INVENTOR.
6 2% a. a/dcza'w ATTO/VEV llnited States Patent 3,169,743 MAGNETIC SOAP HOLDER John S. Page, Jr., 1450 El Mirador Ave., Long Beach 15, Calif. Filed Oct. 5,1962, Ser. No. 228,672 r Claims. (Cl. 248-206) Thisinvention relates to an improved holder for magnetically supporting a bar of soap. a a
It is an object of this invention to provide a simply constructed and exceptionally small and compact magnetic soap holder of neat appearance which advantageously may be mounted on the horizontal surface or rim around a wash basin or sink, or on the upright back or side wall of the basin or sink, or upon the wall of a shower stall.
It is another object of this invention to provide a magnetic soap holder of the character described which will support a bar of soap in front of the holder and inclined in such a manner that the soap readily and easily may be removed and replaced and will cause water to drain therefrom into the basin or sink, or in the shower wall installation, to drain in a direction away from the shower wall toward the outlet in the bottom of the shower stall.
It is another object of this invention to provide a magnetic soap holder of the character described in which the above objectives are achievedby forming the holder with a baseand means thereon for supporting a magnet so that an operative face of the magnet is exposed and disposed at an angle with respect to the base; for example, so that the included angle between the exposed magnet face and the plane of the base is less than 90 degrees. With this arrangement when the holder is to be mounted on a horizontal or nearly horizontal surface, the base is mounted on such a surface and the holder is turned so that the ma net face is disposed to support a bar of soap in front of the holder and so as to be inclined toward and to face a person in front of the holder seeking use of the soapor replacement thereof on the holder. When the holder is to be mounted on a vertical surface or wall it is rotated 180 degrees from the position in which it is mounted on a horizontal surface and the base is then afiixed on the vertical surface or wall so that the magnet face will support a bar of soap in front of the holder and inclined downwardly and outwardly from the vertical surface or wall.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a magnetic soap holder such as described in which the base and means thereon for supporting a magnet in the desired inclined position relative to the base, inexpensively may be molded or otherwise formed as an integral unit of suitable plastic material, with the magnet supporting means formed as a hollow rectangular shell or socket into which a permanent magnet with conventional pole pieces readily may be fitted to remain in place therein.
It is a further object to provide a magnetic soap holder such as described which is constructed and arranged so that it may be secured in place on a supporting surface by cementing the base of the holder to the supporting surface.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described or will become apparent to those skilled in the art, and the novel features of the invention will be defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a magnetic soap holder embodying the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a side elevation partly in section of the holder or installed on the horizontal rim around a wash basin; and
FIG. 3 is a side elevation of the holder as installed on an upright surface of a wall.
As shown in the drawing, a magnetic soap holder constructed in accordance with the present invention com- 3,169,743 Patented Feb. 16, 1965 "ice prises a base 4, magnet supporting means in the form of a socket 5 extending angularly from the base and a permanent magnet unit 6 comprising a core 7 and pole pieces 8 and 9 which are press fitted or otherwise secured in the cavity of thesocket 5, with the face of the magnet disposed at an angle to the plane of the base.
A bar of soap 10 havinga small steel disk 13 affixed on a face thereof by having a flange 12 on the disk embedded in the soap, may be releasably supportedby the holder by placing the soap in front of the holder so that the disk 13 engages the face of the magnet 6.-
It is desired that the holder be small and of simple construction with provision for mounting it on a horizontal surface or upon a vertical surface or wall, with the magnet face disposed at such an angle that with either of such installations, the soap will be supported in front of the holder in such an inclined position that water will drain therefrom in the desired direction and the soap readily and easily removed and replaced with respect to the holder. Accordingly, the base 4 is small and provided with a planar mounting surface adapted to be afiixed to a support, for example, as by being cemented thereto.
The socket 5 is joined to the base and extended angularly outwardly therefrom with its outer end and the face of the magnet substantially flush and disposed so that preferably the included angle between the. planar mounting surface of the base and the magnet face is less than 90 degrees.
When the holder is to be installed on a horizontal surface such as the rim 14 of a wash basin or sink 15', as shown in FIG. 2, the base 4 is placed flatwise 0n the rim 14 with the socket 5 positioned so that the magnet face is inclined downwardly toward and preferably over the basin or sink whereby water will drain from the soap into the basin or sink.
If the holder is to be installed on a vertical wall 16 as shown in FIG. 3, for example, the wall of a shower-stall, it is rotated 180 degrees from the position in which it is installed on a horizontal surface and the base 4 is affixed vertically to the wall 16 with the magnet face inclined downwardly and outwardly away from the wall 16. With this installation the bar of soap will be supported in an inclined position so that water will drain from the soap in a direction away from the wall 16 and the soap readily may be removed and replaced.
The base 4 and socket 5 conveniently may be molded in one piece of any suitable plastic material, with the cavity of the socket 5 of suflicient depth to frictionally retain the magnet unit 6 therein in the desired inclined position.
While the base 4 is here shown is square and flat and the socket 5 is of rectangular cross section and these formations will provide for a small and compact holder of neat attractive appearance, it is to be understood that the base and socket may be of other shapes provided the base has a planar mounting surface and the socket will support the magnet with the magnet face at the particular angle herein noted with respect to the base.
I claim:
1. A magnetic soap holder comprising: a base having a mounting surface adapted to be afiixed to a support; a magnet; and a magnet supporting projection on said base extending angularly outwardly from and to one side of an edge of said base; said projection having an outer end in which said magnet is mounted with the face of the magnet so inclined with respect to the base that a bar of soap having a member aflixed thereto subject to being magnetically held by said magnet, may be supported by the holder in a position inclined from the vertical and in front of said holder when said member is engaged with said magnet face.
