GRAIN-MEASURING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,682, dated April 14, 1885.
Application filed December 19, 1384. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that'we, Ormn P. WAGNER. and Oscar. E. WAGNER, both of Pontiac, in the county of Livingston andState of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Measuring Apparatus, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved apparatus for automatically measuring grain or other cereals, or other powdered or granulated material.
The invention consists in the combination, with a vessel having a removable bottom, of a revolving vessel having gates hinged on its bottom, a cam for operating the movable bottom of the fixed vessel, a device for operating the cam from the shaftof the revolving vessel, and a rod connected with the gates on the bottom of the revolving vessel and with the device for throwing the cam-shaft and the shaft of the revolving vessel in and out of gear.
The invention also consists in parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional eleva tion of our improved measuring apparatus. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line at m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a face view of the cam for holding the gate closed. Fig. 4c is an inverted plan view of the ratchet-wheel. Fig. 5 is a face view of the cam for opening the bottom of the apparatus.
A vertical shaft, A, is jonrnaled in an upright frame, B, and its cross-piece O, and the said shaft has a belt-pulley,D, on its upper end, around which a driving-belt. D,-passes; or the said shaft may be revolved by any other suitable means. a A cylindrical vessel, E, open at the top, is secured to an inverted crutch or stirrup, E, on the lower end of the shaft A, the lower part of the said shaft being made hollow.
The vessel E is provided in its bottom with two openings opposite each other and extending from the middle to the rim, said openings being adapted to be closed by downwardlyswinging gates F, each secured to a rod, f,
pivoted at the rim of the vessel and at the middle, each rod being provided at its inner end with a crank, g, on the end of which a roller or pin, 71 is provided, the two rollers passing into a slot, Z, in a cross-piece, m, formed on the lower end of a rod, 0, projecting through the lower hollow part of the shaft A, and having its upper end connected with a sleeve, G, arranged to slide vertically on the shaft A, the shaft A being slotted to permit of connect ing the rod 0 with the sleeve G. A pocket, 1), is formed on the under side of the bottom of the vessel E, into which pocket the crankshafts y can swing. The lower part of the cylindrical vessel E is held loosely in the up per end of a cylindrical vessel, H, having a swinging bottom, H, secured to rods or levers I I, pivoted at b on the frame B. The rod I is provided at its extended upper end with a roller or pin, a, projecting into the groove 1) of a cam-wheel, J, mounted rigidly on one end of a horizontal shaft, K, journaled in the frame B, and on the inner end of which a bevel cog-wheel, L, is mounted rigidly, which engages with a bevel cog-wheel, M, mounted loosely upon the vertical shaft A directly above a ratchet-wheel, N, rigidly mounted on the shaft A.
On the under side of the cog-wheel M an angular pawl-lever, O, is pivoted, which is adapted to engage with the teeth of the ratchetwheel N, against which it is pressed by a spring, 1?, on the under side of the wheel M. On the back of the cog-wheel L a cama pocket, It, and into the said groove aroller, S, projects from a rod, T, arranged to slide vertically on an upright of the frame, and provided with a log, V. The rod '1 is connected with the sliding collar G.

