Description

COMBINATION CHAIR COVER AND BAG STRUCTURE Filed Feb. 18, 1963 INVENTOR ROBLEY E. GERDETZ United States Patent Office Fatented Get. 6, 1964 This invention relates to a combination chair cover and bag structure and more particularly to a unique chair cover which serves as a seat and also as a carrying bag. It relates to a folding device which when in the open .position serves as a chair and when in the closed or folded position serves as a carrying bag.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a new and useful seating device which when being transported from one location to another provides a carrying bag for carrying small articles.
Another object of the invention is to provide a chair cover device which contains a plurality of article-carrying pockets for use in transporting small objects from one place to another along with the chair itself.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a chair covering device with convenient handles for use in moving the chair from one location to another.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a combination chair covering device and carrying bag structure in which the articles in the pockets need not be removed from the pockets when the chair is being occupied.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel combination chair and carrying bag which may be easily and quickly changed from a chair to a carrying bag.
In this specification and the accompanying drawing there has been shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention; it is to be understood that this is not intended to be exhaustive nor limiting of the invention, but on the contrary, is given for purposes of illustration in order that others skilled in the art may fully understand the invention and the principles thereof and l the manner of applying it in practical use so that they may modify and adapt it in various forms, each as may be best suited to the conditions of a particular use.
Further objects, advantages, uses and adaptations of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, having like parts similarly indicated, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the combination chair and carrying bag in the unfolded or seating positron;
FIGURE 2 is an elevational view of the combination in the folded or carrying position;
FIGURE 3 is a rear perspective view of the invention in the unfolded or seating position showing the rear pocket;
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view of the combination with parts broken away taken substantially on the line 44 of FIGURE 3.
Referring to FIGURE 1, the chair frame is shown as A and the entire cover and carrying bag is shown as B.
Specific details of frame A form no part of the invention as frames of different construction may be utilized with the novel chair cover and carrying bag structure described below. For purposes of illustration, however, chair frame A is shown as consisting of tubular leg supports 2 fastened to arm rests l and also fastened to frame members inside the chair cover and rod Ill which holds the chair covering in position. The cover may be applied to chairs of regular heighth and is not limited to the beach-type frame shown and described in this specification.
All of the portions of frame A are so constructed and arranged that the seat portion and the back rest portion are foldable toward each other for easy and convenient carrying of the entire device.
Chair cover B consists of a back portion 3 and a seat portion 4. Each of these elements 3 and 4 is envelopelike in construction and enclose the respective back and seat portions of frame A to form a strong supporting seat.
Although the combination chair cover and carrying bag structure is shown here as being made of canvas, any suitable material such as plastic could be used as lon as it possesses the strength necessary to support the weight of an occupant of the chair.
Attached to the top of the rear side of back cover 3 is a bag or pouch iii, best shown in FIGURE 3, for carrying articles such as swimsuits, towels, vacuum bottles, and the like. Pouch 19 is closeable at the top by means of a closing device. The closing device is shown here as a separable fastener 9, however, a buckle and strap, buttons, hooks and eyes, or any sort of clasp could be substituted therefor. Separable fastener 9 is concealed under cover member 12 when the separable fastener or closing device is in the closed or fastened position. Use of a closing device such as separable fastener 9 is optional as in some instances it may be desirable to use no closing device at all.
Bag or pouch it is also provided with a pleat 8 which provides extra room Within the pouch in a manner well known in the art.
Attached to the top of back cover 3 where the cover portion 12 joins member 3 is handle 5, the use of which is described below.
The seat portion of chair covering B is shown as 4 and is similar in general construction and appearance to back portion 3. Along the front edge of cover 4 is a flap-like portion '7 which is shown as a compartmented articleholding element. Smaller articles such as cigarettes, suntan lotion, sunglasses, etc., may be conveniently stored and carried in the plurality of compartments of front flap 7. If desired, the flap 7 could be made of one large compartment or could be sectionalized to meet the needs of the user. Here too, a closing device could be utilized if desired. Handle 6 is attached to seat cover 4 where flap 7 is joined to the member 4.
As shown in FIGURE 1, rod ll is used to hold the two portions 3 and 4 in their respective positions.
Operation of the device is as follows: When the chair is in the occupant-receiving position shown in FIGURE 1, the flap 7 provides an easily accessible storage place for small items. When it is desired to move the chair from one location to the other, flap 7 is folded back on seat portion 4; this exposes handle 6 which is grasped and moved toward handle 5 until the two handles are relatively close together. During this movement, due to the construction of the chair frame A, the chair is folded into a compact package such as that shown in FIGURES 2 and 4. Handles 5 and 6 may then be grasped by a single hand of the person carrying the chair. Articles being carried in flap 7 are prevented from falling out due to the fact that the openings of the sectionalized compartments are in an upright position as most clearly shown in FIGURE 4. Articles being transported in pouch it) are prevented from falling therefrom due to the zipper 9 being closed. However, if no closing device, such as zipper 9, is used on pouch It) the article would not fall from the pouch due to the upright position of the pouch when it is being transported.
When the chair has been carried to the new location, handles 5 and 6 are then separated and moved in opposite directions. When they are moved a distance far enough so that the back member 3 and seat member 4 are subin order to use the chair. At all times it is a carrying bag unlike chair and bag structures of the prior art which can be .used as a carrying bag only when the chair is not being occupied. Applicants combination of chair cover and carrying bag is at all times both a chair cover and a carrying bag.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A combination chair cover and carrying bag compris- (a) an envelope-like back portion for receiving the back of a chair frame,
, (b) a carrying handle on the top of said back portion,
(c) a pocket on the backside of said back portion,
' (d) said pocket being pleated in order to provide for expansion thereof,
, (e) a cover member for covering the opening of said pocket,
(f) an envelope-like seat portion for receiving the seat of a chair frame,
(g) a foldable flap along the front edge of said seat portion,
(h) said flap containing a plurality of compartments,
(i) a carrying handle located on the front edge of said seat portion, and
(j) said carrying handle being hidden beneath said foldable flap when the flap is in an article-holding position.
