  • This invention relates to a novel collapsible paperboard carrier for holding bottles and the like, and in particular, to a novel bottle carrier having a row of bottle receiving cells on each side of a central partition panel of the carrier and a centermost bottle receiving cell of each row having an effective height greater than the effective height of any adjacent bottle receiving cell, and also including a partition member in the centermost bottle receiving cells to form a centermost double bottle receiving cell in each of the rows of the bottle carrier.

(Cl. 220-115) This invention relates to a novel collapsible paperboard carrier for holding bottles and the like, and in particular, to a novel bottle carrier having a row of bottle receiving cells on each side of a central partition panel of the carrier and a centermost bottle receiving cell of each row having an effective height greater than the effective height of any adjacent bottle receiving cell, and also including a partition member in the centermost bottle receiving cells to form a centermost double bottle receiving cell in each of the rows of the bottle carrier.
An object of this invention is the provision of a novel collapsible bottle carrier provided with two parallel rows of four bottle receiving cells in each row, the carrier being formed from a single piece of paperboard material and including a bottom, opposed side walls extending upwardly from two opposite edges of the bottom, end walls extending between the side walls, cross partitions adjoining upper portions of the side walls and extending inwardly therefrom to a center partition and a partition member located between two adjacent cross partitions forming a enterm'ost cell for receiving two bottles.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel collapsible bottle carrier including two parallel rows of four bottle receiving cells in each row, the bottle carrier including a bottom wall, opposed side walls extending upwardly from two opposite edges of the bottom wall, end walls extending between the side walls, cross partitions adjoining uppermost portions of the side walls to define therebetween a centermost bottle receiving cell having an effective height greater than the effective height of adjacent bottle receiving cells and a partition member provided between the cross partitions of the centermost bottle receiving cell to form a double or twin bottle receiving centermost cell having an overall effective height greater than the effective height of adjacent bottle receiving cells.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a novel bottle carrier of the type immediately above described wherein the cross partitions are connected along vertical fold lines to the side walls and to a center partition extending axially of the bottle carrier, and each of the partition members is formed integrally from the center partition along a vertcial fold line, each partition member extending outwardly from the center partition to a respective side wall between and parallel to the cross partitions to form the double bottle receiving centermost cells. Another object of this invention is the provision of a novel bottle carrier of the character described above, the bottle carrier being formed from a sheet material blank including a pair of substantially identical central partition forming panels, each of the central partition forming panels of the carrier blank being provided with at least a longitudinal fold line and a transverse severance line to form a partition member which is foldable to a position between and parallel to the centermost bottle receiving cell set off by adjacent cross partitions of the bottle carrier to form a centermost double botle receiving cell on each side of the central partition panel when the carrier blank is erected to form the bottle carrier.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel bottle carrier blank constructed from a single sheet of paper stock material including two substantially identical blank portions integrally joined along a central transverse ice fold line, each blank portion including a bottom panel, a side panel, an end panel joined to each side panel, a first transverse severance line extending between a first pair of longitudinal fold lines to define therewith the length and maximum effective height of the side panel, a severance line traversing each one of the end panels and terminating at a pair of short parallel fold lines of the side panel to form a pair of cross partitions from the material of the side panel, a longitudinally extending fold line defined with one of the severance lines traversing the end panels a central partition panel, and a transverse severance line in the central partition panel forming a partition member from the material of the central partition panel which is foldable for location between the cross partitions to separate a centermost maximum effective height bottle receiving cell defined in part by the cross partitions into H formed from an uppermost portion of the side wall.

It is well known in the bottle carrier manufacturing industry to fabricate what is commonly termed a two by three carrier. Such carrier is designed to hold six bottles in two rows of three bottles in each row arranged back to back and having and having a carrying handle above and between the rows. There are three bottle re ceiving cells in each of the rows and a centermost of the bottle receiving cells of each row is generally greater in height than the effective heights of adjacent bottle receiving cells. This is primarily due to the fact that the centermost bottle receiving cell of each row is formed by a pair of cross partitions which are in turned formed from an adjacent side wall of the bottle carrier. Thus, while the height of the centermost bottle receiving cell is substantially equal to the maximum height 'of the side wall of the carrier, adjoining bottle receiving cells are of a lesser effective height because the cross partitions are generally The difference in effective heights between the centermost bottle receiving cell and adjacent bottle receiving cells of the two by three bottle carrier is proportional to the height of the cross partitions formed from the side walls.
