Beit known that I, KARL H. I-I. LEINEwE- BER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at South Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car- Brakes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved carbrake. The object it has in view is to improve the general construction of such brakes; and to that end it consists of the novel devices and combination of devices, as will be described.

A represents the car\vheels, B the truckframe, and C suitablehangers secured to such frame for the support of the operative parts of the brake mechanism.
- Suspended from hangers C are suitable f beams, D, preferably of the shape shown in Fig. I, and adapted to support hangers E. As shown in Fig. 3, each hanger E consists of a frameformed of suitable side pieces and crosspieces, a a', the cross-piece a serving as the bottom of the frame, and cross-piece c as a bearing for a vertical shaft, F, to be referred to. One side pieceof each hanger is bent to partly surround beam D and be supported thereby, while the hangers upon the opposite sides of the car are connected in pairs by rods b.
The shaft F, above referred to, is passed through suitable openings formed in crosspieces a a', and is held in position bya nut, c. Upon this shaft midwayl of the two crosspieces there is formed a cam, d, the shape of which is shown in Fig. 5, while keyed to such lshaft at a point below the hanger E is a screwcam, G. The shaft F extends below this cam G, and is inserted into a socket, e, formed upon ablock, H, to be mentioned. Uponits lower end shaft F is provided with a head, f, against which one end ofa coil-spring, g, impinges,the other end of said spring contacting with the top of socket e, whereby the block H is raised when pressure is not applied.
J represents the brake-block7 and consists of a piece provided with grooves 7i h and 7c la, the former adapted to receive projectionsl Z, formed upon the innerside faces of hangers E, thereby providing a guide for such blocks in their lateral adjustment, and the latter, 7s k, adapted to receive projecting pieces m m, formed upon the rear face of brake-shoes K. Formed upon the rear face of each brake-shoe, and at a point between pieces m, is a screw, a, adapted to enteran opening, o, formed in the block J. Blocks J areso situated in hang ers E and with respect to shaft F and its cam d that upon a partial revolution of such shaft the cam d will contactwith two of such blocks and force them outwardly in opposite directions. As these blocks are thus forced outwardly, the shoes secured thereto arebrought into contact with the car-wheels, and a brake thus supplied.
It will be understood that the revolution of shaft F may be accomplished through the medium of a lever L, and any suitable mechanism. Vhile for all ordinary purposes the brake above described will be found sufficient, under certain circumstances, when a sudden stop maybe desired, it will be found beneicial to apply the additional bra-ke, which I have supplied for use in connection with the parts described.
In Fig. 6 I have represented a block, H, upon which the socket e is formed, this block being suspended on shaft F by the arrangement described, and being held up by spring g. Upon the upper face of block H a groove, p, is formed, into which the cam G enters to depress said block. Upon the first partial revolution of shaft F, the brake-blocks J only are operated; but upon the further revolution of said shaft the cam G serves to press block H downwardly. Upon each end of block H there is formed a notch or groove, q, into which a iange, r, formed upon the brake-shoe, is adapted to enter, thereby insuring a steady movement to block H. 11, there are suitable recesses formed in the under face of block II, in which pieces M are pivoted, said pieces being of the shape shown and adapted to partially surround the rail when the block is depressed, as described. By this arrangement it will be seen that a firm grasp upon the rail is obtained, and a thorough and eifective brake secured.

What I claim isl. In1a car-brake, the combination, with a bralre-snoe provided With a screw-threaded projection or pin, of a brake-block provided with a screw-threadedsocket for the reception of such pin, and a camshaft and lever for operating such blocks and shoes, as set forth.

In a car-brake, the combination, with a brake-shoe provided with a screw-threaded adjusting-pin and suitable strengthening-pins, of a brake block provided with a Hscrewthreaded socket, and suitable grooves lfor the reception of such parts, and a cam-shaft and lever foroperating the blocks and shoes, as set forth.
L. In a carbral;e, rhe combination, with suitable shoes, blocks, and a vertical shaft, of a screwrani secured to said shaft, a block suspended on the shaft and adapted to be depressed by the screw-carn, and suitablepieces pivoted to said block and adapted to clasp the rail, as set forth.
