(Cl. 153-32) This invention relates to a novel and useful parafiin scraper and to a tool and method for applying the paraffin scraper to a length of sucker rod.
This invention is an improvement over my application U.S. Serial No. 557,481 filed January 5, 1956 and now abandoned.
The parafiin scraper of the instant invention comprises a blade like member which is spirally twisted and is provided on its opposite ends with laterally directed tab portions. The tab portions project from the same side of the blade like member and the tab portions are each preformed into a generally C-shaped cross-sectional formation for loose embracement of a length of sucker rod section. The spirally twisted blade is disposed about a length of sucker rod and the tab portions carried by the opposite ends of the blade like member are each in turn engaged between the coacting jaws of a pneumatic vise and urged into tight frictional and radially compressing engagement with the sucker rod section. Then, after the free end of each tab portion has been bent about the sucker rod section and disposed in close end abutting relation with the end of the corresponding tab portion which is secured to the blade like strip, the opposite end portions of the tab portions are welded together while a pneumatic vise maintains the tab portion in tight radially compressing engagement with the rod section. Then, after the weld has cooled, the rod section and paraffin remover may be removed from engagement with the vise. With both ends of the blade like parafiin remover secured to longitudinally spaced portions of a length of sucker rod, the paraffin remover is rigidly secured to the sucker rod against rotational longitudinal movement relative to the sucker rod section and the parafiin remover has been welded to itself and not directly to the sucker rod nor any element formed integrally therewith which might cause fatigue of the metal from which the sucker rod is formed from the extreme heat necessary to weld a member directly to the sucker rod.
By securing the parafiin remover to a sucker rod section in this manner, the opposite ends of the tab portions of the paraffin remover may be slightly spaced apart prior .to welding and welded to each other by the arc welding process. By arc welding the very slightly spaced opposite ends of each tab portion together, the heat of the arc weld will slightly expand the tab portions and move them into actual end abutting relation. Then, as the heat of the arc weld cools, the tab portions will shrink slightly and grip the sucker rod section even more tightly than would be possible by means of the pneumatic vise by which the tab portions of the parafiin scraper were bent about the rod section. Accordingly, it may be seen that in this manner the paramn scraper may be rigidly secured to a sucker rod and without subjecting the sucker rod to extreme heat which could cause metal fatigue in the sucker rod.
The main object of this invention is to provide a paraffin scraper constructed in a manner whereby it may be rigidly secured to a length of sucker rod by a welding process and in a manner which will not subject the rod section to extreme temperatures.
A further object of this invention, in accordance with the immediately preceding object, is to provide a pair of vise jaw member adapters specifically designed for securement to the coacting jaws of a vise and to tightly bend a strip like tab portion of the parafiin scraper about the sucker rod section to which the parafiin scraper issecured.
3,155,286 Patented Nov. 10, 1964 ice Still another object of this invention is to provide an assembly jig for supporting a sucker rod section and the paraffin scraper to be secured thereto in correct positions relative to the jaws of a pneumatic vise whereby paraf fin scrapers may be more readily secured to sucker rod sections.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a parafiin scraper in accordance with the preceding objects which may be readily formed of flat stock material.
Another object of this invention is to provide a portable jig and tool assembly which may be utilized to secure a paraflin scraper of the instant invention to sucker rod sections in accordance with the method of the instant invention.
A final object to be specifically enumerated herein is to provide a paraflin scraper in accordance with the preceding objects which will conform to conventional forms of manufacture, be of simple construction and easy to use so as to provide a device that will be economically feasible, long lasting and relatively trouble free in operation.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of the tool and jig assembly of the instant invention which is specifically adapted to carry out the method of the instant invention and to apply the parafiin scraper of the instant invention to sucker rod sections;

FIGURE 7 is a fragmentary sectional view similar to that of FIGURE 6 but showing the paraflin scraper secured to a sucker rod section in accordance with the method of the instant invention and with the adapter members of the vise still engaged with the paraffin scraper;

FIGURE 12 is a fragmentary perspective view of a sucker rod section shown with a pair of the paraflin Referring now more specifically to the drawings the numeral generally designates a tool and jig apparatus which includes a main frame generally referred to by the reference numeral 12 having longitudinal side runners 14 and 16 and a plurality of transversely extending brace members 18. The runners 14 and 16 are provided in order that the main frame 12 may he slid from one location to another over the ground. In addition, it will be noted that the runners 14 and 16 include slotted mounting brackets 20 whereby the main frame 12 may be secured to the load bed generally referred to by the reference numeral 22 of a vehicle referred to in general by the reference numeral 24 by means of suitable fasteners 26.