The carrier manufacturing industry has for years attempted to develop a relatively easily manufacturable and economic two by four bottle receiving carrier without reducing the effective height of a centermost bottle receiving cell and the attended advantages thereof. One important advantage of a high centermost bottle receiving cell lies in the fact that the carrying handle of the carrier is generally located centrally of the carrier and the greater amount of material used in forming the centermost cell or cells of the carrier strengthen and reinforce the carrier at a point where the maximum bottle-load is centered. Furthermore, it is desirable to package bottles in a carrier having maximum side wall height for a given number of bottles to prevent the bottles from accidentally falling out "of the carrier and being broken.
Until this invention no known two by four bottle carrier having a two high center cell i.e. a centermost cell having a maximum effective height greater than the height of adjacent bottle receiving cells and partitioned to receive two bottles, has been developed. Furthermore, the advantages of the disclosed two high center cell carrier are obtained from a minimum increase in the material from which the carrier is constructed as com pared to the material employed in fabricating known carriers, and without the need for complex manufacturing procedures than are required to produce known carriers lacking the above-noted advantages.
With the above, and other objects in view that will hereinafter appear, the nature of the invention will be more clearly understood by reference to the following detailed description, the appended claims and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawings:

A complete and accurate understanding of this invention will be best acquired by first describing a carrier blank it? of FIGURE 5 from which a two high center cell carrier ill of FIGURES 1 through 4 is constructed.
- The carrier blank ll? of FIGURE 5 is formed from a single sheet of paper stock material. The carrier blank 1% includes two substantially identical carrier blank portions 12- and i3 separated by a central transverse fold line 14. Each of the blank portions 12 and 13 is provided with a transverse fold line 15 spaced from and parallel to the central transverse fold line 14. An identical bottom panel 16 is set off between each transverse fold line 15, the central transverse told line 14 and a pair of opposed bottom edges R7. The bottom panels l6l6 form the bottom of the two high center cell carrier 11 in a manner to be described hereafter.
Each of the blank portions 12 and 13 includes a side panel 1% bounded by the transverse fold line 15, a first pair of longitudinal fold lines 26 and a transverse line of severance or out line 21. A pair of short, spaced parallel, longitudinal fold lines 22 are formed in the side panel 18 parallel to the first pair of longitudinal fold lines 20 and terminating normal to the transverse cut line 21. The distance between the pair of short parallel fold lines 22 corresponds tojthe length of each of the two high center cells of the carrier 11 while the length of the parallel fold lines 22 is the height of the two high bottle receiv-' ing center cells of the carrier 11 in excess of the height of bottle receiving cells adjoining the two high center cells as will become more apparent hereafter. The distance between the short, parallel, longitudinal fold lines 22 is substantially twice the distance between any one of the short parallel longitudinal fold lines 22 and an adjacent one of the first pair of longitudinal fold lines 263. 7
Each of the blank portions 12 and 13 has a short end edge 23 and a longer and edge 2 8-. An irregular out line 25 extends transversely from the short end edge 23 toward a longitudinal fold line 26, obliquely toward one of the first pair of longitudinal fold lines adjacent the longitudinal fold line 26 and terminates at the short parallel longitudinal fold line 22. An end panel 27 lies between the longitudinal told line 26, the adjacent longitudinal fold line 20 and the oblique portion. of the irregular out line 25 between the longitudinal fold lines 26 and 20. An end tab 23 lies between the longitudinal fold line 26 and the short end edge 23. The end tab 28 includes a hook por- 5% tion 3b which lockingly cooperates with the bottom panels l6ll6 in a well known manner.
Another end tab 31 is formed in the blank portions 12 and 13 between the longer end edge 24 and an adjacent longitudinal fold line 32. The end tab 31 includes an outwardly directed hook or looking projection 33, similar to the hook 3b of each of the end tabs 28.
