CARMCOUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,556, dated April 218, 1885.
Application filed February 20, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BETSY ANN MAXEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in carcouplings, and has for its object to provide a suitable couplingin which the draw-head will be strong and capable of standing strong bumps and shocks, and the links will be easily applied with perfect safety to the handler.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my coupler. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line 00 as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line y y, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4: is a detail view of thelink.
My draw-head is formed in its forward end with two mortises, A A, cut from the side and opening at the side and end, as shown. These mortises are separated by an intermediate partition, B, and are closed at their upper and lower sides, all of which will be understood on reference to Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Through the upper and lower walls of each of these mortises I form pinholes O for the pins D. These pins may be of any suitable construction. By this construction of drawhead its end presents the form shown in Fig. 3, and it will be strong and capable of standing hard knocks, as when two adjacent draW-.
heads come together in meeting. The link E is of the usual elongated form, and it is provided with an arm, F, which extends from one side bar of the link at right angles to the direction of the elongation thereof. This arm or handle-bar, it will be seen, is arranged mid way the ends of the link, and it extends out sufficiently far to permit the manipulation of the link without the operator placing his hand between the draw-heads.
In operation I prefer to use two links, one on each side, as shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3; but manifestly my form of link could be used singly, in which case it might be desirable to dispense with the central partition, B, and arrange the pin-holes C centrally between the sides of the draw-head. It will also be understood my link might be em ployed with the ordinary draw-head, which is formed with a mouth or socket in its outer end, the handle being so arranged that it would project outward from and between the two draw-heads. This arrangement of the handle midway between the ends of the link has another advantage in that it secures an even balance of the link. and thereby renders its manipulation more easy and certain, as will be understood. By forming the mortises A from the sides of the draw-head the links may be inserted and removed when the drawheads are close together, whereas with the ordinary coupling the draw-heads have to be slightly separated in order to apply the links.
By'my invention, it will be noticed, the operator has at no time to go or place his hands between the draw-heads, whereby great loss of life and mangling of hands and arms will be prevented.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a car-coupler, and as an improved article of manufacture, an elongated link having a handle-bar projected from one of its arms midway its end and at right angles to the direction of elongation of the link, sub stantially as set forth.
2. In a car-coupler, the draw-head provided with mortises A A, open at the end and side of the draw-head and closed at top and bottom, said mortises being separated by an intermediate partition, and pinholes being formed through the top and bottom walls of each of the mortises, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with the draw-head pro- .vided with mortises open at the end and side, closed at top and bottom, separated by an intermediate partition, and having pin-holes formed through their top and bottom walls, links movable laterally into and out of said mortises and provided with rightangled arms, substantially as set forth.
