UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK-H. HUBBARD, on BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
VOLATILIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,538, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed March 10, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. HUB- BARD, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Volatilizers, of which the following is a specification.
Disinfecting apparatus has been made in which there is a fan driven by gearing and a spring, and in which the chemical substances are placed inside a vertical cylinder, and the atmosphere is caused to circulate through such cylinder and pass off at the top. A device of this kind is shown in my PatentNo. 282,195.
The object of the present invention is to simplify the construction and lessen the cost of the apparatusand render the same more compact, so that it can easily be transported to the sick-room or place requiring to be disinfected by the volatilization of chemical substances, or where the atmosphere is to be charged with vapors for the treatment of discases.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the volatilizer. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the fan, of the annular pan, and the connecting-case.
The box or case is formed of sides a a, back I), a hinged front, a, a bottom, (Z, and a top, 6. In the cover, or in a partition within the case, is an opening adapted to the reception of an annular pan, f, the edges of which rest upon the partition or top e at the edges of the opening therein. The central portion of this annular pan is open, in order that the current of air set up by the rotary fan h may pass freely through the same. This fan It is rotated by a spring and train of gearing, and the fan his in a case, 12, around which there is a partition, m, so that the atmosphere drawn in through the perforations in the case below such partition will be forced up by the fan and rise through the annular pan f and escape by the opening in the top 6. These parts (shown by dotted lines) may or may not be used, as may be most convenient. It is now to be understood that chemical substances,
perfumery, disinfectants, or other materials that are to be volatilized are placed in the said annular pan, and the vapors pass off with the atmosphere.
Usually it will be necessary to present to the action of the current of atmosphere the liquid materials to be vaporized; For this purpose I employ a spiral spring, 1", the base of which is Within the annular pan f, and
which rises above the central opening in such pan in order that pieces of .asbestus, cloth, wool, cotton, hemp, flax, or other fibrous material may be held up by such spring, and the ends of the fibrous material being in the liquid, the latter is drawn up and volatilized by the atmosphere passing through the same.
This apparatus is compact, it is easily transported from place to place, the annular pan can be changed and another substituted, and
the rapidity of evaporation will be in proportion to the surface of fibrous material exposed to the action of the current of atmosphere.
Usually it is preferable to inclose the whole of the parts in the case, as shown by the ted lines; ratus it is only necessary to have a case to convey air from the fan to the opening in the annular pan, as seen in Fig. 3. All the other parts may be more or less open, as conven ience or taste may dictate.
I do not herein lay claim to any of the devices shown and claimed inmy aforesaid Patent N 0. 282,195. Neither do I claim a revolving fan for setting air in motion, nor a vessel for containing a liquid to be evaporated by the action of the fan, as these have been used.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the inclosing-case, of
a fan, mechanism for driving the same, an
annular pan with a central opening, a spiral wire, and fibrous material supported by the same, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 5th day of March, A. D..