An irregular severance or cut line 34 extends from the longitudinal fold line 32 obliquely toward the longitudinal fold line 29 adjacent the longitudinal fold line 32 and terminates at the short longitudinal fold line 22, also adjacent the last-mentioned longitudinal fold line 2%).
The longitudinal fold line 32, the adjacent longitudinal fold line 2t? and the oblique portion of the irregular cut line 34 between the longitudinal fold lines 29 and I define an end panel 35 in each of the blank portions 12 and 13.
A cross partition 36 and a cross partition 3'7 are formed from the material of the side panel 13 of each of the blank portions 12 and E3. The cross partition 36 is set off by the transverse portion of the irregular cut line 25, the short longitudinal fold line 22, a portion of the transverse line of severance 21 and a portion of the fold line between the transverse severance line 21 and the irregular out line 25. The cross partition 37 is similarly set oil by the transverse portion of the irregular out line 34, the short longitudinal fold line 22 a portion of the transverse severance line 21 and a portion of the longitudinal fold line 2t) between the horizontal portion of the irregular out line 34 and the transverse severance line 21.
A fold line 38 forms a longitudinal continuation of the short longitudinal fold line 22 adjacent the cross partition 3:; in each of the blank portions 12 and 13. The longitudinal fold line 358 separates a carrying handle forming panel all from a partition forming panel 41.
The carrying handle forming panel 40 of each of the blank portions 12 and 13 is identical and is bounded by the longitudinal fold line 33, the transverse severance line 21, the portion of the longitudinal fold line 2% adjacent the cross partition 37, the oblique portion of the irregular out line and an uppermost portion of the longitudinal fold line 32. A transverse access opening 39 is formed in eachof the carrying handle forming panels 469 of the blank portions 12 and 13. An arcuate portion 42 extends into each of the access openings 41 from a {old line 43. A short transverse fold line 44 inthe blank portion 12 sets oil a narrow, elongated, rectangular strip 45 from the carrying handle forming panel dtl, while a similar fold line 46 of the blank portion 13 sets off a longer, elongated rectangular strip 47 from the carrying handle forming panel 4% of the blank portion 13.
The partition forming panel 41 is set oil by the longitudinal fold line 3%, the transverse severance line 21, the portion of the longitudinal fold line 2 adjacent the cross partition 36 and the irregular out line 25 terminating at the short end edge 23. The partition forming panel 41 includes a substantial rectangular area 43 bounded by the longitudinal fold line 38, a portion of the transverse severance line 21, a fold line 50 parallel to the fold line 38 and forming a continuation of the longitudinal fold line 29 adjacent the cross partition '36 and a top edge 51. An irregular out line 52 begins at the top edge 51 and extends transversely across the fold line 5t) then normally toward the oblique portion of the irregular out line 25 and thereafter extends normally to and terminates at a longitudinal fold line 53 forming an extension of the longitudinal fold line 26 separating the end panel 27 from the end tab 28. A substantially inverted L-shaped portion 54 is bounded by a portion of the irregular-cut line 52, a short longitudinal out line 55 adjacent and parallel to the longitudinal fold line 56, a short transverse fold line 56 and portions of the irregular out line 25 and the fold line 53. The inverted L-shaped portion 54 is foldable along the transverse fold line 56 into overlying engagement with a substantially triangular portion 57 having a narrow elongated leg 58 between the longitudinal out line 55 and the fold line 50.
The irregular cut line 52 along with the portion of the fold line 53 adjacent the inverted L-shaped portion 54 and the portion of the irregular out line 25 extending from the longitudinal fold line 26 to the short end edge 23 sets off a partition member 60. The partition member 60 in each of the blank portions 12 and 13 includes a rectangular area 61, a spanning portion 62 between the fold line 53 and a shorter fold line 63, and a securing tab 64.
