SEAT ATTACHMENT FOR VEHICLES. I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317.395, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed September 16, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. theme, of Ocean Grove, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby- Seat Attachments for Tricycles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts'in all the figures.
Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a plan view of a tricycle to which myimprovement has been applied. Fig. 2, Sheet 2, is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3, Sheet 2, is a sectional plan view of a part of the same, taken through the line a: m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4, Sheet 2, is a sectional front elevation of a part of the same, taken through the line 3 3 Fig. 3.
The object of this invention is to provide baby seat attachments for tricycles, constructed in such a manner that the baby will be carried securely, will not affect the balance of the machine, and canreadily see and be seen while the machine is in use.
The invention consists in the combination, with the part of a tricycle frame directly over the steering-whecl,of ababy-seat, whereby the baby will be carried in view of the rider and without affecting the balance of the machine.
The side rods of the baby-seat are connected with the tricycle-frame by a clamp havinga perforated boss and a set-screw, and a crossbar having an arm to enter the perforation of the clamp-boss, and having its ends perforated to receive the side rods of the seat, and provided with set-screws for fastening the said rods in place, whereby the said babyseat will be adj ustably and separably secured to the said frame, as will be hereinafter fully described.

To the standard H of the steeringwheel G is attached, or upon it is formed, an arm, J, to which is attached the forward end of the rod K. The rear part of the rod K is connected with the steering hand-rod L by a steel ribbon, ,M.

The boss 0 is perforated to receive the arm I, formed upon the central part of the cross bar Q, which arm P is secured in place adjustably by a set-screw, It, passing in through the said boss 0 and resting against the said arm 1?. The ends of the cross bar Q are perforated vertically to receive the side rods, S, of the baby-seat T, which rods are secured in place adjustably by set-screws U. The seat T can be formed ofa single rod bent into such a shape as to form a seat frame and standards, and then provided with a seat and back, V, of canvas or other suitable material or the seat can be formed in any desired manner.
In the drawings the side rods or standards, S, are represented as being bent to form rests for the babys feet; but I prefer to extend. the cross-bar Q to form foot-rests, so that the adjustment of the seat farther from or nearer to the cross -bar Q, as the size of the baby may require, will bring the said seat farther from or closer to the foot-rests, which is not the case when the said cross-bar Q is made short and the foot-rests are formed upon the side rods, S. I am aware that baby-seats have been attached to the rear part of a tricycle-frame,.
and do not claim this construction; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the part of a tricycle frame directly over the steeringwheel, of a baby-seat,isubstantially'as herein shown and described, whereby the baby will be carried in view of the rider and without affecting the balance of the machine, as set I U at its perforated ends, substantially as forth. herein shown and described, whereby the said 10 2.
