SHOEMAKER CLAMP.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 31,539, dated February 26, 1861.
To all whom'fit may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER HANES, of Edina, in the county of Knox and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Shoemakers Clamp; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1. is a side view of the improved clamp showing the lever and movable jaw in two positions. F ig. 2. is a back view of the clamp.

This invention is a novel improvement in clamps, which are used by shoemakers in closing or stitching up boot legs, or the edges of two pieces of leather for any purpose,- for holdin the edges of leather firmly together whi e they are stitched with the hand.
The nature of my invention consists in jointing one of the clamping jaws to the fixed jaw, and operating this movable jaw by means of a lever having its fulcrum in the fixed jaw.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings A, is a jaw which is prolonged into the shank portion A; and B, is a jaw which is hinged to a block a, that is secured at or near the middle, inside, of the jaw A. I thus have a fixed and a movable jaw, one of which has a shank, which projects from its lower end and, when the instrument is used, rests on the floor between the knees of the workman. The jaws A, and B, are curved in the usual manner and made of any suitable tough wood.
D, is va metal bearing which is secured toA the lower end of the curved jaw A, and projecting out under the end of jaw B, it receives a pulley b, around which pulley passes a band C, made of leather or other suitable material one end of which is firmlyl secured to the lower end of movable jaw B, and the other end is secured to the curved end of lever G. Lever G may be made as long as is found convenientrin operating the instrument; the longer the lever is, the better. This llever I passes through a mortise cut through the portion A, and it is ivoted to this portion A.4 Now by depressing the longer arm of this lever the band C, will draw the upper end of the movable jaw B, up hard against the end of jaw A. To open these jaws again a cord or band g, is attaehed to the end of the movable jaw and to the lever the opposite side of its fulcrum, so that by raising the lever the jaws will open at their u per end. The lever G, is operated by the eg of the lworkman and the amount of force to be applied is under his control. The clamp can be immediately removed from the leather by removing the leg from the lever, and the leather can be adjusted to any position required with perfect ease, the delay and labor of opening clamps, hitherto made, with the hand is avoided.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettersv Patent is- The arrangement of the arm or bearing D, roller` b and band C, with thejaws A, B, and lever G as herein shown and described.
