Description

Jan. 5, 1965 -uNG TAo sHENG TENT VENTILATING DEVICE Filed April 23, 1962 INVENTOR Hung Tao Sheng BY fmum ATTORNEY United States Patent O M 3,154,078 TENT VENTFJATWG DEX/'ECE Hung Tao Sheng, 748 Alexander St. SE., Grand Rapids, Mich. Filed Apr. 23, 1962, Ser. Ne. 159,571 1 Ciaim. (Ci. 8--3'7) The present invention relates to a tent ventilating device.
The primary objects-of the invention are to provide a tent ventilating device which can quickly and easily be installed in any tent wall and in any desired location on said Wall; to provide such a tent ventilating device which permits free circulation of air therethrough while at the same time preventing the entry of rain or insects into the tent; and in general vto provide such a tent ventilating device which is efficient in use, which can economically be molded of plastic material or the like, and which is attractive in appearance.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of an umbrellatype tent constructed of canvas or other flexible material and having a tent ventilating device according to this invention installed in a Side Wall thereof;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged, vertical Sectional view of the new device taken on line 2 -2 of FlGURE l, the side wall of the tent being here shown fragnentarily;
FIGURE 3 is a front elevational view of the same, as seen from outside the tent;
FGURE 4 is a rear elevational View of the device per se; and
FIGURE 5 is a bottom plan View of the same.
Referring now in detail to this drawing, the tent ventilating device there illustrated comprises a rigid body generally designated which may desirably be made of a molded plastic material, although other materials might be found suitable. The body 10 comprises a front wall 11 and a rear wall 12 which taper upwardly, said front and rear walls being connected at their sides and being bowed apart between their sides to provide an air passage between the open bottom 13 of the device and the open top 14 thereof.
The front Wall 11 of the device extends upwardly a considerable distance beyond the rear wall 12 thereof, and the upper part of said front wall 11 is tapered upwardly as shown to facilitate its insertion through a slit 15 made in the tentis side wall 16, upwardly from the outside of the tent and into the interior thereof. The upper part of the front wall 11 is provided with an aperture 17 therethrough, and any suitable type of fastening means such lhh Paterted Jan. 5, 19%5 ICC as the brad 18 here shown may be inserted through the aperture 17 and through the tent wall 16 above the slot 15 for securing the device to the tent wall.
The body lil of the device is here shown so molded as to provide three abutments 19 spaced slightly inwardly from the open bottom 13 of the device. A screen 20 is pressed inwardly against said abutments and may if desired be secured in place by means of a suitable adhesive.
it will be seen that the new tent ventilating device may very quickly and easily be installed in a flexible tent wall at any desired location, and that when installed as shown the front wall 11 of the device flexes the material of the tent above the slit 15 outwardly and the rear Wall 12 fiexes the material of the tent below the slit 15 inwardly thus to maintain said slit in open condition. The device serves to provide ventilation, and to prevent entry of rain into the tent. The screen 2d) effectively serves to prevent entry of insects into the tent.
While but one specific embodiment of the invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details thereof may be altered or omitted Without departing from the spirit of the invention `as the same is defined by the following claim.
I claim: I
A device for ventilating a tent constructed of canvas or other ilexble material, comprising: a rigid molded plastic body of upwardly tapering form having a front wall and a rear wall,'said walls being connected at their sides and being bowed apart between the sides to provide an air passage between the open bottom and the open top of said rigid body, said front wall extending upwardly beyond the rear wall and having its upper part adapted for insertion through a slit in a tent Wall upwardly from the outside of the tent to the interior thereof whereby the front wall of the device flexes the material of the tent above said slit outwardly and the rear Wall of the device ileXes the material of the tent below said slit inwardly thus to maintain the slit in open condition, said upper part of the front wall of the device having an aperture therethrough to facilitate its attachment to the inside of the tent wall above the slit therethrough, and a screen across the open bottom of said body.
