(Cl. 220-27 This invention relates in general to pressurized receptacles and in particular to a frangible closure for the open end of a pressurized receptacle together with an upstanding lip on the closure member to facilitate drinking directly fnom the receptacle.
Pressurized receptacles for carbonated beverages and the like, as presently used, require puncturing by some form of opening device which must be kept readily available for use. Furthermore, it is not easy to drink the contents of receptacles after puncturing one end inasmuch as there is no drinking lip on the receptacle.
Therefore, it is one object of my invention to provide a receptacle having a frangible closure comprising an apertured closure member received by an open end of the receptacle, a second .apertured closure member in juxtaposition to the first mentioned closure member, and a rupturable' diaphragm between the closure members, the apertured closure members being normally in nonregistering relation, the second mentioned closure member being rotatable to aperture registering position at which time the pressure within the receptacle will force the rupturable diaphragm outwardly in the registering apertures, diaphragm rupturing means being located in the apertures of the second mentioned apertured closure member and adapted to rupture the portion of the diaphragm projecting into the apertures.
Another object of my invention is to provide a drinking lip projecting from the second mentioned closure member for ease in drinking the contents of the receptacle directly therefrom.
One more object of my invention is to provide a modified form of a frangible closure in which a flanged closure member is received by an open end of a receptacle, a flanged rupturable diaphragm is placed over the closure member, and a second closure member is placed over the diaphragm, a flanged locking ring being placed over the second mentioned closure member, the diaphragm, and the first mentiond closure member, the flanges on the flanged members being contiguous and in sealed relation with the receptacle, the closure members being provided with registerable apertures, the second mentioned closure member being rotatable to bring the apertures into registration when desired for rupturing the diaphragm.
Other objects and advantages as well as the COHSiIUlC- tion and manner of use of my invention will be better understood by reference to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is an exploded view of the receptacle and the various parts which go to make up the friable closure, parts being broken away to better illustrate certain other parts.
FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the closure end of the receptacle.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the action of the diaphragm rupturing means, the apertures being in registration.
.FIG. 4 is a fragmentary cross sectional view of another form of my invention with apertures in nonregistering position. i
Referring now the drawing by numerals of reference,
3,150,3fl9 Patented Dec. 8, 1964 materials such as plastics or the like. The body 1 is provided with opposite open ends 2 and '3, one end later being sealed in the conventional manner after the contents are placed in the can or receptacle.
The other end, 2 for example, receives a closure member 4, adapted to rest against the receptacle body edge 2. This closure member may be provided with apertures 5, preferably oppositely disposed as shown, although the number, form and position of the apertures may vary with varying results in the use of the receptacle. It may be found preferable also, because the apertures must be formed therein, to make the closure member of aluminum or some other material which will be unatlected by oxidation due to the liquids in the receptacle.
A rupturable diaphragm 6 which may be of any suitable material, metallic or otherwise, is placed in juxtaposition withthe closure member 4. A second closure member 7, of smaller diameter than the diaphragm 6 or closure member a and positioned on the diaphragm 6, is provided with apertures 8 corresponding to the apertures 5 in the first mentioned closure member 4. This tures 8, the use of said rupturing means being described hereinafter.
Both closure members with the intermediate diaphragm are secured in position by a locking ring llprovided with annular flange 12 and central opening 13 to clear the upstanding drinking flange 9. The locking ring 11 also has an offset portion 14 in which is positioned the outer peripheral portion of the closure member 7. The locking ring 11 is applied with precisely the correct pressure and the annular flange 12 is suitably secured to the receptacle body 1 to hold closure members 4 and 7 with the intermediate diaphragm 6 in sealing relation with said body 1, and permitting rotative movement of the closure member 7 with drinking flange 9 whereby apertures 8 may be brought into registration with apertures 5 at which time the pressure in the receptacle from the carbonation will force the diaphragm into the apertures 8 and in the path of the rupturing means 10, said rupturing means being adapted to cut the diaphragm away at the apertures whereby the contents of the receptacle may be poured into a glass or may be partaken of directly from the receptacle by use of the upstanding flange 9.
With the frangible closure assembly completed the closure member 7 is positioned with the apertures 5 and 8 in nonregistration and the receptacle is filled and sealed at the open end 3. Where beverages without carbonation are canned it is desirable to supply sufficient internal pressure to force the diaphragm into apertures 8 for rupturing same by rotation of the closure member 7 with its diaphragm rupturing means It The construction thus far described provides a leak proof, pressure tight receptacle, and after vending or dispensing can be quickly opened and its contents partaken of Without the need of a special opening device or a glass to receive the contents. A slight turning motion of the closure member 7 ruptures the diaphragm 6 at the aper tures 5 and 8 and the contents of the receptacle can be partaken of. Later, if all of the contents are not used, the closure member 7 may be again partially rotated and although, with the diaphragm ruptured, a perfect seal is not obtained, yet the contents of the receptacle will not be spilled as long as the receptacle is kept upright.
In a modified form of my invention shown in FIG. 4,
the receptacle body 1 is supplied with a closure member 4 having peripheral flange 4", suitable apertures 5' being provided as in the first form described, The rupturable'dia'phragnffi has annular flanged" adapted'to fit over flange 4'. A closure member 7"has apertures 8, cutting member 16' positioned in the apertures, and
upwardly projecting handle 7". A locking ring 1'i"has annular fla'nge l2" and a central opening 33" which clears the apertures' fl'a portion 14' of the locking ring 11 being oifset as shown to receive the outer peripheral portion of the closure member 7',
When assembled, the closure members 4' and 7' receivethe rupturable diaphragm 6 between them and are held in place bythe locking memberll'. 6", and '12 are, by any suitable method, forced into Flanges 4",
sealing position against the body 1 of the receptacle with sufficient'pressure to permit rotative'movement of the closure member 7' and yet maintain a leakproof and will force a rupturable diaphragm into registering aperturcs with movement of a rotary closure member causing rupture of the diaphragm to permit the contents of the receptacle to be partaken of. I have further provided a drinking ring or lip to facilitate drinking directly from the receptacle. The need for a device 'to open the receptacle and a separate glass to receive the'contents of the receptacle are eliminated. v
The receptacle with its frangible closure is extremely simple in construction and use and may employnormal methods'for filling and sealing. 7
Obviously, changes in form, proportion" and details -of-construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention and I reserve all rights 'to such changes as come within the scope of these specifications 'and'the claims which follow What I claim as new and desire to secure'by.