The two high center cell bottle carrier 11 of FIGURES 1 through 4 is erected from the carrier blank of FIG- URE 5 by first applying adhesive to the carrier blank 14) upon the various indicated stippled portions in FIGURE 5 Each of the partition forming panels 41 is folded about a respective one of the longitudinal fold lines 33 to bring the adhesively coated rectangular area 48 into contact with the canying handle forming panel 40 of each of the blank portions 12 and 13. Adhesive is then applied to the opposite side of the rectangular area 48, the securing tab 64, the triangular portion 57 and the elongated leg 58 thereof, and the inverted L-shaped portion 54 of each of the blank portions 12 and 13. The partition member 60 and the inverted L-shaped portion 54 are then folded about the short transverse fold line 56 to bring the inverted L-shaped portion 54 into contact with the triangular portion 57 and the adhesively coated surface of the securing tab 64 into contact with the side panel 18 of a respective one of each of the blank portions 12 and 13.
Each of the end panels 27 is folded about the adjacent longitudinal fold line 20 to bring the end panels 27 into overlying contact with the side panels 18. At the same time the end panels 27 are being folded, the end tabs 31 are also folded about the longitudinal fold lines 32, and the narrow elongated rectangular strip 45 of the blank portion 12 is also folded about the fold line 44 into adhesive contact with the carrying handle forming portion 49. Adhesive is then applied to each of the end tabs 28 and 31. The entire carrier blank 10 is then folded about the central transverse fold line 14 which brings the adhesively coated end tabs 28 and 31 of the blank portion 12 into contact with the adhesively coated end tabs 28 and 31 of the blank portion 13. The folding of the carrier blank 10 about the central transverse fold line 14 also brings the rectangular areas 61, the inverted L- shaped portions 54 and the carrying handle forming panels 40 of the blank portions 12 and 13 into overlying adhesive contact. The narrow elongated strip 47 of the carrying handle forming panel 40 of the blank portion 13 is then folded about the transverse fold line 46 into overlying adhesive contact with the carrying handle forming panel 4i? of the blank portion 12 to complete the fabrication of the carrier blank 10 into the two high center cell bottle carrier 11 of FIGURES 1 through 4 of the drawings.
Attention is now directed to the fully erected bottle carrier ofFIGURES 1 through 4 of the drawings. The bottle carrier 11, when fully erected, includes an end wall formed by the adhesively joined end panels 27 and an opposite end wall formed by the adhesively secured end panels 35. A pair of side walls 18 are secured to the end walls along the fold lines 20 and to a bottom wall formed by the bottom panels 1616 along the fold lines -15. The carrying handle forming panels 40-40 extend the entire length of the bottle carrier 11 between the end panels 27 and 35, as is best illustrated in FIG- URE 4 of the drawings.
The cross partitions 36 and 37, and the cross member 60 extend outwardly from each of the carrying handle forming panels 40 of the blank portions 12 and 13 to form two identical bottle receiving rows each having four bottle receiving cells 65-68. The two center or centermost of the bottle receiving cells 66 and 67 are substantially higher than the adjoining bottle receiving cells 65 and 68. As is best illustrated in FIGURE 1 of the drawings, the ditference in height between the center cells 66 and 67 as compared to the adjoining bottle receiving cells 65 and 68 occurs because the cross partitions 36 and 37 are formed from an uppermost portion of the material of the side walls or panels 18. It should be particularly noted that no material from the side walls or panels 18 is used to form the partition members of the bottle carrier 11. Rather, each of the partition members 60 is formed in the manner heretofore described from the partition forming panel 41 of each of the blank portions 12 and 13. In this manner the spanning portion 62 of each of the panel members 60 divides the area between the cross partitions 36 and 37 into the two high center bottle receiving cells 66 and 67 on opposite sides of the carrying handle panel 40.
Attention is now directed to FIGURES 3 and 4 of the drawings which illustrate the reinforcement afforded the bottle carrier 11 by the partition members 6t) at a centermost position of the carrier 11 where the weight of the bottles is centered. The rectangular areas 48, the triangular portion 57 and the inverted L-shaped member 54 form a substantially rigid beam between the carrying handle forming panels 49. The spanning portions 62 of the partition members 60 are integrally joined to this beam by the fold line 53. The rectangular areas 61 of the partition members 60 are adhesively secured together in the manner previously described, and the securing tabs 64 secure each of the spanning portions 62 to an adjacent side wall or panel 18 of the bottle carrier 11. In the absence of the partition members 66 there would be a tendency for the bottle carrier 11 to buckle at the ccntermost portion thereof because of the weight of the bottles received in the bottle receiving cells 65-68. However, as is clearly illustrated in FIGURE 2 of the drawings, the partition members 60 and the spanning portions 62 thereof rigidity and reinforce the central portion of the bottle carrier 11 and prevent excessive buckling which would otherwise tend to cause buckling of the bottle carrier 11.
