(fll. 16-137) This invention relates to a door stop and relates more particularly to a door stop which is adjustable and which is adapted to be removably mounted on a hinge pin of a door in position above the floor, the door stop being disposed intermediate the door and a wall or portion of the door frame or facing.
One object of this invention is to provide an improved door stop of the type characterized above, which is of economical but rigid construction and yet very efiicient in operation and unobjectionable in appearance.
A further object is to provide a door stop of the type characterized above having an improved construction and adapted to operate efiiciently on most, if not all, door mountings of the type in which a pair of cooperating hinge leaves are interconnected by a hinge pin and respectively supported on the door and the door frame.
. Still another object of this invention is to provide a door stop having an improved means of adjustment to vary the degree at which the door may be opened.
A further object of this invention is to provide a door stop constituted of two separate generally plate-like parts cooperating with each other and interconnected by a suitable fastener and having arcuate marginal portions disposed in opposed and abutting relationship with each other.
Another object of this invention is to provide a door stop such as characterized above having an improved construction reinforcing its component parts against shocks and forces encountered in its operation.

In the drawing, the door stop is indicated generally at 10, the door at 11, the door frame at 12, and the wall supporting the door frame at 13. The door 11 is hinged to the frame 12 by a plurality of vertically spaced hinges of the well known leaf type. Only one, the top hinge, for example, is shown in the drawing and indicated generally at 14. The cooperating leaves of this hinge are interconneoted by the usual hinge pin 15.
The door stop illustrated in the drawing operates in a manner similar to those of the type shown in Canadian Patent No. 508,953, and comprises a pair of generally plate-like component parts 16 and 17, constructed preferably of metal. Each of these component parts is preferably formed from a single stamping of metal with component part 16 of substantially the same configuration as its companion part 17 to facilitate the tooling required for the fabrication of both parts. However, as will be noted in the drawing, each of the component parts 16 and 17 is suitably modified for coaction with each other.

In this respect component part 16 comprises an arm portion 18 and a marginal segment 20, at one end of the arm portion, as for example of iarcuate configuration, whose periphery is formed on a radius of the axis of the pin 15. In its preferred form, the marginal segment 20 has, in a curvilinear direction transverse the aforesaid radius of the axis of pin 15, one end 22 thereof which extends further away from one side of the arm portion 18 toward door frame 12, for example, than any extension of the other end of the segment on the other side of the projecting arm portion 18. In similar manner component part 17 comprises an arm portion 19 also provided at one end with a corresponding marginal segment 21, valso preferably of arcuate configuration, whose outer edge portion is formed on a radius of the axis of pin 15. However, the marginal segment 21 of this component part 17 has along a curvilinear direction similar to that of its companion part it, one end 23 which extends further away from one side of the projecting arm portion 19 toward door 11, for example, than any extension of the other end of segment 21 on the other side of the projecting arm portion 18.
For coaction, as shown in the drawing, the component parts 16 and 17 of the door stop are assembled with the end 22 of the marginal segment 20 disposed so that it extends away from the projecting arm portion 18 on the side of the door stop nearest door frame 12, and with the end 23 of the marginal segment 21 disposed so that it extends from the projecting arm portion 19 on the side of the door stop nearest the door 11.
The marginal segments 20 and 21 are also provided at their respective distal ends 22 and 23 with integrally formed lugs 24 land 25, respectively, disposed in a plane substantially normal to the plane of their corresponding marginal segments from which they are formed.
To reinforce the transversely extending lugs 24 and 25 of marginal segments 20 and 21 against shocks and other forces encountered during operationof the door stop, the segments have their respective end portions which are immediately adjacent their associated projecting lugs 24 and 25 suitably pressed or embossed into cup- shaped configurations 26 and 27. To further reinforce the lugs 24 and 25, if desired, the marginal segments may have parts thereof adjacent their respective ends 22' and 23 struck out to extend transversely to these segments as cars 28 and 30, respectively, of any appropriate configuration which disposes them in abutment against the corresponding lugs. In the illustrated form additional reinforcement is also provided the door stop by the provision of an integrally formed peripheral flange 31 projecting from and extending along the outer edge 32 of the marginal segment 21). p
To adapt the door stop for coaction with the associated door hinges, the projecting arm portions 18 and 19 of component parts 16 and 17 are apertured at their free or inner ends, as at 33 and 33 respectively, to receive the hinge pin 15 with component part 17 being in over- 7 lapping relationship above, for example, the other component part 16. As shown in FIG. 2 the component parts 16 and 17 are mounted in coacting relationship above the cooperating leaves of the hinge14. It will be manifest that the aforementioned apertures of the component parts 16 and 17 are aligned to receive the pin 15 which interconnects the leaves of the hinge 14, as indicated in'FIG. 3. To reinforce the arm portions 13 and 19 of the component parts forming the door stop, the arms are suitably embossed, by stamping and the like, in opposite directions. The arm portions 18 and 19 have peripheral flanges 36 and'37, respectively, extending toward each other.
