SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,959, dated May 5, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SABER GESLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Wheeled Flow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a class of wheeled plows known as the sulkyplow.
Its object is to render this class of plows more efficient, and to reduce their cost.
It consists in a novel method of supporting the plow on carrying-wheels having independent a-Xlesupports in independent planes; in
supporting one of the carrying-wheels within the heel of the plow; in a novel connection of the pole with the plow-beam, and with the axle tree support of one of the carrying- I wheels; in a novel connection of the operatinglever with the axle-tree of one of the can rying-wheels and with the pole, and in other improvements, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an isometrical representation of a sulky plow embodying my invention; Fig. 2, an isometrical representation of the plow and its wheelsupport. Fig. 3 is a horizontal central section of the wheel-support of the plow, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of my improved sulkylow a The plow represented in the figures consists, essentially, of the share A, mold board B, landside O, and beam D, which, with the exceptions to be hereinafter pointed out, are substantially the same, and are joined in substantially the same manner as like parts in plows now in use and to be found in the trade. At a is represented a bearing-support rising above the upper edge of the landside at its rear end. This support in this instance is produced by bending the rear end portion of the landside inward and folding it on the inner face thereof.
At 1) is represented a bearing of bar form,
fixed to the inner face of the mold-board, from which point it extends rearward to a position opposite the bearing a. The end portions of these bearings a and b are perforated to receive a suitable clamping-bolt.
At G is represented the furrow carryingwheel, produced in pulley form with tubular hub.
At 0 is represented a thiinble axle-bearing fitted to the tubular hub of the carrying-wheel G. This carrying-wheel G, with its thimblebearing a and end washers, d, is placed between the perforated ends of the bearing-supports a and b, and a screw clampingbolt, e, is passed through the bearings, washers, and thimble-journal, and by means of which the parts are firmly clamped to serve as a brace to connect the landside and mold-board and to support the wheel to revolve on its thimble-bearing. The position of this supportingwheel relatively with the bottom of the plow is such that in use its tread will engage the bottom of the furrow and to a proper extent support the rear end of the plow to lessen its bottom friction. Its position in the heel of the plow is such that when the forward end of the plow is elevated its rear end will be supported on the wheel to carry the plow elevated in transportation.
At E is represented a landside carryingwheel of an ordinary construction, mounted to revolve on an axle-arm of an axle-tree, F. This axle-tree F at its end portion, near the carrying-wheel, is bent in crank form.
At H is represented a sleeve-bracket fitted to the end portion of the axle-tree F in a manner to permit of an oscillatory movement of the parts, and is kept in position on the axle-' tree by means of a collar, It, held in position on the axle-tree by a set-screw having a screwthreaded connection with the collar. The plate portion 13 of the sleeve-bracket is securely fixed to the plow-beam by sufficient screw-clamping bolts.
At I is represented the tongue or pole of the sulky, having a pivotal connection at K with the plow-beam in a manner to permit a vertical movement of pole or plow-beam.
At Lis represented a slotted ratchet-bracket fixed to the rear end of the pole. This ratchet- .bracket is provided with ratchet-teeth on its upper free edge to receive a detent. It is also provided with an angular slot, Z, parallel with the upper toothed edge of the bracket.
At N is represented an operating hand-leroo ver having its lower end fixed to the end of the axle-tree projecting from the sleeve-bracket. This lever N, from its connection with the axle-tree, rises by the side of the slotted ratchet-bracket, and is fitted with an anti-friction roller (represented in the dotted lines at n) projecting from the side of the lever to enter the angular slot Z in the ratchet-bracket.
The operating hand-lever is provided with a spring-actuated bolt-detent, p, to engage the teeth of ratchet-bracket to fix the lever in position when adjusted. The spring-actuated bolt-detent p is connected by a rod, 8, to a thumblever, t, having a pivotal connection with the hand-end portion of the lever in such a manner that depressing the thumb lever will operate to disengage the detent from the teeth of the ratchet and permit a free backand'forth movement of the handle end of the lever, which movement of the lever, by reason of its connection with the slotted bracket, will operate to raise or depress the rear end of the pole as the lever is moved back and forth.
At P is represented a seat-spring support fixed to the sleeve-bracket, and on its upper end is fixed a drivers seat, R.
At T is represented a foot-support fixed t0 the lower end of seatspring, in position to receive the feet of the driver when mounted in his seat.
In the use of my improved sulky-plow the team is connected with the forward end of the plow-beam and with the forward end of the pole in the usual manner. The driver is then mounted in his seat, and by means of the hand lever is enabled to control the operations of the plow to regulate its running depth, and to elevate and support it on the carryingwheels for transportation. By this construction and arrangements of the parts, the forward movement of the hand-lever, by reason of its anti-friction-roller connection with the slot of the ratchet-bracket and the relative position of the parts, will operate to depress the rear end of the pole and the forward end of the plow pivoted thereto, to cause the plow to enter the ground, and when adjusted to the proper running depth the detent-bolt engag- 1ng-the ratchet-teeth will serve to hold the parts in their adjusted position and control the running depth of the plow. The rearward movement of the hand-lever, by reason of the conformation and position of the parts, will operate to elevate the rear end of the pole and the plow pivoted thereto, and the connection of the detent-bolt with the notched rear end of the ratchet-bracket will serve to hold the plow elevated for turning or for transportation. In these operations the supporting-wheel in the rear end of the plow serves as the fulcrum or pivotal point. It will further be noticed that, by reason of the crankformed axle -tree, the carrying-wheels will maintain their vertical position relatively with the ground in any adjustment of the plow by means of the hand-lever.
I claim as my invention l. The combination, with the plow-beam,-
and with the crank axle-tree of the land-wheel, of a sleeve-bracket provided with a plate integral therewith by which said bracket is fixedly attached directly to and extends from the side of the plow-beam to form a support for the axle-tree, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the axle-tree of the landwheel, and with the tongue pivotally connected with the plow-beam, of a ratchetbracket fixed to the pole and an operatinglever fixed to axle-tree, and having a free connection with the ratchet-bracket-, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the tongue pivotally connected with the plow-beam, and the crank axle-tree of the land-wheel pivotally connected to the plow-beam, of a ratchet-bracket at tached to the tongue, and an operating-lever fixedly connected to the said axle-tree, and having a free connection with the ratchetbracket, and provided with a spring-actuated pawl to engage the teeth of the bracket, sub stantially as and for the purposes specified.
4. The combination, with the sleeve-bracket connecting the crank-axle to the plow-beam, of a seat-support fixed to the sleeve and having a seat fixed to its upper end portion, and a foot-support fixed to .its lower end portion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