The tool and jig apparatus 10 includes a pneumatic vise assembly generally referred to by the reference numeral 28 which is supported by means of a support platform 30 secured between adjacent brace members 155. The pneumatic vise is of conventional construction and is similar to that covered in US. Patent No. 2,127,008.
A portable arc welding and air compressor unit generally referred to by the reference numeral 32 is secured to the tool and jig assembly 10 and includes air pressure lines 34 and 36 for supplying a source of compressed air to the pneumatic vise 28. A control valve 38 is disposed in the line 36 and may be actuated to close the jaws 40 and 42 of the pneumatic vise 28 when desired.
It will be noted that the arc welding and air compressing unit 32 includes a generator generally referred to by the reference numeral 44 and that a pair of flexible conductors 46 and 48 extend from the generator 44 and may be utilized for arc welding purposes. However, the arc welding and air compressor unit 32 may be of conventional design and thus does not itself form a part of the instant invention.
The main frame 12 includes a pair of upstanding and extensible standards each generally referred to by the reference numeral 50 and a single upstanding standard generally referred to by the reference numeral 52. Each of the standards 50 and 52 includes a rigid outer tubular member 54 in which there is telescopically engaged an upper extensible member 56. The upper extensible members 56 of the uprights 50 have an upwardly opening V-shaped trough 58 secured to their upper ends and a bridging trough or cradle 60 has its opposite end supported by the trough 58. An upwardly opening and V- shaped cradle 62 is secured to the V-shaped trough 64 carried by the extensible member 56 of the upright 52 and it will be noted that the cradles 60 and 62 are longitudinally aligned and are disposed along a line passing between the jaws 4t and 42 of the vise. Each of the tubular members 54 has a setscrew 66 threadedly engaged therewith for maintaining the corresponding extensible member 56 in adjusted extended position. Accordingly, it will be seen that the cradles 60 and 62 may be horizontally aligned.
With attention now directed to FIGURES 5 through 10 of the drawings it will be seen a pair of vise jaw member adapters generally referred to by the reference numerals 70 and 72. Each of the adapters 70 and 72 includes a mounting plate 74 which is apertured as at 76 for the reception of fasteners 78 that are utilized to secure the mounting plates 74 to the jaw members 40 and 42. It will be noted that the mounting plates 74 are secured to corresponding sides of the jaw members 40 and 42 and that each of the mounting plates 74 has an abutment block generally referred to by the reference numeral 80 secured thereto.
Fasteners 84 are secured through the apertures 82 and in the corresponding threaded blind bores 86 formed in the abutment blocks 80 for securing the abutment blocks 80 to the mounting plates 74.
The upstanding confronting faces of the mounting blocks 80 are provided with mating semi-circular recesses 88 and vertically extending grooves 90 which communicats each of the recesses 88 with the upper surface of the corresponding abutment block 80. The face of each abutment block 80 remote from the recess 88 is substantially planar and is designated by the reference numeral 92. The planar faces 92 are disposed in surface to surface abutting relation with the working faces of the jaw members 46 and 42 and it will be noted that one of the abutment blocks 80 includes an outwardly opening recess 94 which slidably receives an elongated projection 96 carried by the other abutment block. In this manner, the abutment blocks 80 may be moved toward engagement with each other with the projection 96 telescopingly received within the recess 94 thereby assuring that the abutment blocks will mate perfectly with each other.
