BAND-CUTTER-A'ND FEEDER FOR THRASHING- MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,401, dated May 5, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN MGHENRY and J AMES ODQNNELL, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Oatawissa, in the county of Franklin and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band-Cutters and Feeders for Thrashing-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in band cutting and feedin g attachments for thrashing-machines, the same being designed more especially as an improvement upon Patent No. 253,815, dated February 14, 1882, and Patent No. 173,586, dated February 15, 1876 5 and our invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate our invention, Figure 1 is a sectional view of the attachment. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of parts.
A represents a suitable supporting-frame, the top beam, A, of which extends beyond the front supporting legs, and carries a platform, B, above which is located the feedapron G. The transverse shaft or at the forward part of the machineis supported in journals attached to the under side of the beams A, while the lower shaft is secured in journals attached to the upper side of the beams A, which are located under and are parallel with the upper beams, A. The lower shaft, 0/, is provided outside of the supporting-frame with with a pulley, b. To the upper part of the supporting-frame are rigidly attached side pieces, D, and a top, D. The side pieces D are cut away for the reception of disks E on the ends of the shaft F, thus providing a depending portion, d, to the lower front ends of which are attached angular metallic strips 0, which project inwardly over the edges of the feed-apron. The shaft F is journaled between uprights located and attached between the These arched bars are provided at one end with tongues i, which fit into blocks I, which are centrally recessed, as shown at 'i. The ends of the arched bars H, adjacent to where they are pivoted to the blocks I, are provided with inclined projecting portions n, which, when the cover is raised, will abut against the top edges of the block I and form a rest or bearing, so that said top will be held in an almost vertical position, and will prevent said cover from being thrown entirely back. The inclined board m of the top will also rest upon the board D and relieve the pintles of the weight of the cover when said cover is raised.
To the shaft J are secured knives j, the cutting-edges of which are curved, as shown, and this shaft has attached at its ends outside of the frame pulleys J j, which are of different diameters, as shown in Fig. 3. The shafts a, F, J are connected to each other by belts. The belt N passes over the pulley on the end of the shaft F, and from thence over the pulley J. A belt, N, which is crossed, passes over the pulleys j b.
The sheaves are fed upon the apron, and
the knives will cut the bands as they are carried forward, and after leaving the rotary feed-apron the straw will be separated and carried forward by the teeth 6, and will be delivered to the thrashing-machine.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the hinged cover only carries the shaft to which the band-cutting knives are attached, and that said cover is thoroughly braced against both lateral and longitudinal movement, as the arched bars, which are rigidly attached to the sides of the cover, snugly embrace the side pieces D of the frame, and when the cover is lowered the ends of the arched pieces are braced by the blocks I. 'By providing this hinged cover, easy access may be had to the knives when it is desired to adjust or sharpen the same.
The transverse bar G is raised slightly above the inclined bottom B wider the rotary feedapron, so that any refuse which may fall or be carried upon the board B will be discharged through this opening.
We claim- 1. In a band-cutting and feeding attachment for thrashing-machines, the combination, with the main frame, of the traveling feedapron, a hinge cover or frame, and a transverse shaft having curved knives mounted in said cover near its front end, said knives operating over said feed-apron, the parts bein g combined substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of an endless apron, the transverse bar with parallel projecting teeth, the distributing-drum with teeth 6, and the .hinged frame, carrying at its front portion a shaft with cutting-knives which operate upon the endless apron substantially as shown, and