From the foregoing it will be seen that novel and advantageous provision has been made for carrying out the desired end. However, attention is directed to the fact that variations may be made in the bottle carrier and bottle carrier blank disclosed herein without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A carrier blank constructed from a sheet material blank comprising two substantially identical blank portions integrally joined along a central transverse fold line, each blank portion including a bottom panel, a side panel adjoining the bottom panel along a transverse fold line, an end panel joined to each side panel along each of a first pair of longitudinal fold lines, a first transverse severance line extending between the first pair of longitudinal fold lines and defining with the first transverse fold line, the maximum effective height of the side panel, a severance line traversing each one of the end panels and terminating at a pair of short parallel fold lines of the side panel to form apair of cross partitions from the material of the side panel, a longitudinally extending partition forming fold line cooperative with one of the severance lines traversing one of the end panels to define therewith a partition forming panel, and a transverse severance line in the partition forming panel forming a partition member from the partition forming panel foldable for location between the cross partitions to separate a portion of maximum height of the side walls into two bottle receiving cells when the carrier blank is erected to form a carrier.
2. The carrier blank as defined in claim 1 wherein a first longitudinal fold line is formed in each of the partition members to form a tab adapted to be secured to an opposite side panel of the carrier blank.

The carrier blank as defined in clairn 2 wherein a second longitudinal fold line is formed in each of the areaars each of the partition members and a transverse fold line :is provided between the termination of the last mentioned parallel severance line and normal to one of the fold lines of the first pair of longitudinal fold lines.
5. A carrier blank constructed from a sheet material blank comprising two substantially identical blank portions integrally joined along a central transverse fold line, each blank portion including a bottom panel, a side panel adjoining the bottom panel along a transverse fold line,
an end panel joined to each side panel along each of a first pair of longitudinal fold lines, a first transverse severance line extending between the first pair of longitudinal fold lines and defining with the first transverse fold line,
the maximum effective height of the side panel, a severance line traversing each one of the end panels and terminating at a pair of short parallel fold lines of the side panel to form a pair of cross partitions from the material of the side panel, a longitudinally extending partition forming fold line cooperative with one of the severance lines traversing one of the end panels to define therewith a partitransverse severance line in the partition forming panel,
the irregular transverse severance line setting off a partition member from the partition forming panel and a longitudinal fold line in the partition member setting ed a securing tab of the partition member. I

A collapsible bottle carrier having two parallel bottle receiving rows of four bottle receivingcells each, said bottle carrier being formed from a single piece of sheet material and comprising a bottom, opposed side walls extendingupwardly from two opposite edges of the bottom, end walls extending between the side walls, cross partitions formed from upper portions of the side walls and extending inwardly therefrom, the inner ends of said cross partitions being joined to a center partition and a partition member between adjacent cross partitions whereby two parallel bottle receiving rows of four bottle receiving cells each are formed between the end walls of the carrier, said partition member forming a portion of a partition forming panel, said partition forming panel being folded along'a vertical fold line into engagement with said center partition, a panel portion of said partition forming panel being folded along a horizontal fold line into engagement with said partition forming panel, and said partition member being joined by a vertical fold line to said panel portion.

A collapsible bottle carrier having two parallel bottle receiving rows of four bottle receiving cellseach, said bottle carrier being formed from a single piece of sheet material and comprising a bottom, opposed side walls extending upwardly from two opposite edges of the bottom, end walls extending between the side walls, cross partitions formed from upper portions of the side walls and extending inwardly therefrom, the inner ends of said cross partitions being joined to a center partition and a partition member between adjacent cross partitions where by two parallel b'ottle receiving rows of four bottle receiv- H mg cells each are formed between the end walls of the carrier, said partition member forming a portion of a partition forming panel, said partition forming panel being folded along a vertical fold line into engagement with said center partition, a panel portion of said partition forming panel being folded along a'horizontal fold line into engagement with said partition forming panel, said partition member being joined by a vertical fold line to said panel portion, said partition forming panel including the partition member thereof being constructed entirely from material of said center partition between said end walls.
