DIVIDED CASTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 317,695, dated May 12, 1885. I Application filed March 25, 1885. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES YOOOM, Jr.,- a citizen of the United States, residing at Phil adelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Divided Oastiu gs, of which invention the following is a specification.
This invention consists of an improvement in the inventions for which Letters Patent, Nos. 116,134, 180,304, and 279,069 were issued to me under dates of June 20, 1871, July 25, 1876, and June 5, 1883, respectively. Its object is to facilitate the drawing together of the sections of the casting, whether shaft-couplin g, pulley-hub, collar, or other structure, when fitting the same on a shaft; and it consists in the combination of a divided casting made in 'two or more sections, a series of interlocking hinge-pieces united to said sections in the operation of casting the same, and one or more forcing screws or pins, of tapering form, such screws or pins taking the place of the cylindrical hinge-pins shown in the several patents aforesaid.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a shaft-coupling embodying said invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the coupling (on the line x m, Fig. 1) through the middle of the hubs of the hinge-pieces, showing at one endthe tapering screw and at the other the tapering pin in position in elevation Fig. 3, elevations of the tapering screw and tapering pin.
The shaft-coupling shown in Fig. 1 consists of three sections, a b 0, applied to shafts f. In the operation of casting these sections there are embedded in them hinge-pieces, each of which consists of a cylindrical hub or boss, d, Fig. 2, and a tongue or arm (not shown) projecting therefrom.
is a tapered screw, and c a tapered pin,
either of which may be used for securing the sections of the casting on the shaft.
The character and mode of operation of the hinge-pieces being fully set forth in the patents above referred to, it is unnecessary to further describe them here.
The tapering form of the screws or pins 6 e renders them more efficient in the work of applying the sections of the casting to the shafts.
The drawings represent hinge-pieces of the form shown and described in Letters Patent No. 279,069 but it is to be understood that the tapered screws or tapered pins, whichever may be preferred, are intended to be used in connection with the hinge-pieces described in any to, the only change in any case required being to give the central perforations in the hubs of the hinge-pieces a tapered form corresponding to that of the screw-or screws, pin or pins, to be inserted into them.
Instead of inserting the screws so that they extend from each end toward the middle of the casting, the central perforations in the hubs may be tapered from one end to the other end of the series of hinge-pieces and a single tapered screw employed, and this applies also to the tapered pin when it is desired to employ it instead of the screw.
I claim-- The combination of a (llXltlflICEtStlllg formed in two or more sections, a series of interlocking hinge-pieces, and one or more tapering screws or tapering pins, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
JAMES YOCOM, JR. Witnesses P. A. FENInonn, J. E. SHAW.
