same, on which the upper end of a slide or chute, L, rests, the lower end of the same resting on a cross-piece on the uprights G. A shaft, L, driven by engines M, is journaled on the base-bars H, and by means of suitable gearing and friction-wheels revolves the"shafts N or O, journaled in the base parallel with the shaft L. Rope-drums P are mounted on the shaft N, and-drums Q on the shaft 0. Ropes or chains R are secured to (No model.)
the drums P, pass over pulleys T on the upper ends of standards or uprights J, and are secured to the scoop. Ropes or chains S are secured on the drum Q and to the ends of the bars E. As the uprights G have a series of apertures, G, the bars E can be pivoted higher or lower.
Suitable clutch devices are provided to couple the shaft L with the shaft N or O.
The operation is as follows: WVhen the scoop is in the lowered position, (shown in Fig. 1,) the shaft L is engaged with the shaft 0, and the ropes or chains S are wound on the drums Q, whereby the scoop A is moved in the direction of the arrow at and into the heap of earth, coals, 8m, and thus the scoop is filled. Then the shaft L is disengaged from the shaft 0 and engaged with the shaft N, whereby the chains R are. wound on the drums P, and the filled scoop is raised. Then the upwardly-projecting part E of the catch D strikes the crosspiece It, uniting the uprights, the hooks D are disengaged, and the weight of the load swings the gate B or back of the scoop upon the upper end of the chute L, and the contents of the scoop slide over the lowered gate and down the chute. The scoop is then lowered and filled again, and so on.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with pivoted and sliding bars, of a scoop secured to the swinging ends of the same, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with pivoted and sliding bars, of a scoop secured to the same, ropes and pulleys for raising the scoop, and of ropes andpulleys for moving the scoop in the direction of the length of the bars, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the uprights J, of the chute L, the bars E, which can slide and swing, and the scoop L, secured to the said bars E, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with the uprights J, of the chute L, the pulleys T on the same, the slotted bars E, the scoop A on the same, and the ropes or chains R, passed over the pulleys T and secured to the scoop, substantially asof the swinging and sliding bars E, the scoop 1o herein shown and described. A, the hinged gate B on the same, and spring- 5. The combination, with the uprights J, catches for keeping the gate closed, substanof the chute L, the slotted bars E, the scoop tially as herein shown and described. 5 A, the shafts N and O, oarr 'in drums, the T driving-shaft L, the ropes or ch ins R and S, DAL IEL GILCHRIST' and the pulleys T, substantially as herein Witnesses: shown and described. OSCAR F. GUNZ, 6. The combination, with the uprights J, O. SEDGWIOK.