With attention now directed to FIGURES 57 and 11'l2, it will be seen that the parafiin scraper of the instant invention is generally referred to by the reference numeral 100 and includes an elongated knife-like strip 102 including opposite edge portions 104 and 106. The strip 102 is coiled and lies in a slowly advancing spiral path of approximately 180. As can best be seen in FIGURE 12 of the drawings the edge 104 is disposed adjacent the sucker rod section 108. The strip 102 is provided with a pair of opposite end tab portions and 112 which each project outwardly from the side edge 104 and includes an inner end portion 114 and an outer free end portion 116. With attention now directed more specifically to FIGURES 5 through 7 of the drawings it will be noted that the parafiin scraper 100 is first positioned about the sucker rod section 108 with the preformed C-shaped tab portions 112 and 114 loosely embracing the rod section 103. Then, one of the tab portions is disposed between the confronting semi-cylindrical recesses 88 of the adapters 30 and the jaws 40 and 42 of the vise are moved toward each other as can best be seen in FIGURES 6 and 7 of the drawings to urge the free end of the tab portion disposed between the adapters 80 in a closed position tightly radially compressing the rod section 103 and with its free end 116 disposed in slightly spaced relation relative to its base end 114. Then, the welding rod 118 which may be electrically connected to one of the conductors 46 and 48 while the other is electrically connected to the vise 28 is inserted in the opening formed between the adapters 80 by means of the grooves 90. In this matter, the opposite ends of each tab portion may be welded together and it will be noted that the heat of the welding process is directed almost entirely to the opposite ends of the tab portions thereby preventing the sucker rod section 103 from being subjected to extreme heat. Additionally, the heat of the welding process will slightly elongate the tab portion being welded and accordingly the free end 116 thereof will be moved into tight frictional engagement with the end 114 thereof. Then, while the tab portion is being tightly gripped by the adapters 80, the weld 120 will cool and thus cause the tab portion which has been welded to slightly contract thereby enabling that tab portion to even more tightly frictionally engage and radially compress the rod section 108.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A pair of vise jaw member adapters for clamping a strap like tab about a rod with the tab radially compressing the rod and the opposite ends thereof disposed in end abutting relation and exposed for welding together, said vise jaw adapters each comprising a mounting plate adapted to be secured to one side face of a vise jaw member, an upright abutment block mounted on each of said mounting plates and projecting laterally to one side of the corresponding plate and including an upstanding generally planar face adapted to'be disposed in surface to surface abutting relation with the working face of the jaw member to which it is secured, the upstanding side of one of said abutment blocks remote from its planar face including an outwardly opening recess and the corresponding side of the other abutment member. including an elongated outwardly projecting member slidabl'y receivable in said recess, each of said sides remote from the corresponding planar face also including a semi-cylindrical recess adapted to clampingly engage one-half of said tab about a corresponding portion of said rod. 7
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein one of said sides includes an outwardly opening groove extending from the corresponding semi-cylindrical recess to the upper extremity of the corresponding abutment block.
3. In combination with a vise having jaw members movable in a horizontal plane relative to each other, a pair of elevated support members disposed along a line extending horizontally between said jaw members and disposed at substantially right angles to the line of movement of said jaws, said support members including means for vertical adjustment relative to said jaws, said support members including cradle means carried by the upper ends of said support standards and adapted to support a rod section passing between said jaws, said vise jaw members having opposing upstanding work faces, a pair of vise jaw member adapters each comprising a mounting plate secured to one side face of the corresponding vise jaw member, and upright abutment blocks mounted on each of said mounting plates and projecting laterally to one side thereof and including an upstanding generally planar face disposed in surface to surface abutting rela tion with the working face of the corresponding jaw memher, the upstanding side of one of said abutment blocks remote from its planar face including an outwardly open ing recess and the corresponding side of the other abutment member including an elongated outwardly projecting member slidably receivable in said recess, each of sadi sides remote from the corresponding planar faces also including a semi-cylindrical recess adapted to clampingly engage one-half of a strap like tab encircled about a rod like member.
4. The combination of claim 3 wherein said vise is of the pneumatic type and is mounted on a portable frame together with said standards.

1. A PAIR OF VISE JAW MEMBER ADAPTERS FOR CLAMPING A STRAP LIKE TAB ABOUT A ROD WITH THE TAB RADIALLY COMPRESSING THE ROD AND THE OPPOSITE ENDS THEREOF DISPOSED IN END ABUTTING RELATION AND EXPOSED FOR WELDING TOGETHER, SAID VISE JAW ADAPTERS EACH COMPRISING A MOUNTING PLATE ADAPTED TO BE SECURED TO ONE SIDE FACE OF A VISE JAW MEMBER, AN UPRIGHT ABUTMENT BLOCK MOUNTED ON EACH OF SAID MOUNTING PLATES AND PROJECTING LATERALLY TO ONE SIDE OF THE CORRESPONDING PLATE AND INCLUDING AN UPSTANDING GENERALLY PLANAR FACE ADAPTED TO BE DISPOSED IN SURFACE TO SURFACE ABUTTING RELATION WITH THE WORKING FACE OF THE JAW MEMBER TO WHICH IT IS SECURED, THE UPSTANDING SIDE OF ONE OF SAID ABUTMENT BLOCKS REMOTE FROM ITS PLANAR FACE INCLUDING AN OUTWARDLY OPENING RECESS AND THE CORRESPONDING SIDE OF THE OTHER ABUTMENT MEMBER INCLUDING AN ELONGATED OUTWARDLY PROJECTING MEMBER SLIDABLY RECEIVABLE IN SAID RECESS, EACH OF SAID SIDES REMOTE FROM THE CORRESPONDING PLANAR FACE ALSO INCLUDING A SEMI-CYLINDRICAL RECESS ADAPTED TO CLAMPINGLY ENGAGE ONE-HALF OF SAID TAB ABOUT A CORRESPONDING PORTION OF SAID ROD.
