GAME COUNTER OR lNDlCATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,473, dated April 28, 1885.
Application flied January 28, 1855.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT HENRY MAE- '.IIN, of Peterborough, in the county of IvIillsborough, of the State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Game Counters or Indicators; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a transverse section, of an apparatus containing my invention, the nature of which is deiin d in the claims hereinafter presented. Fig. 3 is a front view of it as it appears without the cover or front plate of its case. Fig. I is a rear view of the said front plate, with its movable gates, to be described.
The article shown by such drawings is intended for keeping tally in games with cards or dominoes.
Within a suitablecase, A, provided with a removable front or cover, B, are three parallel cylindrical and horizontal rods, C, D, and E, that extend across the case from side to side thereof, each having upon and revolving freely on it a series of Iive wheels or narrow cylinders, each of which is provided at one end of it with a flange, a, that extends from and around its periphery. The upper row of these wheels or cylinders (marked E) has arranged on the circumference of each the letters of the alphabet from A to Y, inclusive, disposed at equal distances apart, and having a blank space between the first and last of such letters. Each wheel or cylinder of the middle row (marked G) is somewhat wider than either of those above and below it, and has marked upon its periphery two ranges of numbers,one of which is 0, l, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,10,1l,12,13, 14, l5, I6, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 2l, the other being O, 5, 10,15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, and a blank or colored space aside of the 2l of the right hand set, the zeros at the commencement ofthe two sets being opposite each other. In front of the flanged wheels or cylinders of the middle row, as well as in front of each of the other wheels or cylinders, is a sight window or opening, c, in the cover B, each ofthe said openings of the middle row of wheels being wider than those of either of the other. rows. rlhe middle row of sightopenings or windows is provided with a series of gates, (l, extending downward from a slide, c, adapted to move lengthwise of it upon the rear side of the cover B, a knob or handle, f, being extended from such slide through a slot, g, made transversely in the said cover. By taking hold of the knob and moving it to the right the gates may be caused to cover from view all the right-hand ranges of figures of the wheels of the middle row. So, by moving the knob the opposite way the gates may be caused to uncover the said righthand ranges, and to cover the left-hand ones ofthe wheels. Each wheel of the lowest set has on its circumference, at equal distances apart, theflgures O, l, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and I0. The lowest row is to indicate the number of games played, each wheel of it before commencing a game being turned so as to bring its zero at the sight-opening directly in front of such wheel. The liange of each wheel extends, as shown, through a slot, s, in the cover, there being such a slot for each wheel. Each set of wheels is intended for from two to five players, those of the uppermost set being to indicate the initial letter of the surnames of the players. Should there be two players only, two of the wheels should be turned so as to bring to their sight-openings the initial letters of the surnames of the players, the other wheels being turned so as to show no letters at the sight-openings. The two wheels next below, indicative of the names, should next be set wit-l1 their zero-points at the sightopenings of the wheels, one wheel serving for one and the other for the other player. As the game may proceed each of such wheels is to be turned to indicate from time to time the points made by its player, those for cards being shown by the right column and those for dominoes by the left column of figures. The case at its back is provided with atrough ing of the box or case provided with t'lie card- 15 holding receptacle or trough, as set forth, and with the set of revoluble flanged Wheels or cylinders, igured and lettered, as explained, and of the cover having the sight-openings and flange-receiving slots, and the series of 2o gates to the sight-openings of the middle set of such wheels, all being substantially as expla-ined.
