Beardsley Ave., Elkhart, Ind. Filed Nov. 5, 1963, Ser. No. 321,542 3 Claims. (Cl. 1089) This invention relates to a drawing board assembly having novel and unique adjustable features. Particularly the invention relates to an adjustable drawing board having a single adjustable pedestal support which is ofi=center in relation to the drawing board surface. More particularly the invention relates to an adjustable drawingboard assembly which incorporates a sliding drawer arrangement which is maintained in horizontaljrelation to the floor surface regardless of the angle to which thedrawing board is adjusted.
Briefly stated the drawing board assembly of the instant invention comprises a drawing board surface which is pivotally mounted on a stand which may be telescopically adjusted to varying heights. The stand comprises a single pedestal which is integrally attached to a lower horizontal support member and at a point which is off-center so as not to interfere with-a draftsman' at'work at the'board. The drawing board surface is attached to support members which in turn are pivotally fastened to a single upper horizontal support member thus permitting the drawing board to be adjusted'to any desired work angle. The board is firmly locked at'the' desired angular adjustment by means of two braces-which-are also of telescopic arrangement and which are attached pivotally to the back end of the drawing board support member and to the horizontal support member. Any turning movement is prevented by means of a spline arrangement in the telescoping vertical support member.
Attached to the front end of the board support member is a rectangular drawer frame. This drawer frame, within which a drawer is slidably positioned, is maintained-in horizontal relation to the floor surface or the vertical support member by means of a lever arm and lever arm extension and will be more completely described as the specification proceeds.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide an adjustable drawing board assembly having a single off-center pedestal support.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable drawing board assembly which includes a drawer which remains level and convenient to the draftsman at any angular adjustment of the drawing board.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a light sturdy adjustable drawing board assembly which is quickly and easily adjusted to the desired height and which is rigidly maintained at the adjusted height and angle.
Further objects of the invention will be evident as the description proceeds.
The invention will be more clearly explained by referring to the accompanying drawing in which FIG. 1 represents a perspective view of the drawing board assembly of the invention adjusted to a working angle and showing the novel self-leveling drawer extended;
FIG. 2 represents a front view of the drawing board assembly of the invention with the drawing surface in a horizontal attitude;
FIG. 3 is a side elevation of the assembly of the invention showing in phantom various angular adjustments of the drawing board surface and the telescopic features of the braces and the vertical support standard;
FIG. 4 represents a cross-section of one end of the lower horizontal support member taken along the line 44 of FIG. 2; and
FIG. 5 is an enlarged cross-section taken along the line 5-5 of FIG. 2.
Turning now to the drawing, reference numeral 2 desig- 3,150,615 Patented Sept. 29., 1964 nates the vertical support standard or member. Preferably this vertical support member is of telescopic arrangement whereby the upper portion thereof, which is shown at 4, telescopes inside the lower portion and may be locked at anydesired height by means of locking screws 6. The upper or male portion 4 of the vertical support member contains splines or. keys which cooperates with corresponding notches in the lower portion or female member of the vertical support member to prevent rotational movement about thevertical support standard. This is shown in FIG. 5 with the splines designated by reference numeral 5 and the notches or channels by reference numeral 7. The vertical support. member 2 is integrally joined'to a lower support member 8 by welding or the like at a position off-center as is shown at 9. The lower portion of the vertical support member 2 may be of steel pipe, for example, a 2-inch pipe and the upper portion, for example, a 1% inch pipe. Lower horizontal support member 8 is preferably of 3-inch channel iron, although it-may be madeof other materials asevident to those familiar with the art.
Integrally joined at each' end ofv the lower horizontal support standard is a V-shaped foot member 10, which may be shaped from square steel tubing and welded in a continuous weld to the horizontal support member 8. If desired wooden blocks 12 may be inserted and held by screw 14 at the point of contact of the foot member with the floor.
The upper section 4 of the vertical support member 2* is integrally attached to an upper horizontal support member 16. This support member is also preferably tubular steel in construction and is of substantially the same length as the lower horizontal support member 8. Drawing board support members 18 are pivotally attached to each end of the upper horizontal support member preferably by means of pivoting studs or pins 20.
These drawing board support members, of which there are two, are preferably of angle iron construction as shown best in FIG. 2, and the drawing board 22 is fastened to the support members by screws, rivets, studs, or any other fastening means desired.
At the rear end of the drawing board support members, that is the right side of FIG. 1, there is pivotally attached adjustable bracing means 24, which are also pivotally pivotally attached to the rear side of V-shaped foot members 10. Preferably the bracing means are of telescoping arrangement with a rod 26 sliding within the tubular member 24 and being held in fixed relation by means of locking screw or stud 28. Rod member 26 may be bent and inserted in a hole in the board support member as shown at 30, the end threaded and fitted with a nut, drilled and fitted with a pin, or any other means of fastening the rod member in the support member may be used. The lower end of brace member 24 may be fastened to foot member 10 by means of a bolt and nut as shown at 32. Other pivotal fastening means may be used.