8. The collapsible bottle carrier as defined in claim 7 including a further panel portion of said partition forming panel secured to one of said side walls and said center partition.
9. A collapsible bottle carrier having two parallel bottle 7 receiving rows of four bottle receivingcells each, said bottle carrier being formed from a single piece of sheet material and comprising a bottom, opposed side walls extending upwardly from two opposite edges of the bottom, end walls extending between the side walls, cross partitions formed from upper portions of the side walls and extending inwardly therefrom, the inner ends of said cross partitions being joined to a center partition, said center partition including a partition forming panel, said partition forming panel including a first panel portion folded along a vertical fold line against a portion of the center partition, a second panel portion folded along a horizontal fold line against the second panel portion, and a partition member folded along a second vertical fold line to the second panel and extending normal thereto, and a terminal end of said partition member being secured to one of said side walls between adjacent cross partitions whereby two parallel bottle receiving rows of four bottle receiving cells each are formed between the end walls of the carrier.

A carrier blank comprising a sheet material blank having first and second blank portions, each blank portion including first and second pairs of spaced fold lines, and adjacent centermost two of said fold lines defining a side panel of said blank portion, each of said two fold lines defining an end panel at opposite sides of said side panel with an associated one of the remaining two fold lines of said first and second pair of fold lines, and a partition member located between said remaining two fold lines, said partition member being formed from a portion of said blank similarly located between said remaining two fold lines, said partition member being defined at least in part by a fold line generally parallel to said first and second pairs of fold lines and a first severance line generally transverse to one of said fold lines, said partition member terminating in a free edge and being located adjacent one of said end panels, said 'one end panel including an edge defined by a second severance line spaced from said first severance line, and said first severance line merging with said free edge.
11. The carrier blank as defined in claim 10 including a fold line between said first and second severancelines and being disposed generally normal to said first and second pairs of fold lines. 1

Claims (1)

1. A CARRIER BLANK CONSTRUCTED FROM A SHEET MATERIAL BLANK COMPRISING TWO SUBSTANTIAL INDENTIAL BLANK PORTIONS INTEGRALLY JOINED ALONG A CENTRAL TRANSVERSE FOLD LINE, EACH BLANK PORTION INCLUDING A BOTTOM PANEL, A SIDE PANEL ADJOINING THE BOTTOM PANEL ALONG A TRANSVERSE FOLD LINE, AN END PANEL JOINED TO EACH SIDE PANEL ALONG EACH OF A FIRST PAIR OF LONGITUDINAL FOLD LINES, A FIRST TRANSVERSE SEVERANCE LINE EXTENDING BETWEEN THE FIRST PAIR OF LONGITUDINAL FOLD LINES AND DEFINING WITH THE FIRST TRANSVERSE FOLD LINE, THE MAXIMUM EFFECTIVE HEIGHT OF SAID SIDE PANEL, A SEVERANCE LINE TRAVERSING EACH ONE OF THE END PANELS AND TERMINATING AT A PAIR OF SHORT PARALLEL FOLD LINESD OF THE SIDE PANEL TO FORM A PAIR OF CROSS PARTITIONS FROM THE MATERIAL OF THE SIDE PANEL, A LONGITUDINALLY EXTENDING PARTITION FORMING FOLD LINE COOPERATIVE WITH ONE OF THE SEVERANCE LINES TRAVERSING ONE OF THE END PANELS TO DEFINE THEREWITH A PARTITION FORMING PANEL, AND A TRANSVERSE SERVEANCE LINE IN THE PARTITION FORMING PANEL FORMING A PARTITION MEMBER FROM THE PARTITION FORMING PANEL FOLDABLE FOR LOCATION BETWEEN THE CROSS PARTITIONS TO SEPARATE A PORTION OF MAXIMUM HEIGHT OF THE SIDE WALLS INTO TWO BOTTLE RECEIVING CELLS WHEN THE CARRIER BLANK IS RECETED OF FORM A CARRIER.
