Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIeE.
HERMANN PEELIGH, or BALTIMORE, 'iminrnmvn.4
FUMIGATQR.
SIDECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,330, dated .April 7, 1885.
A Application filed August 23, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN PERLICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have inven ed certain new and useful Improvements in Fumigators, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention. relates `to certain improvements in fumigators of that class shown in Letters Patent granted me February 27, 1883, and December 4, 1883, numbered, respectively, 273,144 and 289,553.
The object of this invention is to provide a detachable smoke-dome to surmount the top of fumigators, and a receptacle in which to burn sulphur when said receptacle is inclosed within the fire-pot of the fumigator.
In the accompanying drawings, .Figure 1 is a side view of the fumigator, showing the smoke-dome in position. Fig. 2 is a view, separately, of the smoke-dome. Fig. 3 is a top view of thesulphur-burning receptacle. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the receptacle and base or ash-pan. Fig. 5 shows the detachable bail of the fumigator employed to lift the sulphur-receptacle.
lThe letter A designates the base or ashpan, to which t-he fire-pot B is connected by the hooks c on the base engaging with the knobs d on the fire-pot. The top plate, c, of the re-pot is perforated with numerous small holes Vto afford escape for the fumes. The small holes eare shown in Fig. 1, where a portion of the wall is broken away, and said top is rigidly Xed to its position, and is not intended to be. removed. The bail I is made of wire or other suitable material, and each end terminates in an open hook., k, in order that it may be readily detached from the ears L, which are secured to the sides of thefire-pot. The smoke-dome F has a crown, g, perforated with numerous small holes, and side walls, h, with air-inlets i. It is provided with one, two, or more spring-clamps, j, which are adapted to press against the rim of the top plate, e, of the fire-pot. Thus constructed, the smoke-dome may be attached to or removed at pleasure from the fumigator. When in position, this dome serves to cool the hot fumes issuing from the fire-pot and to mingle air with y said fumes. The cool air enters the inlets z', and
within the dome mixes with the fumes which then issuefrom the perforated crown g.
The sulphur-burning receptacle N is a sha1- low-pan vessel with tight orimperforate walls and bottom, and having an outward horizontal top ange, 19,'withdraft-perforations g all around it. It is also provided with bail-ears r. This receptacle is to occupy the base or ash-pan A, the outward top flange, p, fitting snugly within the wall of the said ash-pan. An annular space, s, is thereby formed between the receptacle and said pan-wall. By this construction the receptacle is prevented from moving in the pan, and air to maintain the draft has free passage through the holes in the pan-wall and thence up through the The bail I perforations q in the top iiange. may be detached from the fire-pot and hooked to` the ears r of the sulphur-receptacle, and thereby the latter, while hot, may be lifted from the ash-pan and emptied or submerged in water to extinguishl the burningsulphur. By this arrangement one bail serves for the two purposes, and the removable receptacle for burning sulphur alone adapts the fumigator to a wider range of uses-namely, for fumigating hospitals, sick-rooms, or ships,
and as an aid in the extermination of certain i dangerous diseases.
For the ordinary fumigation of hot-houses and like places where plants are kept, thoroughly-soaked tobacco-stems may be employed, in which case a removable grate or bottom, as shown in my patent of December 4, 1883, should be employed. For hospitals,
shipsfand such places, sulphur alone should be used. The sulphur-burning receptacle N maybe used when 'a' grate or bottom is in the2 lower end of the fire-pot B; orit may be used without such grate. For certain purposes`` such as for rose-houses, where there is mildew on the plants--powdered sulphur maybe intermingled and packed with the tobaccostems.
Having described roy-invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- 1. A fumigator having a re-pot, B, provided with a perforated top plate, e, and surmounted by a smoke-dome, F, having a per- I ash-pan having holes in its side Wall, and an forated crown, and side Walls With air-inlets, imperforate receptacle, N, having an outward as set forth. top flange, P, provided With draft-perforar 5 2.