The operation is as follows: The shaft A and the vessel E on the same are revolved in the direction of the arrow at, Fig. 2, and the grain drops from the spout W into the vessel E, and from the same into the vessel H, the gates F being swung down. As long as the gates are swung down, the rod T is pulled down, and the lug V, resting against the pawl-lever 0, disco gages the same from the groove, Q, is formed, which is provided with The grain is conducted into the apparatus ratchet-wheel N, thus preventing the ratchetwheel from revolving the cog-wheel M, and consequently the cog-wheel L and the shaft K are stationary. When the vessel H is full,the material in the said vessel forces the gates F upward, thereby closing the gates and preventing the grain from passing from the vessel E into the Vessel H. As the gates F are forced upward, the crank-shafts g are turned upward and push upward the rod 0, which, acting on the sleeve G, forces the rod T upward, whereby the lug V is disengaged from the pawl-lever O, which is thrown by the spring P against the ratchet-wheel N, whereby the cogwheel M is locked to the ratchet-wheel N and revolved with the same. The wheel Mrevolves the wheel L, the shaft K, and the cam-wheel J, which latter wheel swings the rod I on its pivot, thus moving the bottom H of the vessel H sid'ewise, and permitting the grain to run out at the lower end of the said vessel. By the upward movement of the rod T the roller S is moved out of the pocket B into the groove Q, whereby the gates F are held raised orclosed. When the shaft K completes its revolution, the rods I I are swung back and close the bottom of the vessel H, and the roller S drops into the pocket R, the gates F swing down, and the lug V, engaging with the lever Q,disengages the same from the ratchet-wheel N, whereby the shaft K and the parts on the same are stopped. The vessel H is again filled and then discharged, and'so on. Spring-strips s are secured on those edges of the openings against which the free edges of the gates swing, and the said edges project slightly beyond the side edge of the openin g and downward,so that when the gates are swung up and closed they rest against the edges of the said springs,whereby a close and tight joint is formed. We have described and shown two gates; but it is evident that one may be used.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a measuring apparatus, the combination, with a revolving vessel having one or more gates in its bottom, of a fixed vessel in which the above-mentioned vessel revolves,
substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a measuring'apparatus, the combination, with a revolving vessel having one or more gates in its bottom, of a fixed vessel in which the other vessel revolves, the said fixed vessel having a removable bottom or gate, and of devices for automatically opening the bottom of the-fixed vessel from the gate or gates in the upper vessel by the closing of the said gate or gates, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a measuring apparatus, the combination, with the revolving vessel E, having gates F in"'its*bottom, and the fixed vessel H, havingiaremovable bottom, H, of the shaft K,
operated from the shaft A, revolving the vessel E, and a rod connected with the gates F and serving to throw the shaft K in and out of gear with the shaft A, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a measuring apparatus, the combination, with the shaft A and the vesselE on thesame, of the gates F in the bottom of the vessel E, the vesselH,having a removable bottom, H, the rods I I, connected with the bottom H, the shaft K, the cam-wheel J the bevel cog-wheel L on the shaft K, the bevel cog-wheel M on the shaft A, the ratchet-wheel N, the pawl-lever O, the rods T 0, connected with the gates F, and the lug V on the rod T, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. In a measuring apparatus, the combination, with the shaft A and a vessel on the same, of the cog-wheel M, loosely mounted on the shaft A, the ratchet-wheel N, rigidly mounted on the shaft A, the pawl-lever O, pivoted on the wheel M, the cog-wheel L, having a cam-groove, Q, the shaft K, the rod 0, connected with the gates F in the bottom of the vessel E, the lugV on the rod T, the roller S on the rod T and projecting into the groove Q, and of a vessel arranged below the vessel E and having a removable bottom connected with the rods I I and operated from a cam on the shaft K, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. In a measuring apparatus, the combination, with the vessel H, having removable bottom H, of the revolving vessel E, provided with the hinged gates F, having crank-arms g, the shaft A, the rod 0, passing through the said shaft, and provided with a slotted crosspiece on its lower end, into which cross-piece the pins or rollers on the cranks g pass, and of devices for throwing the shaftAin and out of gear with the wheels for operating the bottom'H, said devices being operated from the gates F by means of the said rod 0, substantially as herein shown and described.
7. In a measuring apparatus, the combina-' tion, with the vessel H, having gate H, of the revolving vessel E, having gates F, the downwardly-projecting pocket 19, the shaft A, having a crutch or stirrup on its lower end, the rod 0, arranged to slide in the shaft A, and provided at its lower end with a slotted crosspiece, and the cranks formed on the ends of the pivot-rods of the gates F, and provided with pins projecting into the slotted crosspiece on the lower end of the rod 0, and of devices for throwing the shaft A in and out of gear with the wheels for operating the gate H, substantially as herein shown and described.

In a measuring apparatus, the combination, with the vessel H, of the revolving vessel E, provided with the downwardly-swing ing gates F, devices for operating the said gates, and of the spring-strips s, secured on the upper surface of the bottom of the vessel A and projecting over those edges against whichthe free edges of the gates swing, sub stantially as herein shown and described.