In spaced relation to the right board support member (when viewed from the front) and parallel thereto there is fastened to the drawing board 22 a drawer support member 34 which is of angle iron and is mounted in a manner opposed to the board support member as shown in FIG. 2. Pivotally fastened to the front end of the right board support member 18 and the front end of the drawer support member 34 by means of pivot pins 36 and 38, respectively, is drawer frame 40 containing slidably mounted therein drawer 42 equipped with face 44 and drawer pull 46. A lever arm extension 48, is integrally attached, by welding, bolting, rivetting, or the like, to the telescoping portion 4 of the vertical support member 2.
Pivotally attached to the end of lever arm extension 48 and to the side of drawer frame 40 is lever arm 50. This lever arm co-acts with the pivot pins 36 and 38 to maintain drawer frame 40, and consequently drawer 42, in a horizontal relation with the upper and lower horizontal support members regardless of the angle at which the drawing board is adjusted. This is clearly shown in FIG. 3 in phantom.
To review briefly the instant invention relates to a drawing board assembly having several unique features. One of these features is a drawer assembly which is maintained in a level position regardless of the adjustment of the drawing board surface. Another unique feature of the drawing board of the invention is a single pedestal support standard which is off-center and does not interfere with the draftsman at work at the board. The assembly of the invention is light yet sturdy and is quickly and easily adjustable to the desired height and working angle. The assembly of the invention comprises a vertical telescopic support standard which is keyed to prevent rotation, upper and lower horizontal support standard, and bracing means pivotally connecting the lower support standard and drawing board support member. The lower horizontal support standard is preferably equipped with inverted V-shaped foot members;
It will be readily understood with those familiar with the art that various modifications of the inventive concept are possible without departing from the spirit of the invention. It is intended that the appended claims should include these modifications.
What is claimed is:
1. An adjustable drawing board assembly comprising a single adjustable vertical support member, an upper and a lower horizontal support member integrally joined to said vertical support member, an inverted V-shaped foot member integrally attached to each end of said lower support member, a drawing board support member pivotally attached to each end of said upper horizontal support member, an adjustable bracing member pivotally attached to one end of each board support member and to one end of each inverted foot shaped member, a rectangular drawer frame pivotally attached to the end of one board support member, a lever arm extension integrally attached to said vertical support member, a lever arm pivotally attached to the end of said extension and to said drawer frame such that said frame remains in horizontal relation to said vertical support member, a drawer slidably positioned within said drawer frame and a drawing board mounted upon said board support members.
2. A drawing board assembly according to claim 1 wherein said vertical support member is attached to said lower horizontal support member at a point to one side of center.
3. A drawing board assembly according to claim 1 wherein said vertical support member and said bracing members comprise male and female telescoping members.

AN ADJUSTABLE DRAWING BOARD ASSEMBLY COMPRISING A SINGLE ADJUSTABLE VERTICAL SUPPORT MEMBER, AN UPPER AND A LOWER HORIZONTAL SUPPORT MEMBER INTEGRALLY JOINED TO SAID VERTICAL SUPPORT MEMBER, AN INVERTED V-SHAPED FOOT MEMBER INTEGRALLY ATTACHED TO EACH END OF SAID LOWER SUPPORT MEMBER, A DRAWING BOARD SUPPORT MEMBER PIVOTALLY ATTACHED TO EACH END OF SAID UPPER HORIZONTAL SUPPORT MEMBER, AN ADJUSTABLE BRACING MEMBER PIVOTALLY ATTACHED TO ONE END OF EACH BOARD SUPPORT MEMBER AND TO ONE END OF EACH INVERTED FOOT SHAPED MEMBER, A RECTANGULAR DRAWER FRAME PIVOTALLY ATTACHED TO THE END OF ONE BOARD SUPPORT MEMBER, A LEVER ARM EXTENSION INTEGRALLY ATTACHED TO SAID VERTICAL SUPPORT MEMBER, A LEVER ARM PIVOTALLY ATTACHED TO THE END OF SAID EXTENSION AND TO SAID DRAWER FRAME SUCH THAT SAID FRAME REMAINS IN HORIZONTAL RELATION TO SAID VERTICAL SUPPORT MEMBER, A DRAWER SLIDABLY POSITIONED WITHIN SAID DRAWER FRAME AND A DRAWING BOARD MOUNTED UPON SAID BOARD SUPPORT MEMBERS.
