Claims. (Cl. 87-7) This invention relates to improvements in braid for rugs.

It is an object of my invention to provide braid, for rugs, of larger width and of an elegant pattern through a more reasonable method other than the conventional method of winding the wrapping yarns in a figure-eight form around the two filling cores arranged parallel to each other to cover the filling cores.

Another important object is to provide braid of a larger width in the desired colors or patterns, which keeps different colors on both sides or substantially bilateral symmetry.

A further object is to provide braid in which the respective components are positively interlocked with each other.

According to the invention, the braid comprises at least one center core material in the form of cord, at least one side core material in the form of cord on each side of the center core material, a plurality of wrapping or covering materials wrapped around one of the side core materials and the center core material, and another plurality of wrapping or covering materials wrapped around the other side core material and the center core material, the first and second pluralities of wrapping or covering materials being alternately wrapped at least one at a time around the center core material.

Thus, in making up the braid of the present invention the center core material and the side core materials arranged on both sides thereof are wrapped with each of the two different sets of wrapping materials so that it may have larger width.

Further, since each of aforesaid two diiferent sets of wrapping or covering materials are separately wrapped around each of the side core materials arranged on the opposite sides of the center core material, the two different sets of wrapping or covering materials may be colored in a manner such that they are quite distinct from each other, or different-colored wrapping or covering materials may be used to present some color distribution which is identical on either side, so that the distribution may be substantially bisymmetric, that is, it may have a look of a series of V-shaped figures. Since the wrapping or covering materials which are being wrapped respectively around the side core materials are wrapped one after the other around the center core material, the binding among the side core materials, the wrapping or covering materials and the center core material will be perfectly insured. Should one of the wrapping or covering materials be insecure, any entanglement would be prevented from occurring by the binding of the rest.

In a rug stitched up from the braid which has such various features as set forth above, the braid itself has been made so as to have a larger width and in which the coloring on either side may be determined at will and all the component materials are integrally interlocked with each other so that the whole rug will have an elegant external appearance. This contributes remarkably to the increase in commercial value of the rug.

These and other objects will be apparent from the following specification and attached drawings in which:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view showing the component parts of braid according to the invention, with part being unbound;

FIGURE 2 is a sectional view taken on the line II-II of FIGURE 1;

FIGURES 3 and 4 respectively are sectional views showing alternative forms of the invention and in which like reference characters refer to like parts; and,

FIGURE 5 is a schematic plan View illustrating a rug sewn up into a circinate form from the braid shown in FIGURES l and 2.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the braid of the invention as shown in FIGURES 1 and 2 comprises fine or thin center core material 1 having on both sides thereof heavy or thick

side core materials

2 and 3. Wrapped around one of the side core materials 2 and the center core material 1 are twelve fine wrapping or covering materials 4. Also wrapped around the other side core material 3 and the center core material l are another set of twelve fine wrapping or covering materials 5. 4 and 5 are Wrapped alternately two at a time around the center core material 1.

For the center core material 1, tough and flexible yarn, for example, of high tenacity synthetic origin, jute, other suitable fibers, metallic or even a mixture thereof may be employed.

For the

side core materials

2 and 3, long flexible cords, for example, of long or short fibers which usually have been used in the filler or filling cores, .tubular synthetic resin, sponge rubber or the Waste thereof, or a combination thereof may be used. The wrapping or covering materials are preferably yarns of wool, cotton or other fibers which may be easily colored or dyed and which feel soft. In some uses, tape or fine tubes of vinyl chloride may be used which is preferably internally colored.

The embodiment illustrated in FIGURE 3 is identical to that of the hereinabove-described texture as shown in FIGURES 1 and 2, except for the fact that center core material IA is of the same size, qualtity, etc. as those of the side core materials as shown in FIGURES 1 and 2.

According to the embodiment of FIGURE 3, the width is larger than that of 4the aforementioned braid as shown in FIGURES 1 and 2 so that the labor required for the sewing operation to produce a rug of the same area may be reduced.

FIGURE 4 illustrates braid that differs in texture still further from the hereinbefore-described embodiments.

This embodiment is identical to that of the aforementioned braid as shown in FIGURE 3, except for the fact that

side core materials

2B and 3B are of the same size, quality, etc. as those of the center core material as shown in FIGURES 1 and 2.

According to the embodiment of FIGURE 4, since the braid has thinner side portions than those in the above embodiments, the sewing operation along the sides thereof for producing a rug may be facilitated.

In the above embodiments, the described twelve wrapping or covering materials have been wrapped alternately two at a time around the center core material, but the number of these wrapping or covering materials which is to be Wrapped alternately is not limited to the hereinabove-described number, but can be determined at will; that is, assuming that the number of the wrapping or covering materials on either side is ten or twenty, they of course could be wrapped alternately one, two, five or ten at a time around the center core material, and, if desired, they may be wrapped alternately in different numbers, for example, in turn two, four, two, four and so on at a time.

While the invention has been described with reference to several of its principal embodiments, it will be apparent to a person skilled in the art that many changes and modifications are possible, for'further example, one of the side core 1 materials could be made thicker than the center core material While the other could be made finer than the latter. However, it is to be understood that it is intended to cover all such changes and modifications so long as they do not depart from the scope of the invention as dened in the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

1. Braid for rugs characterized by comprising at least one center core material in the form of a cord, at least one side core of cord-like material positioned on each side of said center core material, a plurality of Wrapping materials wrapped around one of said side core materials and said center core material, and another plurality of Wrapping materials wrapped aroundthe other of said side core materials and said center core material, said first and second pluralities of Wrapping materials being Wrapped alternately at least one at a time around said center core material.

1. BRAID FOR RUGS CHARACTERIZED BY COMPRISING AT LEAST ONE CENTER CORE MATERIAL IN THE FORM OF A CORD, AT LEAST ONE SIDE CORE OF CORD-LIKE MATERIAL POSITIONED ON EACH SIDE OF SAID CENTER CORE MATERIAL, A PLURALITY OF WRAPPING MATERIALS WRAPPED AROUND ONE OF SAID SIDE CORE MATERIALS AND SAID CENTER CORE MATERIAL, AND ANOTHER PLURALITY OF WRAPPING MATERIALS WRAPPED AROUND THE OTHER OF SAID SIDE
