Description
Nov. 24, 1964 M. L. CHANKO CONVERSION OF TWIN BEDS TO A DOUBLE BED Filed Oct. 22, 1963 INVENTOR. MORTIMER L. C/IAAI/(O @WBW ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,157,889 CONVERSIGN 0F TWEN REDS TO A DUUBLE BED Mortimer L. (Jhanko, 250 Kingsiand Terrace, South Orange, NJ. Filed Get. 22, B63, Ser. No, 318,4)3'7 2 Claims. ((31. --352) The invention herein disclosed relates to the converting of twin beds into a double bed and the objects of the invention primarily are to provide simple and practical means for enabling a pair of twin beds to be combined and used as a full size double bed.
Further, special objects of the invention are to accomplish this at low cost and with means easy to apply and remove and which when not in use may be stored in compact form.
Other desirable objects accomplished by the invention and the novel features through which the purposes of the invention are attained are set forth and will appear in the course of the following specification.
The drawing accompanying and forming part of the specification illustrates a present practical embodiment of the invention. The actual form of the invention however may be modified and changed Within the intent and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.
FIG. 1 in the drawing is a plan view of the flexible strip which is used to bridge the gap between adjoining twin beds.
FIG. 2 is a side elevation; and
FIG. 3 is an end view of the bridging strip.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged cross sectional detail on the plane of line 4-4 of FIG. 1, illustrating the porous elastic character of the bridge strip.
FIG. 5 is an end view illustrating diagrammatically in broken lines how the bridge strip lies substantially flush on adjoining mattresses of the beds with the dependent mid portion filling in space between adjoining mattresses.
FIG. 6 is a perspective view illustrating the invention combined and in use with twin beds.
FIG. 7 is a perspective view showing the strip detached and rolled into a compact mass for shipment or storage.
As shown in the several views the invention comprises a flat strip 10 of firm, flexible, porous, elastic material, such as foam rubber or polyurethane, wide enough to bridge and overlap opposed mattresses 11, 12 of adjoining twin beds 13, 14 in close substantially abutting side by side relation and having a central dependent rib 15 thickened to wedge into the gap 16 which would normally be present between such beds.
As shown in FIG. 5, the strip is thin enough to lie substantially flush with the mattresses and the thickened mid portion, particularly after any weight has been put upon it, holds the strip firmly in place, not adding any material protuberance to the mattresses or bed clothes.
The compressible porous material has a clinging eifect assisting in holding the device in place.
The foam rubber strip is light in weight and easily handled for putting it in place or removing it,
The complete flexibility of the strip enables it to be rolled into a small compact package, such as shown in FIG. 7, for shipment or storage purposes.
The strip usually is made the full length of the twin beds, as shown in FIG. 6, so as to form a bridge the full length of the converted double bed structure.
The strip of foam rubber is light in weight and relatively inexpensive. It is waterproof and easily kept clean and sanitary.
What is claimed is:
1. A device for transforming a pair of twin beds into one bed comprising:
a strip of flexible foamed material of a width to bridge the space between, and overlap the adjacent marginal top surfaces of mattresses of twin beds in closely adjoining substantially abutting relation;
a bottom, generally rectangular, central, dependent rib on the strip engageable between opposed adjoining vertical sides of the mattresses for positioning the strip as a bridge across a space between the mattresses, said rib being relatively thick and frictionally engageable between the vertical sides of the mattresses to hold the strip in flat engagement with the adjacent marginal top surfaces of the mattresses.
2. A device for converting twin beds into one double bed comprising:
a relatively thin strip of flexible, porous, foamed material of a width to bridge the space between and overlap the adjacent marginal top surfaces of mattresses of twin beds in closely adjoining substantially abutting relation;
a bottom, generally rectangular, central, dependent rib,
of the same material, on the strip engageable between opposed adjoining vertical sides of the mattresses for positioning the strip as a bridge across a space between the amttresses, said rib being relatively thick so as to fit into the gap between the twin beds and be frictionally engageable between the vertical sides of the mattresses to hold the strip in flat engagement with the adjacent marginal top surfaces of the mattresses.