To adapt component parts 16 and 17 of the door stop for fastening into fixed but releasable and adjustable 6 relationship, the marginal segments of each of component parts 16 and 17 are provided respectively with arcuate slots 38 and 39 formed on the same radius of the axis of binge pin 15. In the assembled door stop, these. slots overlapv anda bolt 40 extends through the slots as shown in FIGS. 2 and 4, for example; The head of the bolt is preferably arranged uppermost and the bolt is provided with a shank portion 29 which is out-ofround and which, While having a sliding fit in the slots 38 and 39, enables the sides of the slots to rather narrowly confine the shank portion 29 and thus not permit the bolt to turn in the slots. The shank of the bolt is threaded to receive a thumbscrew 41, disposed below the lower part 20 of the door stop, which may be tightened to draw the head of the bolt down firmly on the upper component part 17 to clamp the latter firmly to the lower component part 16 in angularly adjusted relation thereto.
To supplement the clamping action of bolt 40 and thumbscrew 41 the door stop is provided with additional means to releasably secure the component parts against displacement. This retaining means comprises a plurality of spaced apertures 42 in the marginal segment 29 of component part 16, disposed on a radius of the axis of the pin The other portion of the retaining means comprises a stud 43 provided on the same radius in the marginal segment 21, of component part 17, with the stud shaped to a suitable configuration which adapts it for engagement in apertures 42. The stud is formed integrally from the component part 17 by extrusion or by coining as indicated at 44. As will be manifest from the foregoing the stud 43 of component part 17 cooperates selectively with the apertures 42 for angular adjustment of component part 17 relative to component part 16. As previously indicated the component parts 16 and 17. are shown in one extreme adjusted position in FIG. 1 and in the other extreme adjusted position in FIG. 6. It will be understood from the foregoing that the adjusting nut 41 may be loosened to an extent sufiicient to permit the component parts 16 and 17 to be separated enough to permit angular adjustments of one of these component parts relative to the other; that is, sufiicient for the stud 43 to be disengaged from one of the apertures 42 and positioned opposite another of the apertures 42 for engagement therein. The thumbscrew may then be retightened to position the stud in the selected aperture and to clamp the component parts together.
To prevent damage to the door and frame with which the ,door stop is associated and to insure silence during operation.resilient'bumpers 45 are provided on lugs 24 and 25 of the respective marginal segments 29 and 21, one bumper being provided to cooperate with the door 11 and the other bumper being provided to cooperate with the door frame 12- in the illustrated door mounting. These bumpers, which are generally of rubberlike material may be of any suitable configuration adapted for mounting on the lugs but preferably, as illustrated, each is formed, as those which are commercially available, with a body portion 46 interconnected by means of neck portion 47 to the rear or retaining conical portion 48. The lugs 24 and 25 are adapted to receive the bumpers by the provision of openings 49. The end portions 48 of the bumpers are forced through the respective openings 49.
The operation of the door will be manifest from the foregoing description. When the component parts 16 and 17 of the, door stop are adjusted relative to one another in. the manner shown in FIG. 1 and clamped in securement together by the means above described, the door may be opened to swing through an arc of approximately 85 before the bumpers 45, assembled to the'lugs, engage the door ll'and the. door frame 12. It will be understood that as the door is opened the door step may swing with the door or rest against the door frame. As indicated above the component parts 16 and 17 may be adjusted to any of a plurality of positions between the extreme positions shown in FIGS. 1 and 6. As indicated above these lugs may be reinforced by stamping adjacent portions of the peripheral sections into cup-shaped configurations, or reinforced by striking out integral ears from the marginal segments into suitable configurations which adapt them to be disposed'in abutment with the attendantlugs of the marginal segments. As will be appreciated by those versed in the art the two component parts of the door stop may be of any suitable configuration. For example, although each of the component parts has been illustrated as having an arcuate shaped marginal segment and a relatively narrow integral arm projecting from the inner edge thereof intermediate the outer ends of the marginal segments, the component parts may be fan shaped, for example. However, there is a very definite advantage in forming the component parts of substantially the same configuration as shown since it facilitates the manufacture of such parts by simplifying the tooling required.
While only one form of the door stop has been i1- lustrated in the drawing, it will be apparent to those versed in the art that the door stop may take other forms and is susceptible of changes in details Without departing from the principles of the invention and the scope of the claims.
What is claimed is:
I. A door stop comprising a pair of coacting platelike members extending substantially normal to a common rotary axis, each of said members having an arm radiating from said rotary axis and having an outer marginal segment, said arm of each said members being providedwith a hinge pin hole about said rotary axis; each of said arms being embossed in opposite directions relative to each other to provide opposed dished portions having surrounding peripheral fianges extending toward each other, one of said segments having one end thereof along a curvilinear directiontransverse a radius of said axis and extending farther to one side of said door stop than any extension of the other end of said one segment toward the other side of said door stop, said one of said segments having a lug formed by an annular extension of said one segment at its said one end and projecting from said one segment to lie in a plane transverse thereto, the other of said segments having one end in said direction extending farther to the other side of said door stop than any extension of the other end of said other segment on the said one side of said door stop, said other of said segments having a lug formed by an angular extension of said other segment at its said one end thereof and projccting transversely therefrom; resilient bumpers secured to said lugs; and means for releasably securing said members to each other for relative adjustment about said rotary axis comprising a stud on one of said members extending toward the other of said members, a plurality of spaced apertures defined in the other of said members at a common radial distance from said rotary axis, said stud being at the same radial distance from said rotary.
axis as said apertures, the apertures being adapted to receive therein said stud and prevent relative rotary movement of said members when said members are held in clamped engagement, an arcuate slot defined in the marginal segment of each of said members and being in overlapping relation with each other and clamping means received through said slots for clamping said members together to hold said stud in a selected one of the apertures and prevent relative rotary movement of said members.
