3 Claims. (Cl. 269-43) My invention consists in a new and useful improvement in holders, and is more particularly designed for holding a shirt tightly on a form.

This is a divisional application of my co-pending application Serial Number 863,172, filed December 31, 1959, US. Patent Number 3,048,310, August 7, 1962.

My improved holder comprises a pair of rods for stifiening and aligning the front folds of the shirt, and a novel form of clip for holding the rods in proper position so that the shirt tightly engages the form during pressing.

While I have illustrated in the drawing and hereinafter fully describe a specific embodiment of my invention, it is to be distinctly understood that I do not consider my invention to be limited to said embodiment for its scope but refer to the claims appended hereto.

In the drawing:

FIG. 1 is a front elevation of a shirt to be pressed mounted on said form.

FIG. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1, in the direction of the arrows.

FIG. 3 is a fragmentary, enlarged side elevation, partly in section, of a stiffening rod for said shirt.

FIG. 4 is an enlarged vertical section on the line 44 of FIG. 2 in the direction of the arrows.

As shown in the drawing, I provide a pair of extensible rods 1 (FIG. 3), each of which has a hollow portion 1-a with an inner peripheral collar 1b at one end and a closure cap 1-c in the other end, and a solid portion l-d slidable through the collar 1b with a stop-collar l-e on its other inner end, and biased outwardly by a coil spring 14 confined between the cap 1-c and the end of the portion 1d. These rods 1 are used to hold the front folds 2-a of the shirt 2 in proper alignment on the form 3 when the shirt 2 is being pressed (FIG. 1).

The rods are made adjustable for various shirt lengths. Each rod 1 has its hollow part 1-a seated in the lower end of a fold 2-a of the shirt and the end of its portion l-d received in the upper end of the fold 2-a, as shown in broken lines in FIG. 1.

I provide clips 4 (FIG. 2) for holding the rods 1 in proper position. Each clip 4 has a bar 4-a with a semicircular socket 4-b on each end, and a transverse bar 4-c projecting forwardly its middle. A pair of rods 4-d are pivoted on hinges 5 to the bar 4-a on the sides of the bar 4-c, respectively to form jaws. As shown in FIG. 4, each hinge 5 has a leaf S-a integral with the bar 4-a, a pair of leaves 5-b integral with a rod 4-d, and a pintle 5-0 hinging the leaves 5a and 5-12. The rods 4-d have on their outer ends semi-circular sockets 4-2 coacting with the sockets 4-b, respectively, to form jaws. Each rod 4-d has an operating lever biased by an 3,151,860 Patented Oct. 6, 1964 expansion spring 4g confined between the lever 4) and the bar 4-c, to effect clamping engagement of the sockets 4-2.

I will now describe the use of the structure shown in the drawing.

The shirt 2 to be pressed is suitably dampened and placed upon the form 3. The rods 1 are inserted in the front folds 2a of the shirt 2 and held in proper alignment and parallel to each other by the clips 4. It will be noted (FIG. 2) that the clips 4 are so configured that when a clip 4 is to be applied to the inserted rods 1, one of the sockets 4e is swung away from its associated socket 4-b, by gripping its operating lever 4-1 and the bar 4c between two fingers so that the clip 4 can be made to engage one of the inserted rods 1, this process being repeated to engage the other inserted rod 1. When the clip 4 is to be removed, both sockets 4e can be simultaneously swung away from the sockets 4-b by gripping both levers 4 between two fingers.

Having described my invention, what I claim is:

1. In a holder for engaging a shirt having from folds tightly against a form, the combination of a pair of longitudinally adjustable rods for insertion in said front folds, respectively; and a plurality of spaced apart clip means adapted to so engage said folds about said rods as to hold said folds tightly against said form and main tain said rods parallel to each other.

2. A holder, according to claim 1, in which each of said clips has a pair of clamps, each of said clamps having a pair of jaws, and means is provided for opening the jaws of one clamp to engage said clip to the fold about one of said rods, and for opening the jaws of the other clamp to engage said clip to the fold about the other of said rods, said means being adapted to open simultaneously the jaws of both clamps to release said clip from both of said folds.

3. In a clip for engaging two relatively spaced cylindrical members, the combination of a bar having semi-circular sockets on its ends, respectively; a second bar mounted normal on said first bar midway between said sockets; a pair of arms pivoted on said first bar on the sides of said second bar, respectively; a pair of semi-circular sockets on the ends of said pivoted arms, respectively, adapted to form, with said sockets on said first bar, a pair of cylindrical clamps adapted to engage about the cylindrical members, respectively; a pair of operating levers mounted on said pivoted arms, respectively; and a pair of expansion springs confined between said second bar and said levers, respectively.

Claims

1. IN A HOLDER FOR ENGAGING A SHIRT HAVING FRONT FOLDS TIGHTLY AGAINST A FORM, THE COMBINATION OF A PAIR OF LONGITUDINALLY ADJUSTABLE RODS FOR INSERTION IN SAID FRONT FOLDS, RESPECTIVELY; AND A PLURALITY OF SPACED APART CLIP MEANS ADAPTED TO SO ENGAGE SAID FOLDS ABOUT SAID RODS AS TO HOLD SAID FOLDS TIGHTLY AGAINST SAID FORM AND MAINTAIN SAID RODS PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER.
