Description
W. H. HOPE.
STREET SWEEPER.
No. 31,762. Patented Mar. 19, 1861..
YVM. H. HOPE, OF YVASHINGION, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS B. FLORENCE, OF PHlLADELPI-IIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR. SWEEPING STREETS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VM. H. Horn, of WVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Cleaning or Sweeping Streets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a cylindrical brush revolving in a metallic, or other adjustable casing, whereby the dirt is gathered from. the streets, lanes, or alleys, and thrown into the close box or body of the machine, that can be carried off and emptied at some convenient place when a full load' is collected.
It also consists in the arrangement of lever L, in combination with the axle A, bar R and connecting rods 1' 1', whereby the brush is thrown out of gear when it is necessary to remove the machine to some distant place to empty its load.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the machine. Fig. 2 a top view and Fig. 3 a side view.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
W W show the large wheels on which rest the body and other parts of the machine.
C C are the. cogs on wheel WV in which the cogs of small cog wheel to mesh, or work, for the purpose of driving the brush B, said brush B being made of cylindrical form, of hickory splits, or other similar material, and revolves in casing a a, which casing a a; is made adjustable so as to be placed up to the brush B as said brush wears away. This casing a a encircles about one-half the brush, commencing near, or on the ground and ending at the top center of brush B; the object of this casing is to enable the brush B to convey the dirt, or sweepings, into the box 6 or body of the machine.
2' i, show the places where the adjustable casing is attached to the body of the machine.
c is an adjustable partition, which is made to work to the brush B and separates which connect R and L with axle A. Lever L, cross bar R and rods 7 1" are so connected with box I) and axle A A as to move box 5 when it is necessary to ungear the brush B.
s is the slot in box 5 in which axle A moves.
Z shows a lever which the driver works with his foot when necessary to raise the brush B from the ground, or lower the same.
If is the hinged top, or cover, which is used for keepingthe dust confined when the machine is in operation and to enable the driver to see the contents of the box 6.
S is the drivers seat and s s the shafts.
r 7" are small ratchet bars used for the purpose of holding partition 2' i in place, partition 2' 2' being hinged or made movable at its bottom.
to w are small wheels seen in front of the machine, intended to bear the brush from the ground and prevent it (the brush B) from bearing too hard on the ground, or pavement. Said wheels may be made adjustable so as to be raised, or lowered, as the brush B wears away. The brush B is so arranged in its bearings that it can be turned end for end, when necessary, or easily taken out for repair, &c.
h h are handles, to be used when it may be necessary to use the machine by man instead of horse power.
The principles of this machine may be applied to a four wheeled two horse vehicle, or machine, as well as to such a. one as is above described and shown in the drawings.
This machine differs from all other street sweeping machines, inasmuch as but a single re\*olving brush, running in an adjustable half casing, is used to convey the dirt, immediately into a close box which is emptied from its bottom. Also in the mode of gearing and ungearing the brush and the combi nation and arrangement of other parts of the machine. I
Therefore what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The arrangement of acylindrical brush, in street sweepers, revolving in a metallic,
or other, adjustable casing, as described, axle A, which are attached to box, or body, whereby dirt and other substances are gathb for the purpose of ungearing brush B, as ered, Without any other mode of conveyance, set forth and described.
into the box or body of the machine, as set WM. H. HOPE.
5 forth and described. Witnesses:
2. The arrangement of lever L in combi- \VM. LITTLE, nation with bar R, connecting rods 1' r and Jo. SEVERNS.
