Certain railway car repair facilities require a riveted end panel which can be replaced upon removal of the rivets. This requirement is usually met by riveting the end panel while the car is on the production line and during the final assembly thereof. However, many production lines are equipped to finally assemble a railway car by the more economical method of welding.
Consequently, the primary object of the invention is to provide an end panel assembly and method for assembly thereof which includes a riveted end panel that is partly secured by welding during final assembly.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is an end elevational View of a railway car embodying the invention;
FIGURES 2 and 3 are enlarged sectional views taken along reference lines 2-2 and 3-3 of FlGURE l; and
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view similar to a portion of the view of FIGURE 2 of a modification of a detail.
Referring now to the drawing, there is shown in FIGURE 1 an end View of a rapid transit car ill including a pair of end panels l2 and 14 which are secured along their top edges in the usual fashion and along their side edges and bottom edges, by a plurality of rivets 16, in accordance with the invention. Since panels 12 and 14 are similar, only one need be described in detail.
With reference to the drawing, panel 12 is of sheet metal and is of a generally rectangular shape bounded by four mutually perpendicular straight edges. Adjacent to its bottom edge, panel 12 is riveted to an elongated plate 18 to form a single, lap joint therewith. Plate 18 extends beneath the bottom edge of panel 12 and has its bottom edge abutting the top of end sill 2-13. Plate 18 is welded in such position by a pair of fillet Welds, as shown in FIGURE 3, so that the plate projects upwardly from end sill 2t) and is supported thereby,
The inboard side of panel 12 overlaps the outboard edge of an elongated vertical anti-telescoping post 22 and is riveted thereto by rivets 16.
Adjacent to its outboard edge, panel 12 is formed to provide a vertically extending 2 section which, in conjunction with a backup plate 24 and a generally U-shaped channel 26, form fabricated corner post indicated generally by reference numeral 28. As shown in FIGURE 2, one of the flanges of channel 26 is spot welded to the inside of panel 12 and the other flange is spot welded along the inboard edge of plate 24. The outboard edge of plate 24 abuts the rear surface of the outboardlyextending, outboard edge of panel 12 and is secured thereto by rivets 1-5. Also secured by the same rivets 16 is an angle 36, one flange of which is secured by the rivets 16 and the other flange of which is spot Welded to the outer skin 32 which forms a portion of the side wall of the car. In the embodiment shown in FIGURE "ice 2, the riveted flange of angle 38 extends along the outside surface of panel 12 whereas in the embodiment shown in FIGURE 4, the riveted flange of angle 3%) extends along the inside surface of plate 24.
In accordance with the method of the invention, panel 12 is first formed into the desired shape. Then, panel 12 is sub-assembled by fabricating the corner post 23 and riveting bottom edge to plate 18 and its outboard ed e to angle 30 and plate 24.
Then, the sub-assembly is finally assembled by welding plate 15 to the end sill 2%) and angle 39 to skin 32. The inboard edge and overlapped outboard edge of post 22 are then drilled to receive rivets 16 and rivets 16 are riveted in place.
During the final assembly procedure, the top of end panel 12 is secured in the usual fashion.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that hanges can be made in details of construction and, in the arrangement of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a rapid transit car, the combination comprising: a vertical end panel having top, bottom, inboard and outboard edges, said outboard edge having a Z-shaped cross section providing an outboardly extending flange lying behind the rest of said end panel; an end sill underlying said bottom edge; an elongated plate riveted to said end panel along said bottom edge and welded to said end sill; a vertical anti-telescoping post riveted to said end panel along said inboard edge; a side wall panel having an edge extending along said flange and spaced outboardly therefrom; an angle having one flange welded to the edge of said side wall panel and another flange extending inboardly and overlapping said outboardly extending flange; a backup plate having an outboard edge overlapping said flanges and riveted thereto and an inboard edge spaced longitudinally from the adjacent portion of said end panel; and a vertical channel welded to said backup plate along its inboard edge and to the adjacent portion of said end panel.
2. In a rapid transit car, the combination comprising: a vertical end panel having a pair of side edges, a top edge and a bottom edge; an anti-telescoping post extending along one of said side edges and riveted thereto; a side wall panel having an edge that extends along the other side edge of said end panel; an end sill underlying said bottom edge; an elongated plate Welded to said end sill and riveted to said end panel along said bottom edge; an angle riveted to said end panel along said other edge and welded to the edge of said side Wall panel; a vertical backup plate having an outboard edge fastened by the rivets connecting said angle and said end panel; and a vertical channel Welded to said backup plate along an inboard edge thereof and to the inside of said end panel, and forming a corner post.

Claims (1)

1. IN A RAPID TRANSIT CAR, THE COMBINATION COMPRISING: A VERTICAL END PANEL HAVING TOP, BOTTOM, INBOARD AND OUTBOARD EDGES, SAID OUTBOARD EDGE HAVING A Z-SHAPED CROSS SECTION PROVIDING AN OUTBOARDLY EXTENDING FLANGE LYING BEHIND THE REST OF SAID END PANEL; AN END SILL UNDERLYING SAID BOTTOM EDGE; AN ELONGATED PLATE RIVETED TO SAID END PANEL ALONG SAID BOTTOM EDGE AND WELDED TO SAID END SILL; A VERTICAL ANTI-TELESCOPING POST RIVETED TO SAID END PANEL ALONG SAID INBOARD EDGE; A SIDE WALL PANEL HAVING AN EDGE EXTENDING ALONG SAID FLANGE AND SPACED OUTBOARDLY THEREFROM; AN ANGLE HAVING ONE FLANGE WELDED TO THE EDGE OF SAID SIDE WALL PANEL AND ANOTHER FLANGE EXTENDING INBOARDLY AND OVERLAPPING SAID OUTBOARDLY EXTENDING FLANGE; A BACKUP PLATE HAVING AN OUTBOARD EDGE OVERLAPPING SAID FLANGES AND RIVETED THERETO AND AN INBOARD EDGE SPACED LONGITUDINALLY FROM THE ADJACENT PORTION OF SAID END PANEL; AND A VERTICAL CHANNEL WELDED TO SAID BACKUP PLATE ALONG ITS INBOARD EDGE AND TO THE ADJACENT PORTION OF SAID END PANEL.