2. The door stop of claim 1 wherein a portion of each of said segments adjacent their respective one ends are cupped to reinforce the lugs on each of said segments.
3. The door stop of claim 2 wherein a portion of each of said segments adjacent their respective one ends are struck out transverse to said segments to form ears disposed in abutment with said lugs to reinforce said lugs.
4. The door stop of claim 3 wherein one of said ears is provided on each of said segments adjacent each of the inner and outer edges thereof.
5. The door stop of claim 4 wherein one of said segments has formed therefrom a peripheral flange disposed along the outer periphery thereof with said peripheral flange extending toward the other of said segments and said peripheral flange being adapted to embrace the other of said segments.

Claims (1)

1. A DOOR STOP COMPRISING A PAIR OF COACTING PLATELIKE MEMBERS EXTENDING SUBSTANTIALLY NORMAL TO A COMMON ROTARY AXIS, EACH OF SAID MEMBERS HAVING AN ARM RADIATING FROM SAID ROTARY AXIS AND HAVING AN OUTER MARGINAAL SEGMENT, SAID ARM OF EACH SAID MEMBERS BEING PROVIDED WITH A HINGE PIN HOLE ABOUT SAID ROTARY AXIS; EACH OF SAID ARMS BEING EMBOSSED IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS RELATIVE TO EACH OTHER PROVIDE OPPOSED DISHED PORTIONS HAVING SURROUNDING PERIPHERAL FLANGES EXTENDING TOWRD EACH OTHER, ONE OF SAID SGEMENTS HAVING ONE END THEREOF ALONG A CURVILENEAR DIRECTION TRANSVERSE A RADIUS OF SAID AXIS AND EXTENDING FARTHER TO ONE SIDE OF SAID DOOR STOP THAN ANY EXTENSION OF THE OTHER END OF SAID ONE SEGMENT TOWARD THE OTHER SIDE OF SAID DOOR STOP, SAID ONE OF SAID SEGMENTS HAVING A LUG FORMED BY AN ANNULAR EXTENSIONS OF SAID ONE SEGMENT AT ITS SAID ONE END AND PROJECTING FROM SAID ONE SEGMENT TO LIE IN A PLANE TRANSVERSE THERETO, THE OTHER OF SAID SEGMENTS HAVING ONE END IN SAID DIRECTION EXTENDING FARTHER TO THE OTHER SIDE OF SAID DOOR STOP THAN ANY EXTENSION FO THE OTHER END OF SAID OTHER OF SAID THE SAID ONE SIDE OF SAID DOOR STOP, SAID OTHER OF SAID SEGMENTS HAVING A LUG FORMED BY AN ANGULAR EXTENSION OF SAID OTHER SEGMENT AT ITS SAID ONE END THEREOF AND PROJECTING TRANSVERSELY THEREFROM; RESILIENT BUMPERS SECURED TO SAID LUGS; AND MEANS FOR RELEASABLY SECURING SAID MEMBERS TO EACH OTHER FOR RELATIVE ADJUSTMENT ABOUT SAID ROTARY AXIS COMPRISING A STUD ON ONE OF SAID MEMBERS EXTENDING TOWARD THE OTHER OF SAID MEMBERS, A PLURALITY OF SPACED APERTURES DEFINED IN THE OTHER OF SAID MEMBERS AT A COMMON RADIAL DISTANCE FROM SAID ROTARY AXIS, SAID STUD BEING AT THE SAME RADIAL DISTANCE FROM SAID ROTARY AXIS AS SAID APERTURES, THE APERTURES BEING ADAPTED TO RECEIVE THEREIN SAID STUD AND PREVENT RELATIVE ROTARY MOVEMENT OF SAID MEMBERS WHEN SAID MEMBERS ARE HELD IN CLAMPED ENGAGEMENT, AN ARCUATE SLOT DEFINED IN THE MARGINAL SEGMENT OF EACH OF SAID MEMBERS AND BEING IN OVERLAPPING RELATION WITH EACH OF SAID MEMBERS AND BEING IN RECEIVED THROUGH SAID SLOTS FOR CLAMPING SAID MEMBERS TOGETHER TO HOLD SAID STUD IN A SELECTED ONE OF THE APERTURES AND PREVENT RELATIVE ROTARY MOVEMENT OF SAID MEMBERS.
