SPINNING-MACHINE.
SPECFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,323, dated May 5, 1885.

To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTnMAs B. EDMANDS, of Milford, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Spinning-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, likeletters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to that class of spinning-machines called speeders, wherein the bobbin or spool is carried by a quill so connected with the spindle and Hier as to enable the bobbin or spool to be doffed at any posi tion occupied by the spindle in its traverse.
My invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with a speeder-ilier and the re movable bobbin-receiving quill, of a pivoted quill-holding latch, as Will be hereinafter described; also, in a speeder flier, a slotted quill, and bushing, -and means to connect the upper end of the quill with the ier and the spindle, combined with a sleeve, buttons thereon, and with a gear, and with means to connect it with the said sleeve, for the purposes to be hereinafter stated; also, in a flier and a slotted quill, and means to engage both ends of and retain the same in the flier, combined with a at spindle and means to drive or rotate it, the said spindle driving the quill and bobbin thereon in unison with it, the Hat spin-l dle enabling the bobbin to be doied at any position which it may occupy in the traverse, substantially as will be described.
Myinvention also consists in other features, which will be further set forth in the clai ms at the end of the specication.
Figure 1 represents in elevation one of my improved spindles with a ier and quill, the said parts being supported, as usual, by bolster and spindle rails. Fig. 2, on a larger scale, represents the parts shown in Fig. l above the dotted line 1/ y, the lower part of the quill, the neck of the flier, the bushing, sleeve, p gear, and bolster-rail being broken out to better show the parts, the said figure showing a bobbin in dotted lines. The flier, at its upper end, is provided with a quill-holder, Z, made as a pivoted latch, the rearwardlyexteuded arms of which are attached to a bolt, b', entered loosely through ears of a backward extension, b2, forming a rigid and preferably integral part of the upper yoke, b3, of the flier, the end of t-he bolt entering` a grooved boss, 40, forming part of the holder, and being held therein by a pin, 44, driven through a hole in the bolt, the end of the pin shown in black, Figs. 4 and 9, being held by a slot in the said boss 40.
The bolt b is provided (see Figs. 3 and 10) with a projection, b, to which is attached the inner end of a steel spring, b, the outer end of the said spring being made to engage a pin, 42, within the said backward extension, as shown in said Fig. 3.
The free end of the latch, curved slightly upward and normally pressed downward by the said spring, is providedv with a flaring groove, 3, (see Fig. 4,) and a tongue, 5, which latter extends backward into the fork or slot formed by cutting away the downwardly-extended sleeve, like cntral hub 6 of the said yoke b3.
In the yoke b3 is an abutment, 7, which forms ICO a shoulder to keep the quill G down upon the part, to be described,which rotates it. The groove 3 acts to guide and direct the upper end or head, c2, of the quill Cas the same is brought into line vertically with relation to the axis of rotation of the iiier, as when the roving is being wound upon the bobbin D, (shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2.) The latch yields as the quill is moved from its dotted-line position, Fig. 3, intoits full-line position, and after the arrival of the quill into its full-line position the latch is forced down by the spring to lock the quill in place. The quill is slotted a-t one side for upward of one-half its length (sce Figs. 1 and 2) for the passage through it of the bobbin or spool driving projection S (see Fig. 3) of the spindle E, preferably made as a iiat bar of steel supported at its lower end on averticallymovable foot-step or traverse-rail, F, the projecton 8 entering a notch in the bobbin or or spool, as usual.
The lower end of the quill has a bushing, 10, inserted into it, which is provided with a hole the same in cross-section as the spindle, and the said bushing has a notch, 22, (see Figs. 2 and 7,) which is entered by a projection, 12, at the upper side of a button or plate, 13, (see Fig. 8,) having a neck, 23, at its under side to enter and be attached to the upper end of a tubular shaft, e, the said button 13 having a hole the same in cross-section as the spindle E.
The tubular shaft e, passed through the sleeve at, extended downward from the flier, has at its lower end (see Figs. 6 and 3) an attached bevel-gear, f, having its shank or neck f extended down through a secondary bolster,
g, fixed on the auxiliary bolster-rail B2; andVY at its lower end the said tubular shaft has a button, 15, (see Figs. 6 and 32) of substantially the shape of the button 13, the button 15 being provided with a central opening shaped to correspond in cross-section with the spindle E.
The gear f has a spline, 16, which enters a slot in the tubular shaft e, so that as the said gear is rotated or driven by another bevelgear (not shown) on a horizontal shaft the said gear f will rotate the shaft @,'and it, by the button 15, will rotate the spindle E, while the button 13 will rotate the quill.
When it is desired to doft a bobbin, the operator stops the flier with the presser at its rear side, and seizing the bobbin the operator pushes or lifts the latter on the quill until it strikes the latch, and at the same time the operator, by pulling the bobbin outward, the latch having been lifted, pulls the quill out from the hier, and the bobbin is then pulled from the quill.
The presser h maybe of any usual construction. I have shown it attached to a rod, h',
held in bearings in the flier-leg and having at its lower end a weight, h2. A By slotting the quill and making the spindle iiat, as shown, it is possible to tip the quill out of the hier at any position of the traverse. If the spindle were round,as heretofore, commencing near or below the end 8, and the said quill by a sliding bolt, as in United States Pat-v ent No. 228,809.
I claim- 1. rlhespeeder-iilier audits pivoted quill-V holding latch b, combined with the bobbin-receiving quill, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The bobbin-receiving quill and the speeder-flier having its upper yoke provided with a downwardly-extended sleeve-like hub slotted at one side for the passage of the upper end or head of the quill combined with the pivoted latch having a central opening to receive and hold the upper end ofthe quill, substantially as described.
3. The speeder-iiier and quill supported thereby at its lower end, combined with a latch and a spring to act upon and hold the same, as described, whereby the latch may rise to permit the passage of the quill .under it into central position with relation to the llier, and thereafter act to engage the upper end of the quill and retain it in the flier, substantially as described.
Ll. The flier, the slotted quill, its bushing, means to connect the upper end of the quill with the ilier, and the spindle E, combined with the sleeve e, buttons 12 and 15, and with the gear f, and means to connect it with the said sleeve, substantially as described.
5. The liier and the latch b, pivoted thereto, and provided with the groove 3, combined with the quill, to operate substantially as described.
6. 'Ihe flier having the slotted downwardlyextended hub 6 and the latch b, pivoted thereto, and provided with the groove 3 and tongue 5, combined with the quill, substantially as described.
7. The hier and the slotted quill and means to engage both ends of and retain the sarne in the flier, combined with a flat spindle, and means to drive or rotate it, the said spindle driving the quill and bobbin thereon in uni-v IOO IIO
